300!

Congratulations to Randy Johnson! Eight of those wins came against the Giants, so I won't start really celebrating until 308, but this was pretty freaking cool. (Kidding...)

I can't decide if it's really cool that he did it in front of 1,000 wet 'n' soggy fans, or if that's a little anticlimactic. No matter. It was pretty fun to watch. Congrats, Randy.

I made it home just in time to see the bottom of the ninth. Great stuff. We’re lucky to have such a great pitcher and lucky to have him reach a milestone in our colors.

I was there and between 1/8 to 1/4 of the crowd were Giants/RJ fans. Everyone else, to their credit, were just excited to have something cool to cheer for. I don’t usually understand Nats fans and their strange attachment to a non-team with no roots in the region, but tonight they seemed almost human.

You could have said the same thing in 1958 in San Francisco.

by SFGuy on Jun 4, 2009 8:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, except there wasn’t a perfectly respectable franchise to be a fan of an hour down the road in 1958 SF. My point being if you were actually a fan of baseball in DC before the Nats came, you would be a O’s fan. The people I see at the park here don’t really seem like actual baseball fans as much as dipshit hill staffers that think its cool to go to the ballpark and buy a Zimmerman jersey.

by thethrillisgone on Jun 4, 2009 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions

But there are a lot of people in DC who wouldn’t watch American League baseball.

Also there...

That group behind the dugout was awesome. There were maybe 5,000 people in all there when the game ended. It almost seemed like the HP Ump wanted to be a part of history after that Dunn AB in the 8th. I’ll take it.

Certainly not a night I’m going to forget.

by GiantsTribe on Jun 4, 2009 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe 2000 — and other than Johnson’s friends and family behind the Giants dugout most of us were huddled under the overhang of the bar above centerfield drinking and soaking up each other’s body heat for warmth — it was fun!

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

The response from Arizona sports talk radio has been unpleasant to say the least, but then again sports talk radio isn’t exactly a hotbed of intelligence. But with D-Bag fans, you’re just amazed they can operate a phone, let alone walk upright, without injuring themselves.

I was there for this game and it was awesome. Thanks to the rain and such, they let us sit wherever, so for my 10$, I was four rows back from third base for this game. I was front row for the Cain game. God bless the rain.

Good Night at the Ballpark

Hey all, long time listener, first time caller…

Have been lurking around here for about 5 years, but never really thought I had much to add to the conversation, and have learned a lot about baseball and about good writing from reading the posters and comments.

Anyway, just got back from Nationals Park, and despite the terrible weather and near empty ballpark, this will forever go down as a top “in person” memory for me. I was surprised at how emotional it was…and it wasn’t just me. The 500 or so fans behind the Giants dugout were living and dying with every pitch. In that small section of an otherwise empty ballpark, we were a community, if only for a couple hours.

The Nats and their fans also deserve a bunch of credit. Fans were able to sit wherever they wanted, and the Nats fans were incredibly gracious (the few that showed up).

All in all, a good night for baseball. This youth movement will have plenty of bumps in the road, so it was nice, for a night, to get a diversion from a 45-year-old in the twilight of his great career.

Go Giants!

gotta say striking out the final batter on a 98 MPH fastball in Randy Johnson’s 300th career win is just so appropriate.

that 3-2 pitch to Dunn was totally ball four tho.

by quincy0191 on Jun 4, 2009 10:31 PM PDT reply actions

Too close to take. The home plate umpire didn’t want to be the one to decide it so he called it a strike.

PitchFX has no way to know if the pitch was too low (or too high). It’s not batter-adjusted.

It’s not definitive, but neither is the picture posted elsewhere… it was a questionable call certainly.
That is the reason you are supposed to fight off close pitches with two strikes. Not that I think Dunn necessarily has the swing discipline/bat control to accomplish that task, but if you leave it in the umps hands you have surrendered control…

There were 3 balls on the count. A walk would have tied the game. There’s nothing wrong with taking a pitch you think is a ball in that situation.

From Baggs blog. I put this here in case anyone wants to be there live.

“The Giants will recognize Johnson at AT&T Park sometime during the series against the Texas Rangers June 19-21. Club officials want to hold off picking a day because they aren’t sure how the rotation will line up, and obviously, on the days he pitches, Johnson is focused on one thing.”

Was disappointed by the rainout. The Giants always play on the East Coast on my birthday, and they get rained out when they go. It sucks.
