I rewound the dvr a couple times and watched that play a few times and I am unconvinced that Burriss would be any quicker with the throw to 2nd than Frandsen.
Fandsen fielded, pivoted, and threw all in one motion. He threw a beebee (sp?) right into the right side of Rent’s chest. That play pretty much can’t be done any better.

To be fair, if Rent had Tulo’s arm, then they maybe, just maybe would have gotten the 2nd out.

by cheno on Jun 9, 2009 9:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Read Rule 10.12(a). Error is "misplay (fumble, muff, or wild throw)"

That wasn’t misplay in any reasonable sense of the term. Just because someone touches a ball then doesn’t field it does not make it a misplay/error.

Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit... Maybe.

No, in Major League Baseball games. It is not infrequent that a middle infielder gets to a ball and touches it but can't field it, and it's a hit. It wasn't misplay.

(Incidentally, I am the Rule Nerd, if that wasn’t clear by my dropping the Rule citation early on.)
