Rumor: Sanchez for DeRosa
The San Francisco Giants are one of many teams in need of a bat if they are to remain competitive for the better part of the summer.
According to the Boston Globe, the Giants have had internal discussions about Cleveland Indians third baseman Mark DeRosa(notes), who may, or may not, be available depending upon which rumor is out there at the times.
The Globe reported the Giants would part with lefty Jonathan Sanchez
DeRosa is hitting.263/.329/.441 with 9HR, 37RBIs, and 36 Runs.
He has played most of the games at 3B, but also has played LF, RF, and 1B this season.
Last year for the Cubs, he hit.285/.376/.481 with 21 HR, and 87RBIs.
What do you guys think?

Hells No!!
Mark DeRosa is a good player, but a free agent after this season. If that is all you can get for Jonathan Sanchez, you might as well hold on to him. I wouldn’t even do Sanchez for Nick Johnson, because Nick is also a free agent, but Nick is a much more desirable player than DeRosa.

Yeah, DeRosa is good, but I don’t think this trade makes sense for us. I’d rather hold on to Sanchez and try to sign DeRosa in the off season.

A two year contract might be OK. Burriss isn’t looking like a major leaguer, Frandsen doesn’t seem to be considered a prospect, and Noonan is struggling in San Jose. If we want to compete next year, we’ll need a second baseman.

really?
Burriss isn’t looking like a major leaguer
I think he looks like a talented kid dragged from A ball and thrown into the majors who is batting .260 anyway (with OBP higher than Uribe or Molina).
He’s better described as a living experiment to see whether it’s worse to be coached in the Giants system or just skip it entirely.

That is not a compliment. Of 172 qualifying players, only 3 have an OBP lower than Molina’s. Also, only 3 have a SLG lower than Burriss’s. He was rushed to majors last year, but he’s already 24. Basically, he’s the kind of player who’s going to have to hit over .300 to be a decent hitter. That’s very hard to do. Right now he should stay at 2B, but if by the end of the year he’s hitting like this, we’ll have to sign a new 2B.

Sabean doesn't get it
He expects GM’s to hand over their best players because they’re arb eligible, or because they can’t afford them, and then he finds out the cold reality, which is that the player he thinks is a legit trade chip can only get an impending 34 year old FA who really won’t make a difference on this team. The time to make the upgrade was the offseason, when players like Mark Texiera are on the market. Now it’s not Sabean’s fault that the Giants’ aren’t willing to get into bidding wars for players like that, but those are the types of players that make a difference. The only other option to make it work is to draft the right players. Tuesday’s draft is what Sabean should be focused on right now. Trading for a player who will give you a couple of months and then come off the bench for the Yankees next season makes no sense. And the folly of it will be thrown in Sabean’s face for the next decade, when Jonathan Sanchez is winning games in some other organization.

Bogus
I’m not buying this rumor at all. Sabean has stated as firmly as possible that the Giants are not looking for anyone with an expiring contract. The fact that DeRosa is 34 and slated to make a decent chunk of change as a nice piece for a contender only adds further to the unlikeliness of this deal. The idea of shipping Sanchez for a long-in-the-tooth rent-a-bat or even a rent-a-bat with plans for an extension seems so ludicrous as to be beyond even Sabean. I won’t give this rumor another thought.
(Unless of course the plan is to flip DeRosa at the deadline, in which case this could be interesting — I imagine he’d fetch a lot more than Sanchez in that scenario, given his versatility. Still…I’d say odds are better that Sanchez hits one into the cove this year than gets traded for Mark DeRosa.)

Is DeRosa a potential type A or B?
If so, it makes sense. If not, perhaps Sanchez just has zero value on the market? Jason Stark did mention the other day that scouts have told him Sanchez will be a reliever in the future because he cannot stay consistent over 5 innings.
If you think about it, if that is Sanchez’s true value (reliever), he is basically worth one bat like DeRosa or Nick Johnson.

Despite
De Rosa’s age and impending free agency Sanchez isn’t nearly enough to get him. The Cards, Braves, Mets, Brewers and even the Yankees have been speculated as trade partners. Turns out the Reds could use him too. Sanchez looks like more of what the Indians already have in abundance… young, under-performing, back of the rotation starters. The time to trade Sanchez for anything of value has already passed.

Let's check out some facts
Jonathan sanchez is 26, and has a career ERA of 5.19 (making for a robust 85 ERA+). career WHIP: 1.53. That’s bad. K/BB is 1.88. 70 baserunners in 52 innings this year.
Honestly, if we can get two WEEKS of De Rosa for Sanchez I’d be thrilled. We have plenty of pitching, and I just don’t get why anyone sees Sanchez as a viable, reliable SP in the future. I’d trade him for a bag of balls.

Nobody’s saying he has as much potential or will ever be as good as Johnson. But there are similarities; and lots of them.
Sanchez’s fastball is very good. Maybe not best in the league good; but it’s up there. His slider has a lot of similarity to Johnson’s too. Of course, the fact that he is not 6’10" means that his slider isn’t in the same league, but the arm angle makes the pitch similar.
But the biggest similarity is the fact that they both were (are, in the case of Sanchez) high strikeout pitchers who had/have control problems to work through. Both showed/show flashes of brilliance around the terrible control.

In major league history, how many pitchers have started off comparable to Randy Johnson?
How many turned in to something approaching Randy Johnson?
This reminds me of when we had Bonds on the team and someone would pop up and say “Lets sign [random past slugger in his late thirties], because look how well Bonds has played since he turned 35!” These guys are considered super special for a reason.

