BP: Dream Crushing (Tim Alderson)
KG has an article up on scouts and some negative opinions on prospects. Our very own Tim Alderson gets a mention.

I’m behind Big Tim until he proves us wrong. I’m sick of being pessimistic of enough big leaguers already.
I don’t care if this D-Back scout can’t spot pitching! (assumption done)
It's always Noonan somewhere.

is that a negative comment on Alderson?
if that’s all the negativity they can come up with then we have a pretty nice pitching prospect

"said one scout"
probably his own retarded observation

re
By most accounts, Tim is at 88-92 with his fastball and doesn’t get a lot of grounders. How many RHP are better that a 3rd or 4th starter with that combo? It make him a decent prospect, but hardly someone that you refuse to trade or bank on as part of your future.

if there was some sort of consensus among scouts that Alderson was a back of the rotation starter at best, then I’d be worried. otherwise, just one dude’s opinion. I think everyone sorta has him pegged as likely a #2 starter. Of course, in a strong rotation like the one we’ll probably have, he might be a back ender who’s pretty good.

Tom Tolbert said on KNBR that he has a friend who is a scout for the Rangers. The scout said Alderson, from what he’s seen, is a back end of the rotation (#4 type). Bumgarner, he said, is definitely a #1.
by SFGuy on Jul 1, 2009 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
There you go, a nameless dude that Kevin Goldstein allegedly talked to and a friend of Tom Tolbert’s. Sounds like a consensus to me.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Jul 1, 2009 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
exactly. it seems like the consensus is that alderson would be a good #2 or #3, but where actually he ends up depends on the other pitchers on the staff. if bumgarner reaches his potential and zito continues to be decent, alderson won’t be able to get past #4 starter anyway, as long as timmy and cain are with us. besides, it’s not like a back-of-the-rotation type is worthless. if that’s all alderson ends up becoming, the giants still made a good pick.
also, i like this quote about chris carter
But if the ball is not in his immediate bat path, he misses.
brilliant deduction there, sherlock. i wonder if that’s the same scout that doesn’t think alderson is a hot tamale.

I feel like I’ve generally seen Alderson described as a future #3 or #4.

Don’t everyone get so upset. If there weren’t questions about Alderson’s upside he would have been rated much higher coming into this year. This is nothing new.

It was only spring training but Alderson did get pushed around. Meanwhile Bumgarner was dealio
by wilriv21 on Jul 1, 2009 10:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the scout’s concerns sound reasonable. Alderson isn’t striking out a lot of batters.
But that’s not to say it’s set in stone that he’s a back-of-the-rotation starter. His changeup may improve, and he’s still got the projectable body that might mean added velocity down the road. I’m not concerned.

I am in this camp.
The first thought that came to my mind," " Is the scout comparing him to if he was to be called up tomorrow?"
Yes, This is still a 79 win squad.

“It’s not an insult at all, he’s a for-sure, big-league starting pitcher for me,” said one scout who saw him recently, “but it’s strictly back of the rotation for me,”

by deuce deuce on Jul 1, 2009 10:55 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Saying back of the rotation seems a bit much… back of the rotation is like an 80-90 ERA+ pitcher. I think Alderson could have a few 200 IP, 100 ERA+ years in him, which is more 3rd starter level and would be very valuable.

I’d rather package him in a trade for a player who will be even more valuable than a 3rd starter at BEST!
:P

He’ll definitely be in the back end of this rotation, slotting nicely behind Zito at #4 next year.

WTF?
“That plus breaking ball is his calling card, and he’s a guy with plus-plus control and average command, but he can’t pitch off his fringy fastball, and you don’t really see many changeups out of him.”
Like there’s anything in that statement that wasn’t common knowledge before he was drafted? He was never expected to throw hard; he was expected to be able to master a changeup as he matured. He’s 20 now and he doesn’t throw a changeup that makes major league hitters break their forearms trying to adjust? Well, he’s trash… Good to know there’s at least one scouting department that hires the handicapped…

True, I can definitely see where you’re coming from interpretting this guys comments as “he’s trash”. Especially the part where he says, “he’s a for-sure, big-league starting pitcher for me”. I dunno why some people have their panties in a bunch over this scouting report…
by Missing Barry on Jul 2, 2009 7:27 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think that scout is kind of writing off Alderson’s command… I have a hard time believing that he’s just been trying to get it into the strike zone all of this time when he was not walking all of those hitters. It’s not like he has the dominant stuff to just throw it somewhere in the area of the strike zone and be successful.

Not only that, but how do your have “plus-plus control” and “average command”? I may be mistaken, but aren’t control and command the same thing for a pitcher?
by Splash Down on Jul 2, 2009 8:34 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I may be wrong, but I always took control as meaning the ability to throw strikes vs. balls and command meaning the ability to “spot” your pitches in and around the strike zone.
by xanthan on Jul 2, 2009 8:40 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Makes sense, I always thought they were used interchangably

BP: Dream Nurturing!
With a .258/.329/.343 batting line at Single-A Augusta, it’s hard for Giants shortstop Ehire Adrianza to generate much attention in the box scores, but then again it’s his glove work that’s generating a lot of buzz among scouts. “You watch him take one ground ball, and you are sold,” said one evaluator, who added that on overall future defensive potential, the 19-year-old Venezuelan is, “the best shortstop I’ve seen this year.” He doesn’t offer much with the bat, but the scout believed it would be enough to make him and everyday player in the end. “He has a good swing, and they’re going to give him every chance to figure out how to hit, because he is a top-end defender, and it’s so comforting to have a guy like that behind the pitcher.”
I really don’t see any reason to believe that he’s not going to follow Omar Vizquel’s career path and end up in the Hall of Fame.
by Evan on Jul 2, 2009 11:40 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
It is because of reports like this that I have Adrianza as the top SS on my organizational depth chart.

he’s 6’1 and only 155 lbs, so you figure he can add some more beef to his fill out his frame. When he does, he’d add some more pop than he currently has.

Well...
It took Omar a long time to put up Omar numbers, his first three seasons could have made Neifi blush, and he wasn’t a consistantly solid hitter until about 8 years into his career. Even with his D, Vizquel might not be given the opportunity to work out his hitting if he were a rookie today. Well, unless he played for the Pirates or something.

If he’s really a plus plus defender at SS, he’ll just need to keep a wOBA around .295 to be an average SS. Just so we’re clear how low a bar that is, .295 is Renteria’s current wOBA.
