I watched that replay today and it’s hilarious that not only did the bat leap out of his hand but he almost fell over when he hit it.

Now look at me. I'm wet nurse to a last-place, dead-to-the-neck-up ball club, and I'm choking to death!

What is with this team's inability to take a damn pitch?

Pablo exempted, no one seems to be willing to learn.

Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

by xanthan on Jun 30, 2009 6:03 PM PDT up reply actions

You know, I think Pablo is a great example of how age is crucial for hitters. I think the main reason he’s managed to change his approach and adjust while so many others (Lewis, Bowker 1.0, Linden, etc.) haven’t is that those guys were in their mid 20’s when they got the majors, and in many ways were already finished products. Pablo was only 21, so it was easier for him to learn.

Adoptive parent of Noah Lowry.

It basically comes down to this: a walk is worth .33 of a run. A hitter who would walk 700 times in 700 PA’s would be worth 230 runs. 2001 Bonds was worth 201 runs. 1921 Ruth was worth 214 runs. If you walk Pujols every PA, you turn into the best hitter in the history in the history of the game, by far. He’s nowhere near that level, even when he’s hot.

It is when it’s Pujols and the rest of the Cardinal lineup looks this bad…

I mean sure, if there’s no one on base, pitch to him, no need to start a rally. But if there’s a sensible way to avoid him, by all means do. And make sure all the pitchers know— the old unintentional intentional walk is ok— if he wants to go fishing, fine, but nothing fat over the heart of the plate to Albert.

If we're facing Pujols again

the game’s probably over.

Pujols definitely has that Bonds-like quality where you’re counting the number of ABs until he’s up again.
