OT: P90-X
A ski injury messed up my back and I had to take it easy for a couple months, leaving me in the worst shape I've been in quite some time. Mrs. and I just purchased Wilson and Zito's favorite work-out program and are getting ready to get going on it.
At an hour or more per day, it's a fairly substantial commitment, but is done from home. There are different levels that can make it pretyt hardcore by my standards.
Anyone else using it?
If so, any feedback, tips or suggestions?
Did you do the supplements?

I’m interested to hear how it turns out. Do you have a newsletter?
Seriously though, as someone with a messed up back (who is in dire need of conditioning), I’ve been thinking it might be risky for me to try this program as it seems like high intensity/impact. Maybe that’s why it looks like it may be fun.
Also, I haven’t done any research on the validity of the muscle confusion theory that seems to be central to the program…

My back injury was a severe contusion and not a strain or disc thing, so I’m not worried about my back, but if yours is a risk of re-injury, you should probably ask your doctor.

No worries, I’m more just curious about the theory behind it and how well it works. I haven’t done any serious conditioning in a while… stuff like yoga, swimming etc. are cool but the general rule is anything fun is bad for me. Stupid discs…

Go for it
I have multiple friends who have done it and they all swear by it. I have a separate program that I do, so I’ve yet to take the plunge.
I did borrow my friend’s copy of Ab Ripper X, which is the abs portion of the program. The first time I did it, my hip flexors were so sore the next day, I couldn’t stand up straight. Considering I’ve worked out hard for years, that was a shock.
If you stick with it, my guess is you’ll have amazing results. If you type P90X into Youtube, you can see some of the transformations people have made (full disclaimer that some of these are probably planted by the P90X PR folks).
Supplement-wise, I’d just stick to whey protein and a multivitamin. There is probably marginal value to other things they recommend, but probably not enough to justify the cost.

A co-worker has done it
And he says it put him in the best shape of his life. He also works out constantly so that is a fairly signigifcant statement.
I’d be willing to give it a shot, but I’m too poor to buy it :)

If you are not opposed to stealing it, you can find it on torrents and then just burn it. Not saying its right, but I am recently unemployed so I said F@&# it

I’m about halfway through right now. Very impressed so far
Some thoughts:
1. Its extremely intense. Don’t give up after a week or two because you’re still sore a day or two after each workout. It gets better, then you switch cycles and you will be sore again. Thats a good thing.
2. Diet is important. I unfortunately epically fail at sticking with the diet on weekends so its slowing my progress. I couldn’t find ‘lots of beer’ anywhere on the menu ;-)
3. The yoga disk is WAY too long and I am not flexible at all so I usually skip it.
4. Kenpo disk is boring after a time or two. I substitute the Cardio one because it seems to be a more tiring workout
I didn’t buy the supplements from them. Take the performance multi-vitamin from safeway (its generic centrum performance,) and a whey protein shake right after the workout (Optimum Nutrition rules,) and if I am hungry before bed I have a Casein protein shake

I second the Optimum Nutrition Whey recommendation. It’s inexpensive and the taste/texture is more thna bearable.

You hit it on the nose..
Although I stopped doing it after 6 weeks. I stopped doing Yoga after 2 and Kenpo after 3 and realized since I do plyo’s on the side anyways, I was only doing their workouts 3 of the 7 days so I decided to just do my own so that I could work out 5 or 6 days a week. I still do Ab Ripper X, that’s bad ass.
PS Dude in the video’s is HILARIOUS, I looked forward to listening to him make a fool of himself.

I found the Ab Ripper X online, found it on google video…
It is hard. However, if you stick with it, it seems like a wonderful exercise. I haven’t had my abs burn like this in a while.

Tonight we did the fitness test you have to do before you start. I guess it serves to purposes:
1. Ensure you’re fit enough to proceed with the program.
2. Give you a “before” starting point so you can see where you are after 90 days. (Besides the pics you’re supposed to take every 30 days.)
The fitness test kicked our ass, but pretty easily surpassed the minimum standards, so we start tomorrow.
I’m looking forward to it and dreading it at the same time.

