I can't stop dreaming about V-Mart
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/06/30/SP3818FPG4.DTL
TRADE CHATTER: Giants scout Paul Turco was seen at Monday's White Sox-Indians game, possibly looking at Cleveland first baseman Victor Martinez, whom the Giants are thought to admire.
It's probably too good to be true and they were really scouting Konerko or Dye, but man I'd love to get V-Mart. He's got another year left on his deal for 2010, he can play C and 1B pretty adequately. He's also already been a 3.1 WAR player for Cleveland. I'm guessing the Giants could get him without having to give up Mad Bum or Posey. Hopefully we'd keep Big V too.
I'm guessing Alderson, another decent prospect and a bullpen arm or two could get it done.
He would look awful nice hitting 4th behind Pablo. Also we could platoon him with Bengie, which will help Bengie be more effective with time off. Sadly Ishikawa wouldn't play as much, but I'm sure they'd still find ways to get him AB's and make him a defensive replacement late in games.
Vs LHP you could have Bengie catch, with VMart at 1st.
Vs RHP you could have VMart catch and Ishi at 1st.
Or something like that. What do you guys think?

Martinez
For the right price, he’d make a lot of sense for a number of reasons. He provides flexibility this year as noted above with his ability to play 1B and C. He can spell Benjie or Ishi.
After the season is over, there’d be less risk in Benjie actually accepting arbitration with Martinez on the roster. “Benjie, you really will be a backup on this team.”
Next year, he’d provides a viable C option if Buster is not ready to play at the MLB level. If Buster is ready, he could again form a 1B/C trio with Buster and Ishi.

Be careful what you wish for. Mark Shapiro is no slouch in the “horse trading” department. Remember he got Lee, Sizemore and Phillips for Colon and got Carlos Santana for a couple of months of Casey Blake. The cost would be something like:

Joaquin or Sosa
Jackson Williams

Martinez would be a great pick up
But the deal would have to be centered on Tim Alderson, and I’m ok with that. Alderson profiles as a mid to bottom of the rotation type of starter. Nice pitcher to have around, but expendable.
Molina wont go anywhere, no one wants him or his salary, he is just fine until the end of the year. Martinez plays 1B and gives Molina a rest at catcher. Next year Martinez starts the year at catcher until Posey is ready and shifts to 1b when Posey is ready.

Just because he doesn’t quite project as good as bumgarner. Alerson should be a 2or 3 starter, but on the giants if they have Cain, LIncy, and Bumgarner he might be a 4. but on many team he should be a 2 or 3.

I think we should trade for Aaron Hill
Sure, it might cost us Alderson, but we would have 2B locked up for a long time if we could get him. He’s a +10 hitter this year, and a positive defender. I think he also recently signed a 4 year deal with Toronto, which may make it more difficult to get him, but I think for the right package of prospects, he could be had.

Shapiro vs. Sabean
I’d agree with MickS. Shapiro honestly scares me as a trade partner, since Cleveland’s minor league evaluators are very, very good, and Shapiro has ripped off plenty of GMs who undervalue their own prospects. While I’m not in the Sabean hating crowd, he’s done that more than a few times. Sabes is best is dealing with salary dumps and incremental ads, not trading chips for All Stars.
Keep in mind too that Eric Wedge’s job is very much on the line, so that may play a role as Shapiro really does sound like he’s not particularly interested in firing him and getting him some help this year in the bullpen, which has been simply awful.
VMart would be the best of all worlds for the Giants. I wouldn’t give up Alderson for him, but AnVil yes, since after watching him in San Jose a few times I really think his future is as a DH someplace. He’s just not that interested in playing defense, but Cleveland had a guy like that before who turned out pretty well before they caught him trying to grow boobs in LA.
Valdez+Romo+AnVil+one of the AAA/AA starters would probably be fair. Cleveland would pick up two guys who are potentially lights out at the end of the pen even now (and a lot better than what they currently have) – plus someone with a ton of upsisde, along with someone to go long in the pen or possibly start. I’m probably the last Merkin lover still out there, but the best minor league game I ever saw was him versus Brian Bannister (who made Ortemier look rather dumb, although that wasn’t hard), and I think other teams have him more highly rated than many fans do.
What’d I really hope is that Sanchez in the pen goes lights out for the next month so you can sub him for Romo, since I really don’t want to lose Romo, but I suspect that’s what it’d take at a bare minimum – and it might take both Sanchez and Romo, which would hurt.
I suspect Shapiro will ask for the moon and sun here, though, so I wouldn’t hold my breath.

