Couldn't the Giants have made a trade like this?

The Pirates are getting ripped for this at mlbtraderumors.com, but honestly I think it was a pretty good deal for them. Mclouth isn’t a CF, and he doesn’t really have the bat for a corner OF

“he doesn’t really have the bat for a corner OF”

His bat in the Giants lineup is a bit more important than how he compares to other corner outfielders.

.810-8.60 OPS is pretty respectable for a corner OF.

MLB average for corner OF has been in the .790-795 range tha last couple seasons.

And they released Glavine. Hmmm, any old, fan-favorite, veterans we’d like to get rid of?

Insanity is just a state of mind.

Pretty lame how they treated Glavine. I guess he didn’t do enough for the franchise.

how long do you think they should have kept him on the roster for old times sake?

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 3, 2009 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He wasn’t even in the rotation. He was making a rehab start.

I’m okay with this seeing as how I’m pretty anti-09 Aurilia.

Yeh...

Plus they have Tommy Hanson waiting to be called up.

His stats this year are ridiculous. 90 Ks in 66+ Inn.

Can we really compare Glavine to Aurilia? One is going to the Hall of Fame and was an important part of the Braves Machine that kept winning the NL East year after year after year, and even made a great commercial with Maddux. Aurilia was around or above average for the Giants for like four years.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

The body of work is of course incomparable but they were both brought back for exactly the same reason. By accolades, I guess Favre and Greenbay would be a better comp., I’m with the GM on that issue as well. I’m not saying it’s completely fair, but when there’s seven figure salaries involved and future talent have progressed way faster than expected, I think it’s the responsible thing to do.

by SeeingStars on Jun 4, 2009 10:43 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, I’m definitely with you on that. I certainly understand cutting him if Glavine isn’t panning out. I’m just being nitpicky about comparing Glavine to Aurilia. And yes, it’s pretty much time to cut Aurilia too. God bless him, it’s time to hang ’em up, Richie.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

They should just hand him millions of dollars for old time's sake?

Granted, they shouldn’t have re-signed him to begin with, but you can put a price tag on nostalgia, and that price tag reads alot less than seven digits.

Again, he had a scoreless outing in his rehab start. They wouldn’t have had to pay that for just one start, if I remember right. Could have given him one shot in the majors.

And what if he’s worth the one million?

by cheno on Jun 4, 2009 3:09 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

1) The Braves didn’t think he was. Beating up on A-ballers does not prove anything.

2) His actual worth is irrelevant if they don’t think they can afford the 1M.

3) He’d have gotten another 1.25M bonus for 30 days on the roster and again at 60. By the time he could have “earned” his million dollar bonus, the Braves would probably have owed him another 2.5M.

Wanna bet if Glavine was at 299, the Giants would swoop in and signed him by now?

Not a bad trade either way

If I were a Pirates fan, I would want a little more than that haul, but it’s not bad. I know they weren’t going to get Hanson or Heyward, but Freeman or Schafer instead of Hernandez would probably not be out of line. Still, nice deal, selling high on McLouth, making room for McCutchen.

I checked out Talking Chops reaction, I was kind of surprised. they said McLouth is lead off hitter, is that true is any good as a leadoff hitter?

Also if the giants made a trade like this, I would probably be upset

Got the #4 and #8 prospects from a pretty good farm system and another usable arm. Pretty good haul, I’d say.

The equivalent from the Giants system IMO would be Nick Noonan or Connor Gillaspie, Henry Sosa and Billy Sadler. That’s not a bad package at all.

Still the loving, adoptive father of Hector Sanchez. And who doesn't love switch-hitting catchers with power and patience?

by tedfordfan on Jun 4, 2009 7:34 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Depends.

I’d be shocked if we got the equivalent of 4 years of McLouth-type production from any of those four players, though, so I’d do it in a minute. As a group, they might match him in total value, but I think getting (I’m making these numbers up) 4 wins worth of production from 1 player is worth more than getting 1 win apiece from 4 players, simply because you’d get the the added value of the three open roster spots in the former case.

If McLouth were really a gold glover, this wouldn’t look so hot. As a corner OF, though, the Pirates did well.

My only complaint is that the Pirates might have fleeced a team that still saw McLouth as a CF.

And he might be a .5 win upgrade on Fred Lewis. So shut up, rabid D-Bruce fans.

by Grant on Jun 4, 2009 8:54 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I listened to parts of D-Bruce on my drive home last night during the rain delay. Fun fact, he actually made me angrier than all the crappy drivers in 880! And that takes some doing, let me tell you!

+1million. What a douche.

Your biggest mistake was putting Bruce on your radio. You should have put on music.

by SFGuy on Jun 4, 2009 10:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What about the upgrade on [insert name of Winn replacement] over the next three seasons?

I don’t listen to D-bruce, so I don’t really care about his dislike of Lewis or delusions of 2009 postseason grandeur.

I am not an idiot

Sabes as paraphrased on the Baseball Today podcast,

“Well, I could go get a hitter. If you watch our team everyday, you know that we need three or four hitters. Why give up a lot of prospects for one hitter whose going make you marginally better for a few months?”

Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.

by oldjacket on Jun 4, 2009 11:11 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

And it’s true.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 4, 2009 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's also true that McLouth could make us "marginally" better for 4 years, not 4 months.

Just saying, it really pisses me off that Sabean got scooped on exactly the type of trade the Giants should be perusing: a quality major league hitter entering his prime signed at a reasonable price for several seasons in exchange for a grab-bag of B-level prospects

VAE PVTO DEVS FIO

by Bhaakon on Jun 4, 2009 5:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like McLouth for that reason. He’s a good player across the board, but it’s his price that makes him a great option. I think the Braves made out very well with this trade as their OF was a tremendous weakness to their offense.

Incidentally, my one major reservation kinda is what Sabean is getting at. We need three hitters… at the infield positions. If we were to make any sort of deal I would want those B-level prospects to go into an IFer rather than marginally making our OF better.

by SeeingStars on Jun 4, 2009 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not so sure.

Our SS/2B prospects aren’t surefire major league stars, but they’re alot better than our outfield prospects, IMO. You’d have a hard time convincing me that Schierholtz’s upside is McLouth; he’s got as shot at being as a good a hitter, perhaps, but nowhere near the fielder and baserunner. Then you’d have to get past the whole “McLouth is already good, Nate might be good eventually” aspect.

by Bhaakon on Jun 4, 2009 6:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

nowhere near the fielder? Hmm, I’m not so sure his glove is even average statswise, Gold Glove withstanding.

I agree with you that McLouth is the sure thing vs. Nate’s prospect status but I think a lot of people here aren’t just supportive of Nate for the sake of it, he puts up the numbers to warrant playing time. Minor league numbers are way slanted to Nate’s advantage and McLouth really didn’t break out until 08. I’m not saying McLouth’s a bad player by any means, but what I am saying is that he makes way more sense for a team like ATL than for SFO. If we were to hypothetically bring him over this year he’d either replace Winn in RF (who’s been a better player by WAR in past years), Rowand in CF (who’s making too much to bench), or Lewis in LF (who’s about on pace with his 08’ WAR of 2.3).

by SeeingStars on Jun 4, 2009 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

McLouth is a sub-par center fielder, his career UZR/150 games is -10.6 runs (though it’s only -1 run so far this season). However, Schierholtz is a right fielder. McLouth doesn’t have enough innings isnright, and Schierholtz doesn’t have enough innings anywhere, for direct comparisons, but it’s usually safe to assume that a below average CF is better than a below average RF.