Randy Johnson is hardly the only player to figure out control problems
He’s just the highest profile player I can think of (and there are other similarities as well that make him a good player to compare Sanchez to).
Look, here’s the important outlook on Sanchez. He’s a better than average 5th starter right now. This is true despite the fact that this year has been his worst in the majors. He has a ton of potential. If he can improve his control then he will be a very good pitcher. There is precedent for this happening. Whether or not it is likely is irrelevant considering Sanchez will not bring back anything worthwhile.
I’ve never said that he will become Randy Johnson. There are just a bunch of similarities there that make it worthwhile to give him some time. And not say things like he will “never” improve. There’s no way to know that.

There was that stretch last year. And it is very possible that his collapse at the end had a lot to do with fatigue because he hasn’t pitched very many innings each year (due to how he has been handled).
And this year, it’s possible that the WBC has something to do with his performance so far.

With Sanchez, I’d just keep him in the rotation for the rest of the year, then let him convert to the bullpen in the offseason, sign a veteran starter to a cheap deal and hope that one of the minor leaguers (whether Pucetas-level or MadBum/TimA-level) is ready by the beginning of the year (for a Pucetas type) or May/June (for the other type.)

Oh yeah, I mean, if he finishes the year in the 5.00 ERA range again, then you think about moving him back to the bullpen. But if he manages to improve and finishes with a better looking ERA (and cuts his walk rate), then you certainly can keep him in the rotation (and his value would probably be better.)

Sabean has said repeatedly that they are not interested in acquiring players in the last year of their contract. he has the ability, as we all know, but hasn’t put it together yet. He’s still fairly young and hasn’t pitched as many inning as we’d all think. Also, consider that the Giants handling of him, stunted his development. He basically lost a whole year being jerked around between the bullpen and the rotation, not just here, but in Fresno as well. In 2007, he threw only about 75 innings between SF and Fresno. He should have had a least 100 more. Then, last year, he had some arm trouble as a starter again. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
I also think his WBC routine slowed his readiness for this season.
Now, we have to live with this stunted development at the major league level. He can still right the ship, but he needs time to do it. Maybe that’s not here, but he’s got the stuff to be good if he can harness it. Hard throwing lefties more often take more time to do that. They don’t always find it (Perez) but they sometimes do (Unit, Koufax). If he could get somewhere in between those two extremes on that spectrum, he’d be pretty good…and valuable.
We’re not going anywhere this season. We might as well let him work through his mechanics, whether here or in Fresno if he gets worse.

I’ve wondered about this myself. I realize that I am biased because I hate the WBC and was violently opposed to him participating in it. I think such a huge disruption in a young pitcher’s routine has to be hurtful, but I really wonder how much effect it has had.

It’s kind of funny; all the Indians fans don’t want this deal, most of the Giants fans don’t want this deal. Kind of makes you wonder: who DOES want this deal?
I’d pass too; I like Sanchez, he’s got great potential, and DeRosa is a fantastic player but I’m pretty sick and tired of trading prospects (even the high-risk ones) for short-contract over 30 VETERAN GRIT.

DeRosa is a decent player but
PItching is more important. If Sanchez just does not work out as a starter, he could still be an awesome reliever.

Sanchez
Okay, I’m not saying that it’s time to completely give up on Sanchez but fans always over-value their own young players. Try this little thought experiment. Change Sanchez’s name to Billy Jones and put him on another team with Sanchez’s current stats. As a Giants fan would you have any interest in trading a productive player for Billy Jones? Can you assert that with a straight face? And as far as Sanchez becoming a dominant reliever? At least for now that’s a joke. I don’t care how hard he throws, if he can’t put the ball over the plate. Can you imagine him as a “dominant” reliever with his BB/SO ratio? I can’t.

I'd imagine
that Sanchez, as he stands right now, would be a reliever similar to Brian Wilson or Alex Hinshaw (but I think he’d be better than Hinshaw).
Anyway, yeah, Sanchez won’t be bringing much back. Which is why we should hold onto him and hope he starts realizing his potential. And, if not, he can be a fine 5th starter or reliever.

Sanchez in long relief now would be amazing. He typically goes 4 innings and then loses his release point and starts walking everybody. But if you have him in the bullpen, it lets you pull the starter earlier if he’s having a bad day because you know you’ve got a guy who can get at least three innings of shutout ball.
Of course, the problem with only being able to go 4 innings as a starter and then walking everybody is that your BB/SO ratio gets inflated (as the above guy said), and starters need to go more than four innings. If he can find his command, which is definitely possible, he could theoretically be a #2-#3 starter or even a #1 starter on a poor pitching staff (like the Nats, where he would probably be #3 right now).
Then of course he has the outing where he can’t find his release point from the beginning of the game and gets nailed. But that’s the consensus I’ve seen: if he can get his release point from the beginning of the game and keep it, he has control AND plus stuff, which makes him being an effective pitcher far more likely than a bunch of other guys who need control but would have to change their mechanics to get it.
by quincy0191 on Jun 8, 2009 8:03 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Almost every team has
a Sanchez type. A guy with great stuff but can’t quite pull it all together. The Indians have gone through several. Examples include Fernando Cabrera and Jason Davis, two guys who could light up the radar gun but who either couldn’t control the ball or turned into head cases (both in this example). Yeah, some of these guys do get it together but it’s a minority. Most of them eventually get passed around the league while various pitching coaches try to refine their mechanics (or their head gear) before fading into oblivion and a career selling insurance. Fans fall in love with the “stuff” and ignore the lack of results.