What is with the craziness about offering AngVill in a trade – he is still 18 in high A ball and was holding his own very well until his recent slump – which is hopefully a learning experience and not some hole found in his swing. Our legitimate power source should not be traded – period. The times I have seen him he has performed very well on defense.
by APGiantsFan on Jun 30, 2009 12:17 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree. I think its ludicrous to trade an 18 year old with legit 80 on the power scale. He honestly should still be in Arizona right now.
by Hobbes2d on Jun 30, 2009 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Crap. Didnt finish that thought. Most 18 year olds would be in rookie ball, Big V is already in High A. He also has responded pretty well to his aggressive development. Just wait till he has a huge breakthrough and people will be drooling at wanting to get him up here in SF.
by Hobbes2d on Jun 30, 2009 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not at all worried about Villalona’s slump, and I agree on his power potential, and you’re giving up one heck of a player – which is what it would take to get VMart without throwing in Alderson or Bumgarner or Posey, all of whom I’m just not willing to give up because I can’t see the big league club doing what I want it to do in a couple years (have a legit shot at the Series) without all of them on the roster.
Thus, it’s not the hitting. It’s more that I’m not at all convinced on his ability to play 1B at the big league level. In person, I’ve seen him make a couple of very nice stretches to dig balls out of the dirt, but I’ve also seen him just completely miss stuff that he could have gotten with a little more effort. (I remember a column someplace that noted what I did on the effort and mentioned he was going to be the death of player development guys on a team.)
Some of that – maybe a lot – is him being all of 18, and people tend to forget his lack of a baseball background before he signed, so he’s come a long way. But the effort thing really bothers me in terms of his potential at 1B, and so it’s why my gut on him is that he’ll be one monster hitter at some point – but who ever gets him is going to be tearing their hair out over his defense. That’s why I suspect he’s most valuable as a DH, which means ultimately he’s going to be traded from this organization at some point along the line.
Thus, if you’re ever going to trade him, you’ve got to fill the position you’d planned on him taking, and maybe I’m in the minority but I’m actually more comfortable with Panda at 3B than at 1B unless he decides to take the field as a lefty (which is not impossible at all).
If you’re going to break the piggy bank you patch the immediate need and make sure you don’t create major holes in your future. Losing Alderson creates a big hole next year, and in years to come. Losing AnVil creates a big hole in 3-4 years, but the only way the deal works for the Giants in the long run is if you could sign VMart to a longer term contract – and then the hole would be a lot, lot smaller. The trade fills Cleveland’s needs near term, and satisfies his desire to rip the Giants off longer term.
But as I said, I think Shapiro is going to probably ask for a lot more. Not that what I haven’t proposed isn’t a huge bounty, but I don’t think it’s craziness.
by HaroldS on Jun 30, 2009 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
All good points Harold. I’m with you – AnVil would be the logical centerpiece of any trade we’d make with Cleveland, and we would certainly have to include at least 2 pitchers.

Is we willing to open our wallets WIDE?
If you want a top talent like V Martinez then you are saying you are willing to break the glass on the Top 4 organization prospects. At least one of Bumgarner, Posey, Villalona or Alderson would be included in the deal. Along with a couple of more top talents.
The Indians have no reason to give him away for anything less than a HUGE bounty
by wilriv21 on Jun 30, 2009 12:49 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Alderson, Valdez, Sosa, and maybe Lewis. Doesn’t seem like enough though….
by Hobbes2d on Jun 30, 2009 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The cost to obtain V Martinez almost makes an inquiry into A Gonzalez mandatory. The Padres are rebuilding and looking for inexpensive young talent which the Giants have. Gonzalez is younger, cheaper and a NL player. Would prefer we open the wallet for Gonzalez.
by wilriv21 on Jun 30, 2009 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That’s funny – I was just about to post that the only other potentially available player for whom I’d give up Villalona based on the above logic is Gonzalez, and I’d also prefer Gonzalez since he’s actually hit quite well at AT&T despite the little problem of him hitting left handed – 06-08 splits: .315/.384/.861 with 3 HR, versus .269/.345/.787 at Petco with 34. I’m just not sure I’d want to see Villalona clobbering a Zito curveball in a few years, and my suspicion is that the Pads with their payroll problems would want all prospects rather than a couple major leaguers.

