Not really sure if he’s that much of an upgrade.

Wonder what those numbers work out to if he is playing left field instead of right? He only has six errors in the last 350+ games so its obviously a range issue. Would be less of a problem @ AT&T in left than right

He’s terrible no matter where he plays.

by xanthan on Jun 30, 2009 1:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

We had a guy with no hip out there for years, may as well add a guy with a broken leg to the collection!

Terrible, but could he turn a -20 runs in right into a -5 runs in left?

Is AT&T’s LF really that different from Comiskey’s RF? The bar in LF is set a bit lower, so I’m sure he could pick up a couple of runs, but nothing too significant.

And he is only -7 this year according to above. If thats goes down in LF and gives us RH power, I am all for giving up a bucket of seeds and some big league chew for him

He’s on pace for -15.

Worse than Manny last year, DOH!

On a side note, I wonder what those numbers will look like this year. Rowand will definitely be higher, Chris Young and Carlos Gomez are both definitely better than Andruw Jones, Nate is not as good as Ichiro (or kenny lofton I bet but who knows)

by m34josh on Jun 30, 2009 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's a 2006-2008 chart btw

Jermaine Dye is consistently at the bottom every year. He’s not an upgrade over Randy Winn.

by superk1ng on Jun 30, 2009 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There aren’t many that are an upgrade over Winn defensively, but just how awful would Dye be in LF in our park? With Nate in RF and Dye (or Holliday) in LF, our offense gets a boost. And Torres could come in late in games when we needed Dye out of there, assuming the Sox are willing to give him up for very little at some point

by m34josh on Jun 30, 2009 2:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

sure, but we wouldn’t be getting him for his defense.

Bonds stands alone.

But his defense is coming with him, whether we want it or not. Scoring more runs doesnt do us much good if we are giving em back.

I really don’t think there’s a single potentially available player that doesn’t have some flaw(s) to their game. If we want to upgrade the offense for a potential playoff push, we might have to compromise a little defense or baserunning or gamerness or grit or contract or something.

Jermaine Dye has rated as one of the worst defensive outfielders in baseball for the last 3 years. That’s not a “little” defense.

He must want them to go out and “buy” two more starting pitchers and a center fielder if they hope to beat Detroit or Minnesota. That looks like a third place team to me

by m34josh on Jun 30, 2009 1:42 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I would take Dye and stick him in left (if we could get him cheaply). he wouldn’t be here very long and he would provide a potent bat in our lineup. I know Fred Lewis gets to the ball, but Dye would be running dingerz.exe all season long and we need that too. If we could survive Bonds in left, we could survive Dye.

Bonds stands alone.

When The Giants Were Winning Barry Was An Above Average Defensive Outfielder.

Thru the Giants last winning season (2004 in case you have forgotten) their was nothing wrong with Bonds’ defense. In both 2006 and 2007 Barry’s defense was still not Dye bad and his offense was much better then what we can expect from Dye now.

I am with those that see Dye as an unnecessary lateral move that does not improve the Giants over either Winn, Schierholtz, or even Lewis.

by giantsrainman on Jun 30, 2009 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am pleased to say that I agree 100% with GRM!

Plus comparing Dye to Bonds is just unfair. Even if Bonds had been as much of a butcher in the field as Dye, his bat was leaps and bounds better—-we all know that.

We need a middle of the order hitter real bad if we are truly trying to make a playoff run this year. Winn and Lewis will never be one. Schierholtz hasn’t proven he is one yet. So if we can get one for cheap for the stretch run, I am all for it. Dye may get cheap if the white sox fall out of contention, so may Uggla and Holliday but I think they would require far more than Dye in return.

Or we could just keep plugging along and hope the other 10 or so teams within reach of the wild card continue to struggle and don’t make any moves to improve, but thats not gonna happen. I think the Mets, Cards, Cubs, and possibly Rockies are going to improve if they are still in it in a few weeks

by m34josh on Jun 30, 2009 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow. This really isn’t that hard to understand. Adding Dye would improve our hitting and worsen our defense. We would be better at scoring runs and just as worse at preventing opposing runs from scoring. How on earth is that an upgrade?

You don’t think having a real hitter playing LF would make up for the 7 runs (probably less because he is playing the easiest spot in the outfield now) he might cost us?

I like the idea of having a cleanup hitter with the same number of RBIs as Winn, Lewis, and Schierholtz combined. Or a guy on pace to score 100 runs. Or hit 35-40 bombs and give opposing pitchers something to worry about. It would be nice to get that kind of production from just left field instead of where we are at now where we have to combine left and right field to get those kind of numbers

Thats not really that hard to understand now is it?

No. That’s exactly what I’ve been saying all along. The numbers do not back that up.

Which numbers? This years UZR does according to the stats above. And he would be moving from RF to LF

I am willing to put more stock in a 3 year average than a bad-but-not-as-bad first half.

Just sayin. There are tons of horrible athletes out there playing LF for good teams because their offense more than makes up for their defense. Thats why they aren’t playing 3rd base or CF.

LF and 2B are the two easiest positions for the Giants to gain offense for the stretch run, and there are very few second basemen that would provide such an impact bat

Wrong. 1B comes before LF.

If we could survive Bonds in left, we could survive Dye.

We survived with the Bonds Statue in left partly because we had some real good left side infield defense. Now that is not so much the case.

Yes, This is still a 79 win squad.

Who does he replace? I have feeling Randy Winn is going to have .330 second half.
