Looks like the draft is going to be quite interesting.  Looks like it all begins with the #3 pick San Diego.  Interesting that McCoven favorite Tyler Matzek is not being considered by any of the teams preceding the Giants pick.

Anyone have any draft rumor scoop?

Matzek could go as high as #2. Ackley supposedly now has upped his signing demands and might fall. This was according to Mayo’s latest mock draft on MLB.com I believe. Keep hearing us being linked to either Tate or Matzek. Or Ackley if he falls. Since SD, Pittsburgh and Baltimore probably won’t be targeting guys over slot.

On the plus side, if Ackley’s demands have increased to the point where Seattle won’t take him, we might be in good shape. San Diego isn’t exactly a big spender and neither is Pittsburgh. And Baltimore is probably looking for more pitching, plus I’d say they’re pretty set in CF with Adam Jones. Ackley could fall into our laps maybe if he gets by Seattle.

Or, then again, I could just be talking myself into the dream scenario being a possibility, like I did a few years ago with Wieters.

weren’t the rumors that he wanted $10M, so tampa bay took tim beckham and no one else wanted to touch that price, so we snatched him. if that’s the case, and since we are obviously not broke, i hope this kid asks for $10M, he falls to #6, we give him $6.05M, everyone says the giants did another great job, we debate it everyday until he signs and hits .385 in the Arizona Fall League, the proclaim him the G.O.A.T.

More or less. The Rays were the only team in front of us who was seriously considering picking him – the Pirates like Alvarez, the Royals liked Hosmer, the Orioles liked Matusz – but they went with Beckham for a combination of money issues and the perception that Beckham had the highest ceiling in the draft.

Regarding Wheeler

Kyle Jensen from St. Mary’s was apparently quite a bit more impressive than Wheeler or Brett Jackson in their group workout at AT&T. Sounds like they’re off of Wheeler in the 1st and on Jensen for the 2nd round.

by BigDaddyK on Jun 9, 2009 6:10 AM PDT reply actions

If true then i’m glad. Not that i’m necessarily saying we should take Jensen in the 2nd round but it seems to be a more sensible approach to take a higher rated player earlier & get a college outfielder (if that’s what you’re interested) in a later round as there are a few reasonable options.

some info from BA

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/mock-draft/2009/268312.html

6. GIANTS. San Francisco needs hitting more than pitching and has spent a lot of time working on college outfielders Wheeler, A.J. Pollock (Notre Dame) and Brett Jackson (California). But a team picking this high almost always takes the best player available, and the Giants aren’t afraid of negotiating with tough signs, so that should lead them to Matzek. Zack Wheeler may be Plan B.
Projected Pick: TYLER MATZEK.

According to multiple team sources, several of the draft’s best high school players blew them away when they revealed their price tags. California lefthander Tyler Matzek, the best prep prospect in the draft, wants “precedent-setting money,” which is interpreted to mean that he wants to surpass the record $7 million guarantee for a high schooler given to Josh Beckett and Rick Porcello. Texas righthander Shelby Miller, previously believed to be signable for around MLB’s bonus recommendations, is asking for $4 million.

by superk1ng on Jun 9, 2009 9:20 AM PDT reply actions

I wonder why writers pay so much attention to the amount of money players are asking for. OF COURSE they’re going to ask for the moon. But if they want to become 18-year-old millionaires they’ll sign; if they want to go to college they’ll go to college.

The commish’s office has absolutely no enforcement power when it comes to slot-bonuses. Plus, the Giants have a contract that says they “own” San Jose. I’m not worried.

by cornball on Jun 9, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

lacking ‘enforcement power’ is only in the legal sense, not defacto at all. Unless Selig makes a foolish mistake, it would be nearly impossible to legally link a change of tune in the san jose issue to drawing the ire of selig, even if it is in fact the case.

And the Giants contractual position—while it has strength—is hardly indefeasible, and still depends on the favor of the commish’s office to some extent.

Where’s the enforcement power? The guy that was the comish’s pit bull goes to Pittsburgh and immediately goes over-slot to draft Alvarez. Until there’s something Selig can actually do (he’d have to go to court to take San Jose away from the Giants) within the CBA, teams will continue to go over-slot whenever they want.

They will go over slot.

Have you actually looked at the contract in question, and the potentially relevant case law?

They’d have to go to court unless the giants fought it at first, but settled later (depending on the strength of the actual case put against them).

If not, you might want to. It isn’t a given that the giants would win a case.

Yeah; it’d be a very interesting case it if ever went to court.

That said, much of this fear is moot (as you know). Matzek would only be a bout a million over slot, and that isn’t enough to draw much ire.