Victor Martinez Would Indeed Be the Ideal Trade Target For The Giants
Under team control thru 2010 (and at a very reasonable price), can join Pablo as a corner infielder that can backup at catcher and thus eliminate the need for carrying someone to just backup at catcher, switch hits with power, average, plate decipline and thus is a true middle of the order hitter to pair with Sandoval.
To get this much talent it is going to take alot. At the trade deadline in 2007 the Atlanta Braves traded catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, shortstop Elvis Andrus, lefty starting pitcher Matt Harrison, and righty starting pitcher Neftali Feliz. If this is the price tag how do the Giants not have to include at least 2 of our big four prospects and two other quality prospects as well? If (big if) the Giants can hold on to both Posey and Bumgarner and just include Alderson and Villalona I would be willing to do this.
by giantsrainman on Jun 30, 2009 2:06 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Opps - Somehow Left Out That It Was Mark Teixeria The Braves Were Trading For.
Victor may not be considererd equal to Mark in value but I would guess that Martinez can’t be thought of as being too far behind Teixeria is value.
by giantsrainman on Jun 30, 2009 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Or more importantly, that Shapiro wouldn’t view him as any less valuable, hence that he’d demand way more than Martinez is worth in the long run – and to me, that’s giving up anything more than Villalona as the centerpiece.
And I’d agree that the chances of Gonzalez being traded are about nil, and even if they did trade him the other issue with taking all prospects is that the Giants desperately need to clear some space off the 40 man. Can’t keep 19 pitchers and 13 infielders on it and still protect who you need to do so when Rule 5 comes around, and of the pitching prospects only English, Hinshaw, Joaquin, Salder, and Sosa would clear up space.
by HaroldS on Jun 30, 2009 2:24 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not exactly understand how the Rule 5 thingy works and when you need to add prospects to 40-man roster however last season the Giants did not protect Ben Copeland but did protect Joe Martinez and both players were from the 2005 draft class.
So that would appear to mean prospects from the 2006 draft class would need to be protected this winter. Prospects drafted in 2006 (not currently on 40-man roster) that might warrant protecting:
LHP Clayton Tanner
LHP Ben Snyder

Lifted from Wikipedia: "Players are eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft who are not on their major league organization’s forty man roster and:
- were signed at age 19 or older and have been in the organization for three years; or
- were signed at age 18 or younger and have been in the organization for four years."
Not terribly complicated in terms of timing – basically, you have to make sure to have them added on in December before the meetings.
Basically they’re in a mess because Rule 5 is doing exactly what it’s designed to do, which is to force a team to make a decision on if a minor leaguer is a major leaguer within a few years. Until they figure out what to do with the Lewises, Bowkers, and Valdezes of the world, they have to resort to moves like the Pichardo one – convenient he had a shoulder strain, no?
Also, the other issue with the bottom-heavy weighting of the talent in the system is there are also AAA and AA rounds, so if someone’s got a good AA or A level player that hasn’t moved up, you can take them too as long as you promote them a level. I’d be surprised if someone like Thomas Neal, for instance, would not get pulled into someone’s system at the AA level if the Giants don’t promote him to Connecticut at some point this year.
Not that losing any of these guys would be a horrendous loss, but it’s more that you can’t promote your top talent until you can really keep them on the 40 man; once Posey or Bumgarner goes on it, they’re never going off of it, which is why they were never considered when Molina got hurt and when Sanchez got put in the bullpen. You’ve got one obvious candidate for DFA for whom you don’t particularly care if they clear waivers – Bocock – and then you’ll have to start making some tougher choices to bring up the youngsters.
That’s why I’d like to see them give up a few guys who are currently on the roster instead of lower level talent, since they need the space.

