From Buster Olney's June 30, 2009 MLB Blog...
The Mighty Tim
Tim Lincecum’s shutout of the Cardinals might rank as the best outing of his career, writes Henry Schulman — and I would defer to Henry on this, because he’s seen most of Lincecum’s starts in person. Watching from afar, what was so striking about Lincecum’s outing was how he pitched in the lower half of the strike zone mostly, and then every so often, when he elevated his fastball deeper in the ball-strike count, the St. Louis hitters responded with powerless swings and easy fly balls. He completely controlled this game. Right now, on June 30th, 2009, Lincecum is the King of the Mountain among starting pitchers in the majors.
Lincecum is really, really good, says Tony La Russa.
From Henry Gargiulo of ESPN Stats & Information, why Lincecum won:
A) He didn’t allow a hit when behind in the count (0-for-7). Opposing hitters were batting .460 with Lincecum behind coming into the game.
B) Seven of his eight strikeouts were swinging.
C) His fastball averaged 94 mph, 1.4 mph faster than his season average.
D) He didn’t throw more than 13 pitches in any inning.
Meanwhile, the day is coming when a Giants’ decision regarding Lincecum is going to cost them in a big way, writes Andrew Baggarly. (see above link)

Here's hoping
Even if they did make a $10 million mistake by calling him up a month earlier, his price is only going to go up the longer they wait.
Sadly, I can’t imagine how the team can afford to pay Zito, Lincecum and Cain top dollar. Damn that seven-year contract!

Hence
Bumgarner, Alderson, Barnes, Clark, Sosa, Pucetas, Wheeler and their development is extremely important to the organization. Can look into the future and see a trade of either Lincecum and/or Cain in a few years if SF cannot get their bulging budget under control. A trade that would bring back some quality young arms in return. Cost of doing business.

Easy it’s called adding payroll. If you want to win you have to do it.
Plus Winn and Molina need to be gone next year, that’s money we can save as we will have young, controllable and CHEAP players replacing each in guys like Schierholtz, Panda, Posey etc.
I don’t see any reason why we cannot keep our pitching staff together, we’re not the Marlins. We’re not even the Reds or the Cardinals. We’ve been an upper tier budget team for quite some time, and I see no reason why they can’t continue to do so. Especially with this organization’s fondness for deferring contract payments.

Clarify: if you want to continue to win you have to add payroll. Homegrown stars must be paid, simple as that.

Haren...
He’s got a 6-5 record, but a 2.25 ERA and 104 K’s…not sure if that’s enough to get the starter position, IMHO…

the kind of people who pick the ASG starter care about winz, so it won’t be Haren.

You forget who picks the starter
The manager and coach are Torre and LaRussa. That means (unless they’ve pitched within 2 days of the ASG) the starter will almost certainly be Billingsley (Torre’s guy) or Carpenter (LaRussa’s guy). Besides, I thought that the current rotation has Timmeh pitching the Sunday before the ASG – in which case he wouldn’t even be considered as a starter.

the manager is Charlie Manuel, he will be the one who makes the decision

If the current rotation goes as planned, Lincecum goes this Saturday and Thursday, July 9 meaning if there was no All Star break and no day off on Monday his start would be July 14th, which happens to be the All Star day.

I don't give a fuck about $10 million dollar mistakes ...
If you’re retarded enough to give Zito $126M, then an extra $10M to the best pitcher in baseball shouldn’t be an issue.
LinceCain and pray for rain .... or for someone to take Zito off our hands.

of course, owing all that money to Zito makes it more difficult to extend Timmy as well as Matt Cain.

Just think of it as a 80 million dollar deal for Zito, and 46M went to Jason Schmidt and it isn’t as difficult to stomach.

We almost always want our teams to sign players to shorter deals, even at higher rates, to avoid the disaster factor. But I’ve wondered for a while with Timmy where the breakeven point is, and whether there actually is a point where it’s smarter to sign him to an ultra-long contract at a somewhat reduced price. Midway through last year, I came to the conclusion that 18 years, $320 million would make sense. Charting Timmy’s future as best I could, I figured he was likely to earn $380-$420 million, assuming he doesn’t go Zito or become extremely injury prone. So we would get that discount (at significant more risk), and he would give up $100 million but in exchange for complete security. I don’t know how much the math has changed over the last 30 starts he’s made, but I still wonder whether there is a way for teams to find efficient long deals like this.
