McLouth trade brings clubhouse backlash
"In one corner of the Pirates' clubhouse at PNC Park, the small, circular metal table between the stalls of relievers Sean Burnett and Jesse Chavez had a candle lit atop it, adorned by the No. 13 of Nate McLouth and an accompanying photo of him in full uniform."

Some of us older Giants fans know exactly how they feel. When Horace Stoneham started to go broke and sold off a few players, I was pretty disgusted, especially when they sold Dave Kingman to the Mets. Now Kingman went on to having a pretty mediocre career, but at the time he was a young promising player who looked like he might break some all time power records. Us Giants’ fans like to complain, but it must really suck to be a fan of some small market team and see your young players develop into stars and then see them all leave. Imagine Tim Lincecum, Buster Posey and the like winding up in Yankee and Red Sox uniforms for their best years.

It’s not going to happen. We are the Giants, not the Pirates. For all of our faults, we do have the scrilla to lock up players when we do happen to develop them.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
Yeah,
I’m not doing that.
Rafael Rodriguez: #8 on our list, n/a on a stat sheet.

Sometime if you are of a mind
I’d be interested to see a fanpost on this subject in particular. Those 70s Giants developed a lot of talent for other teams…. Maddox, Mathews, Foster, etc. Those weren’t all salary dumps, right?
Dave Kingman: would be good for this squad, that’s for sure. I think of him when I see Dunn.
Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti. "I treat Timmy differently from most pitchers: I leave him alone."

None of those were salary dumps. Foster and Maddox were just bad trades. Foster was traded for SS Frank Duffy (and pitcher Vern Geishert) in 1971, because the Giants had lots of young outfielders and they were concerned that rookie Chris Speier wasn’t capable of being an everyday major league shortstop. They were wrong about Speier, and wrong about Foster being just another young player who wasn’t going to amount to much. Maddux was a trade for Willie Montanez, who they thought was a much better hitter. Montanez was a good hitter, but Maddux was a good hitter too, and an all time great defensive centerfielder. Matthews left as a free agent. Famously, Ted Turner told the Giants at an MLB meeting that he would top anything they would pay for Matthews and the Giants’ filed tampering charges. Turner was fined, but still allowed to sign Matthews at the end of the year.

Gotta be hard to go out there and play every day. They trade Bay, Nady, and McLouth in a one year span. Its pretty obvious that they aren’t serious about winning and the players know that
Working on their 17th consecutive losing season, right? Tough to win over the fans when you’re so bad.

The did aquire Matt Morris
And he is was a good clubhouse guy.
Proud father of Dallas Mcpherson, the Babe Ruth of AAA.
If the players are saying things like this to the media...
It’s obviously a tough pill to swallow. Our No. 3 hitter just got taken away, the guy who leads our team in home runs and RBIs, and we were 6 1/2 games out. We could still have been right there.
…then you have to wonder what they’re saying in private. It sounds like clubhouse morale took a big hit from this move.