Does Thomas Neal need to be protected and added to the roster this winter? What other prospects need to be protected?

and since Tanner was 18yrs old when he signed he does not need to be protected this winter

Yeah, I actually want to put a spreadsheet together with that and options on various guys because it’s an interesting question and I’m curious to see the answer. Honestly, I don’t know how big the problem is (or if it’s that big past the AAA level), since I started thinking about this once I realized why there was no way Posey could get called up anytime soon without some major pain. Thus, haven’t looked extensively at the draft classes yet for Rule 5 purposes.
So, to answer your question, the math says Neal will need to be protected or be eligible to be snapped up. But he’s a great example of why it’s a bit more complex than that, since promotions play a factor.
It’s pretty unlikely that someone would take Neal on their MLB roster for a full year, and if he’s in AAA that’s the only place he can end up. If he’s in AA, though, he can end up on a AAA roster (same rules, entire year), and that’s more likely. But if he doesn’t make it out of A ball, I’d say he’s almost certainly a goner to someone’s AA system even if no one takes PCL numbers all that seriously – for $4000, kind of a no brainer to take him and leave him there or above the entire year, since if you don’t have an extra roster space on your AA roster I’d like to have your minor league system.
So if they want to keep him, he’s either going to be at least at AA and possibly even AAA. But then that has other implications…let’s take Lewis for example. If he’s flamed out of the bigs, is still on the roster, and gets sent down, can you play him every day at Fresno if you’d actually like to see if Neal’s numbers translate to someplace outside of the PCL? I for one think that Lewis isn’t a solution in the outfield, but I also don’t think he’s as bad as he’s been over the last couple months – management pounding on him to be a power hitter totally screwed up his head, since I saw him in Norwich trying to do the same thing and his development blew up. Hence, if he cleans things up at the least he may still have value to someone else as a piece in a trade.
So basically, that’s why the decision not to play the kids in 2007 and 2008 was so dumb, because if they had they’d probably have made decisions on a lot of the guys who are still auditioning. Now, they’re jamming up the 40 man, and with the talent being down low, this is what results.

You've been mislead by the confusing, stupid terminology that is used for minor league Rule 5
Most of this post sequence is wrong, which I don’t blame you for, because it seems intuitively logical. But it’s wrong. The minor league Rule 5 draft does not work the way that the major league Rule 5 draft does.
The minor league rule 5 draft does not involve AAA ball, AA ball, staying a year at a level, or what levels players have played at. The rules are as follows:
AAA Phase
1. Every team designates a reserved list of (?) 70 players (somewhere around that number, anyway) who have met the eligibility requirements for Rule 5 (that is, they’ve played 4 or 5 years in the minors based on their age at signing). Those players are not eligible to be taken.
2. Any other player can be purchased by another team, permanently, if they opt to spend the money.
3. There is no #3. Seriously. No rules about returning the player, no rules about what levels of play the 70 players have to have reached, nada.
AA Phase
1. Exactly like the AAA phase, except that the teams get to protect a larger reserved list (100?) of players, and the purchase price is cheaper.
What does this mean? Well, for starters, Thomas Neal won’t get drafted as a minor league Rule 5 player. No way he doesn’t make the 70-man cutoff. If he’s eligible and they want to protect him from the major league Rule 5 draft, which is the one you’re familiar with, the Giants will have to put him on the 40-man roster (and kick someone else off).
In light of what I feel to be the shallowness of the organization’s prospect chart and the fact that none of the top 5 actually need to be protected yet (Posey, Bumgarner and Alderson aren’t vulnerable until Dec. 2011, Villalona I believe is the same, and some of the other decent prospects were drafted on a similar timeframe), I don’t find this to be a serious problem. Right now there is more than enough chaff on the 40-man roster (’sup, Brian Bocock) to make room for any serious prospects who might need to be added.

Bah, ok, totally misunderstood the minor league phase then, and thanks for the correction. I’ll have to see if I can confirm the size of the lists for the AAA and AA rounds – and is it 4/5 years versus 3/4 years before they’re eligible for that phase as you imply?
I’d still respectfully disagree with your view on the 40 man, though. It’s the combination of how some of the talent that doesn’t need to be protected by their draft date (like Posey) will in fact be in the majors in 2010 and thus on the roster, plus the fact they can’t figure out if their AAAA players are actual MLBers or chaff – well, they’re a bit gummed up right now. I mean, who in the minors besides Bocock would you DFA and expect to get through waivers? (No comments on the majors.)
Thank god Sandoval’s rise was so meteoric, though. He wasn’t on the 40 man before being called up from AA, and while I hope they’d have protected him over the Joaquins of the world…can you imagine if he’d slowed down a bit, they left him off in favor of their precious arms, and someone had taken him since he was eligible this year? Better to be lucky than good sometimes, I think.

