Did the Giants Bring Up Lincecum To Soon?
Because the Giants brought up Tim Lincecum in May of 07, Lincecum will be eligible for arbitration at the end of the season.

My "no" isn't as knee-jerk as most...
…but it’s not as big of a deal as Baggarly makes it sound. Super-two’s get an extra year of arbitration (I think), so it doesn’t change his free agency date. And Bagg’s “$10M floor” is unlikely. First-year arbitration players (and Super-two’s in particular) don’t break the bank. I don’t know where the numbers come from, but they ain’t market value. Last year’s big super-two names included Ethier ($3.1M this year), Russel Martin ($3.9M) and Hamels ($4.35 as part of a 3/20.5 contract). Tim will get more than these guys, but Hamels’ deal is probably a more realistic floor than $10M, given Hamels’ two excellent seasons and postseason heroics. If Tim doesn’t want to talk extension, put me down for 1-yr, $5.9M.
Ryan Howard got, what $12/13 mil in his first year or arb coming off the MVP season. I think that’s probably a better comp for Timmy, especially if he wins or is a top vote getter for the Cy again this year (which is certainly looking likely at the moment).
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
He won $10M in arbitration...
…beating Philly’s $7M offer, according to Cots. He was a Super-Two, and you’re right, Roger, this is a better comp. An MVP may be greater than a Cy to an arb board, and the Phils may have won with a bid of $8M or $9M, so I’ll stop short of calling $10M a “floor”. But, no, a healthy Timmy isn’t signing for $5.9M next year. Whoever said that is an idiot.
Yes
It would have been the smart thing to do, even though I really wanted to see him pitch.
Proud father of Juan Carlos Perez. Think Albert Pujols at second.
The team had to have made extra money by calling him up for that extra month—-I wonder how much?
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
Not $10+ million. Hell, 4 of his first 6 starts were on the road. Look at Griffey’s contract with the Mariners to see how much they thought he would increase attendance and how much it would be worth it to them:
1 year/$2M (2009)
* signed by Seattle as a free agent 2/18/09, with $3M in possible bonuses
* performance bonuses:
o $0.25M each for 450, 500 PAs
o with 2 million in paid attendance, $0.1M for 300 PAs, $0.2M each for 350, 400 PAs
o $0.2M each for 1) 2.1 million fans and 300 PAs, 2) 2.15 million fans and 350 PAs, 3) 2.2 million fans at 400 PAs, 4) 2.25 million fans and 450 PAs, 5) 2.3 million fans and 500 PAs
* roster bonuses (pro-rated to account for any days on disabled list):
o if Griffey is on Major League roster through July 31, $50,000 each for paid attendance of 2.35, 2.4, 2.45, 2.5, 2.55, 2.6 million
o if Griffey is on Major League roster through last day of regular season, $0.1M each for paid attendance of 2.65, 2.7, 2.75, 2.8, 2.95, 3 million

Marcello is right...
…Lincecum didn’t earn the Giants a dime at the gate in his first few months. As of June 12th, he had pitched four road games and three home games with attendance numbers right in line with the other games in the series. The Giants weren’t really a walk-up team in 2007; they still had Barry and a strong season ticket base.
He didn’t earn the team any money and he didn’t contribute to a pennant race, and through nine starts he had a 5.89 ERA. Still, his development path led to where he is now so I can’t really complain.
That rule seems kind of stupid.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that pie > cake, that Bochy is endowed by his creator with certain undeniable traits, that among these are veteran man-love, a gigantic skull, and the pursuit of the double switch.
Adopted Giant: Fred Lewis, who can still draw a walk.
