now let’s get Tommy Mendonca (or failing that Matt Domiguez) in the third

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 9, 2009 6:36 PM PDT reply actions

Tommy Joseph C/RHP Horizon HS, Scottsdale, Ariz.
Hailing from the same Horizon High program that has produced Giants righthander Tim Alderson and Angels shortstop Brandon Wood, Joseph likely won’t be a first-rounder like those two. But he shouldn’t lag far behind. Having split time between catching and first base in the past, Joseph is behind the plate full time this year. At 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, the Arizona recruit is a big kid with tree trunks for thighs. He has worked on his defensive fundamentals to stay behind the plate as a pro and is above-average in both arm strength and accuracy. He’s been sitting lower and working on the mechanics for blocking. With comparisons to both Mike Napoli and Kelly Shoppach, Joseph’s calling card is his bat. In the 2009 Power Showcase, an offseason home run derby, Joseph showed off his well-above-average power by putting a few balls in the upper deck at Tropicana Field, and hit a 465-foot bomb that fluttered the American flag hanging from the catwalk in the left-center field power alley.

5/30 from DraysBays: His bat is ridiculous, he flashes power now and should only gain pop heading forward. His arm is good, but his quickness and agility are going to raise flags as to his future as catcher. Plus, it’s not like Joseph has much of a past behind the plate either, as this was his first year behind the plate. A high risk/reward type.
From BA 5/8: In a tight 6-5 victory in April over Desert Ridge High School and fellow draft prospect Jake Barrett, Joseph when 1-for-4 with a double and three RBIs as Horizon scored six times in the seventh to win. For the season, Joseph has hit .494 through 27 games with 15 homers and 34 RBIs…

CHRIS DOMINGUEZ, 3B LOUISVILLE
Dominguez’s combination of size (6-foot-4, 235 pounds), power and arm strength is as imposing as any player in this draft. He hits tape-measure shots in batting practice and games, and he has four home run crowns to his credit (New England Collegiate League in 2006, Big East Conference and Cape Cod League in 2008, Big East with a school-record 25 in 2009). “You always worry that he’s going to swing and miss, but he’s going to hit 25-30 homers if he makes contact,” an area scout says. While Dominguez continues to chase breaking balls, he has made strides as a hitter. His 55 strikeouts in 64 games this spring were a far cry from the 88 whiffs he had in 66 games as a redshirt freshman in 2006. He has quieted his approach and shortened his stroke without compromising his power. He doesn’t possess an abundance of speed, but he has improved his conditioning and has enough quickness and instincts to have stolen 19 bases in 25 attempts. Scouts still wonder how dominant Dominguez might be on the mound after he showed a mid-90s fastball as a freshman reliever, but he doesn’t want to pitch and hasn’t taken the mound in the least two years. His arm is an asset at third base, and he has the hands and reactions for the position. He made 23 errors this spring and his range is fringy, so he’s not a lock to stay at the hot corner. The Rockies thought they had an agreement with Dominguez when they selected him in the fifth round last year as a draft-eligible sophomore, but he ultimately declined to sign. He’ll likely go a round or two earlier this time around.

Bonds stands alone.

BaseballAmerica beat me to it

The Giants get some raw power at 86 overall with Louisville 3B Chris Dominguez, who spurned the Rockies last year as a fifth-round pick. Dominguez has improved every year, making better contact, striking out less and bringing his tremendous power to the fore. But scouts still have doubts about his long swing, his defense at third base and his agility. In fact, many scouts want him on the mound. Dick Tidrow is still with the Giants . . . hmmmm . . .

huge power, a lot of problems making contact. sounds a lot like our third round pick last year (I mean that as a good thing)

Right. Players chosen after the first round are always going to be works in progress—-we just seem to be picking guys with the problems that , to me, are least detrimental.

One note about this draft

Both Joseph and Dominguez are questionable to stay at their positions, and might need to move to first base. That will be something to have to keep an eye on. At least one is a high schooler and the other is a college player, so they won’t block each other.

we could probably stick somebody in a corner OF spot if it came to it...

i mean, this franchise has already proven that you can cope with one clunky OF on defense so long as his bat is good enough.

Joseph is interesing in that regard. He’s probably going to be below average to average but not horrible behind the plate (he’s gotten better throughout the year)….. and that at first… Dominguez is interesting as well. he can probably stick, but stick as average at 3b.

I thought I heard it somewhere

That Sabean hasn’t been scouting for the better part of this decade, and only resumed doing so in 2007.

Is that true?

by jctGamer on Jun 9, 2009 7:24 PM PDT reply actions

Sounds about right. I don’t know why it took him so long to start scouting again, especially when he had previous success at it. But then again before that we were actually a contending team and he needed to be around.

Since we have little information and no control over this, let’s just put this one next to Aaron Rowand in the “Stuff Magowan forced Sabean to do” file.

it would be another strange thing that helps explain the sabean enigma: how he went from making some good moves (and certainly being able to scout), to horrible, to back to being good in developmental sense.

Even in a draft class draft class universally regarded as weak, there are still really interesting players to be had in the second and third rounds.

Arguably more interesting. Something about a very flawed/very talented player is more compelling than a Strasberg or a Matt Wieters.

robert stock is an interesting pick. He might be a tough sign, and they drafted him as a C, though he struggled to hit (his arm is fantastic, and he pitched really well later in the year. As a P i like him, but as C, less so, but he is high risk, high reward there (and you can always make him a P if he doesn’t stick).
