Bay City Ball has an excellent pitch-by-pitch breakdown of Sanchez's no hitter. Kudos to Bay City Ball!!

impressive work Bay City!

Really interesting to see the fastball – slider breakdown, and how devastating his slider was!

Curious… in terms of starting pitchers in the system, where would Sanchez fall in a ranking of the starters with the best pure stuff (not really thinking about control)?

Sanchez
Cain
MadBum (needs to develop secondary stuff)

On pure stuff alone:

Lincecum reigns supreme.

But debating between Cain and Sanchez is tricky. Putting aside the control issues they share, there are still a lot of similarities. Both throw lively heat upwards of 98 MPH (the best pitch in both players’ arsenals too). Both feature a good curveball and slider (not equal, but definitely comparable). And Cain has a fairly well-developed change, whereas Sanchez doesn’t really have one (he’ll throw it, but he’s nowhere near as comfortable as Cain is with it). But Sanchez is the better strikeout pitcher (9.1 K/9 IP compared to 7.6). So I dunno… that’s a good question. If I had to pick, I’d say Sanchez has the better raw stuff.

how good is the giants' starting rotation? our rotation is so good, our 5th starters throw no-hitters. uh.

Cain’s change up is a lot more than “fairly well-developed”, it’s his best offspeed pitch.

Yeah, “not quite fully-developed” is really what I meant to say. It has become so much stronger since 2007, and it will keep getting better I think.
