MATTHEW PURKE, LHP, KLEIN HS, SPRING, TEXAS
Purke rivals Tyler Matzek as the best lefthanded pitching prospect in this draft. He already throws a 92-95 mph fastball and could throw harder as he adds strength to his 6-foot-3, 180-pound frame. He backs up his heater with a hard slider that ranks among the best in the prep draft class. He doesn’t have much experience throwing a changeup because he hasn’t needed one. Last summer, Purke needed just nine pitches to work a perfect inning at the Aflac All-American Game and started the gold-medal game for Team USA at the World Junior Championship in Canada (albeit taking a 7-0 loss against Korea). Matzek has moved ahead of Purke for most clubs because he works with less effort. Purke throws from a low three-quarters angle that adds life and deception, but he has slinging action in his delivery. It’s not violent, but it’s not smooth either. Purke’s stuff, track record and strong makeup combine to make him an upper-first-round talent, though teams still were trying to gauge his signability. If he follows through on his commitment to Texas Christian, he’d be eligible again as a sophomore in 2011.

lol @ you dissing on one of the best evaluators in baseball. Rizzo drafted all of the Dbacks best prospects over the past few years. Upton, Jarrod Parker, Brett Anderson, Carlos Quentin etc. I’d take his word of Storen over anyone here. Especially when they couldn’t gamble to take one of the top HS pitchers when their 10th pick would not be given back to them next year if the guy wouldn’t sign.

A week ago I saw a quote by Carroll that made me want to never listen to anything he says.

I’m not sure any statistical tool has ever had more of an effect on the game than PAP. If you look at the usage stats, we just don’t have high PAP starts any more because it measured it so well and pointed it out to the general public.

Not defense independent pitching, not understanding the value of the walk. PAP has made more effect on the game than any other stat.

How many people even know what PAP is? It’s pretty unknown even in the saber community. And it’s never been proven to actually be worth anything. And to think that it’s the reason why pitchers are now throwing fewer pitches…I don’t even know how vain you have to be in order to believe that.

Scheppers might because of his demands.

I’m all for taking a highly rated pitcher if they fall. But I’d also like to get a big upside OF’er. Like Jared Mitchell (doubt he will be there), Jacob Marsinek, Trayce Thompson or Reymond Fuentes. Also wouldn’t mind one of the top college 3b like Dominguez or Medonca. Luke Bailey at C would be good too. He was regarded as the top C prospect before he had to get tommy john surgery.