You know, we’ve got Microsoft’s lawyer running the team right now… something tells me that when it comes to contracts, he probably knows what he’s doing. To be honest

Their starters are not that bad. Strasburg should pitch the last three innings of every game and they’d be at least a .500 club.

Lannan: 5.18

You’re right, they’re not as bad as I thought. ZImmermann, Detwiler, and Stammen are have FIPs about 2 runs below their ERAs. Still, they could do with a few upgrades.

I love the draft!

This is who I believe the Giants should take in descending order should they be available, along with a short reason why:
1) Strasburg: Great Fastball. Would give us the best rotation in baseball for the next decade, arguably of all time. No more discussing it, we could trade Sanchez for Uggla(haha). Once in a decade kind of prospect (or at least until this time next year)
2)Dustin Ackley reminds me of Buster Posey with more power. Last year’s class was much better than this year’s, but Ackley is a refined college bat who will contribute to a team a season after he is drafted, much like Posey. If the Giants could get him, they could turn him into their CF prospect, or just a regular corner OF guy and he could play in the Bay for the next 15 years bringing home MVP’s.
3)Donovan Tate: I think that I am the biggest supporter of this guy on this site, but Tate has the speed, arm strength, and skills to be a solid lead off man for this club. The Dodgers show what leadoff men can do. Once our middle of the order bats come through can you imagine a lineup where Tate gets on, Panda singles him to third, Posey doubles him in. With runners on second and third Anvil steps up in the top of the first? with Lince, Cain, Madbum, or Tim2 pitching? wow…
4)Matzek: I would have said Grant Green, but I think that Crawford is going to be a surprise star in the Majors, so I see the Giants laying off of him. They still need a fifth pitcher(who projects as another teams’ ace) so Matzek fits the bill). He is also in HS so he will be ready in 2012 like the rest of our team, so his development wont have to be rushed.
5)Crow: Allows us to trade Sanchez for a bat and not lose anything on our pitching staff

I would still think he would be better for us in the long haul in the outfield because of Noonan coming up, but he could definitely play there for us now…

PGCrossChecker sez:

A few hours before the draft that seems to have all changed and it’s not because any one of the five has all of a sudden developed talent or health problems. The talk now all seems to be of teams running away because of signability concerns.

At places in the draft that were formally slotted for one or a couple of the "High School 5", I’m now hearing players such as Tennessee LHP Mike Minor, USC SS Grant Green, Lipscomb LHP Rex Brothers, Boston College C Tony Sanchez or Stanford RHP Drew Storen.

Those players represent sure things as far as scouting directors are concerned. Per my previous post on risk, I would not be at all surprised if some players and their advisors have oversold themselves in this climate.

Baseball America is reporting that Pittsburgh is firmly on Sanchez and I’m sure that Jim Callis has this from a good source. I had heard both Aaron Crow and Grant Green in that slot earlier today. If Pittsburgh does indeed pick Sanchez, they could, and should, be in for another public relations storm in a week where Hurricane McLouth Trade already hit the city. Sanchez is a fine player but I don’t think you will find him at #4 or anywhere close on most team’s draft boards.

McLouth has $4.5 million next year and $6.5 million in 2011, plus a $10.65 million with a $1.25 million buyout for 2012 and whatever he’s owed for the rest of this year. So that’s at least $13 million or so. Or did the Pirates eat some of his salary?

That’s the rumors on the interwebs at least. They better have a deal in place pre-draft though. Because if they go cheap and miss out on Sano, that’s real bad. That or take a lot of signability picks later as a hedge.

he’s smart, but he’s also pretty damn stubborn. i’ve watched a lot of stanford baseball these past few seasons, and i couldn’t figure out for the life of me why he wasn’t in the rotation.

i think storen is going to be a really good major leaguer… but i don’t think i’d be happy with him at the giants spot. i’d be intrigued by the possibility that he could be moved to starter, but i’d rater just have matzek or wheeler or crow.

Keeping him focused and refreshed are his twice-a-week five-mile runs around a canyon near his home, where he and his dog, Denali, a 110-pound female American bulldog, wander through the wilderness with music from Lil Wayne blaring from Matzek’s headphones

Curious about Pirate fans' reactions to Sanchez

Some aren’t happy (one predicted a bigger freakout than over the McLouth trade), some are convincing themselves it’ll be okay. This reaction made me laugh, though, because I saw us in it:

It amazes me how fast everyone has gone from "If we draft another pitcher in the first round I’ll never cheer for this team again" to we should take one of about a dozens young arms.