Guys I wouldn't be heartbroken to DFA:
English
Hinshaw
Miller
Sadowski
Sadler
Valdez
Whiteside
Bocock
Downs
Rohlinger
Velez
Lot of pretty generic relief arms on the roster, I have to say.
Those, plus the openings created by departing free agents, should more than cover ya. If the Giants really were to outright all of those guys, I doubt more than 3 or 4 get claimed by other teams anyway— it’s not like the risk of losing them is 100%.

I definitely agree with English, Hinshaw, Sadler, Bocock, and Velez. Whiteside I’d be okay with, but I don’t think there’s another backup catcher on the 40-man (besides Starting Third Baseman Pablo Sandoval). I’d say a 5-guy First Tier Of DFAing is probably enough.

This is a good start, although I realize that it does not link to any authoritative MLB publication on the rules of the Draft.
Incidentally, it also gives us the sizes of the reserve lists: 78 players for the AAA phase, 115 (!) players for the AA phase. 115 players is four entire teams (the equivalent of going down to A+ ball)— no wonder only one player actually got taken in the AA phase of last year’s draft…

Why? Unlike all these other shitheels people want to get who have huge flaws, Victor is way better then getting Dye, Dunn, Konerko, etc.
And he also has 1 year left next year at a reasonable price and would still be young enough at 31 to extend for a few more years of good production. Way better then having Bengie around.

I dunno. He’s been a great player, but he’s never been much of a catcher, and if he comes to San Francisco, with Molina, Sandoval, Posey, and Jacks Williams hanging around, you have to figure his catching days will be at an end. He’d be a first baseman. And as such he’s a lot less impressive - tenth, twelfth-, fifteenth-best first baseman in the majors, maybe.
I’d go for it if I could be convinced he was really good at first, I guess.

Yes they probably would but the problem is
the Giants have almost no good trade chips-Lewis, Winn & Sanchez have very almost no credibility and Brian Sabean isn’t going to part with Lincecum, Cain, Wilson or one of the big 4 so that makes it extremely difficult to be able to acquire VMart so if the Giants want to get him they’ll have to do a quantity over quality approach.

Why in the hell would we trade for a 30 year old catcher who was injured last year for most of the year? He’s a good hitter w/ decent power but c’mon. He’s definitely an upgrade over Molina but this isn’t the sort of player we want to be giving up talent for.

The Pros of the move are:
1. Being able to leave Panda at third for the next season.
2. Someone a bit better than Holm or Whiteside to catch for at least some of the game while Buster works is way up the chain instead of another rush & hope job.
3. A fairly patient bat (career 404 wOBA bat the sports a 168 ISO for his carrer and a 209 ISO this year) to put between Panda and whomever else is hitting #5.
4. A player that could very well still be a Type A free agent in after 2010 ( when the market should be more sorted out)
5. Friendly team contract ($7MM option for 2010 with a $.25MM buy out)
Say something like Tim2, either Sosa +one other B- arm or Sanchez & Molina ( mainly for his Type A status) with the Giants’ paying all MLB wages For Victor Martinez and say someone like Niuman Romero would interest me. I am unsure just how good (or poor) Romero’s glove is at SS but if he looks to be around a young Aurilia defensively this is good enough. It would give the Giants’ an young upper minors player to compete with Crawford in the next couple years and between the 2 the team could be alright is Renteria runs out of gas before the end of 2010. The Indians get 2 picks next June, a high grade arm in the upper minors already and Either and arm that can get enough outs to stick in the MLb ( though only 2 more years of team control) or a pair of guy under longer team control but not yet MLB proven.

OK, I know you’re being snarky, but a 1B/C with a bat would provide tremendous flexibility for the rest of this year and especially next season. To quote someone whose opinion I totally respect:
For the right price, he’d make a lot of sense for a number of reasons. He provides flexibility this year as noted above with his ability to play 1B and C. He can spell Benjie or Ishi.
After the season is over, there’d be less risk in Benjie actually accepting arbitration with Martinez on the roster. "Benjie, you really will be a backup on this team."
Next year, he’d provides a viable C option if Buster is not ready to play at the MLB level. If Buster is ready, he could again form a 1B/C trio with Buster and Ishi.