I think the first days were the worst for me, then my body realized its only like an hour of punishment a day and it got much better from there. I forgot another note from my post above

great minds...
my friends and i had been planning since last week to all get together tonight at my house and do the fitness test, then have a last meal (juicy burger) before starting the program. crazy that we picked the same day to start this thing up.
a few years ago i sorta started my own workout/weight loss thing, lost 60 pounds in 4 months and got into great shape so i’m dedicated to doing the same level of hard work. i remember that after the first two weeks working out becomes part of your daily routine and you actually feel weird not doing it, so i’m looking forward to that feeling again.
good luck and every gameday thread when we strike out with a runner on third and less than two outs lets knock out 20 push ups.

Since I’m 6’2" and only 175, my goal is more fitness than weight loss. Adding muscle mass would be nice, but my primary goal is to tighten up in the mid-section, improve flexibility and get in better cardio shape.
We just got done with Day 1 (Chest & Back, Ab Ripper X). Pretty hardcore by my standards. While we couldn’t do the number of reps they did on the chest and back video, we felt pretty good about what we did. (Except those f’in diamond push-ups, OMG!) The Ab Ripper X was really hard. I think it’ll be easier as my flexibility improves. My legs were still sore from that wall squat last night in the fitness test, which made a lot of those elevated leg exercises difficult.
How did it go for you?

you did day 1 on the same day as your fitness test? you, sir, are more man than i. yesterday we watched the first dvd, went out and bought the equipment, then did the fitness test… that ate up about 3 hours total, so we are starting Day 1 tonight.
i hear you on the tightening up- i’m 6’0, 188, and trying to get my core done right. a few years ago my college job was selling tv’s for the Good Guys (remember them?) and moving all of those 32" and 36" tv’s wrecked my back. luckily, my friend is a pilates instructor, so i get two free lessons a week, which has been helping and really makes my back feel stretched out. i plan on keeping that up while knocking out the p90x stuff.
lets keep updated and use the fact that the dodgers are doing so well without manny to fuel our internal fire.

Clarification
We did the fitness test last night and got up at 5:30 this morning and did Day 1. I was still feeling the effects of the fitness test from less than 12 hours earlier, though.
So you’ll be one day behind me for the next 90 days.
Maybe we should check in with a new fanshot every couple of weeks.
Would that be annoying to you other people or would you be interested to hear how it’s going and or like to join in?

Diet
How reasonable is the diet or nutrition recommendation? It is the five mini meals a day thing that is hard for me to do. Do you have to drink three or four protein shakes a day for it to be effective?
by Squire_Boone on Jun 3, 2009 11:18 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Its definitely doable if you are capable of following the recipes when preparing food. Hardest part for me is sticking with it on weekends or on nights out with friends
The idea of having so many meals per day is to increase your metabolism and keep your blood sugar steady. If you don’t do it, you will still get in MUCH better shape than doing nothing, but its kind of silly to work your ass off in the gym for 1+ hours per day and then lag on the eating part that doesn’t require sweating or more than a few minutes of time
Protein is a big part of the diet plan, but its not a liquid diet. The nutrition guide gives you info on how to figure out your optimum calorie, fat, protein, and carb intake for each of the phases of the workouts. It lists how many portions of each type of food to eat each day and lists what foods satisfy that requirement. At first glance its like 150 pages and its a little overwhelming, but its mostly recipies. Its pretty easy once you find recipies that you like and figure out that they are itemized to what portions it fulfils. Also has a guide of what you can order at fast food places and what nutritional value they have
by m34josh on Jun 4, 2009 2:11 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks for the info
I knew it came with a nutrition guide, which is nice. It is good to know that it is a “doable” nutrition plan.
So, does the diet plan recommend the five meals a day? I know that is best, it is just kind of hard for me to do with my work schedule.
by Squire_Boone on Jun 4, 2009 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not necessarily five ‘meals’ but breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, and dinner. I think you’ll find all diets demand a similar approach because of the metabolism and blood sugar effects
You could always prepare everything in the morning and take it to work if you had too
by m34josh on Jun 4, 2009 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
True
Its all about conditioning myself to eat differently. Because we are raised to have three meals a day, we build that into our schedules. I am sure I could find a way to build 5 meals a day into my schedule.
Thanks for all your help.

This program requires over an hour a day. If I had to drive to the gym and back, it would be over an hour-and-half. I look at this as more efficient, less expensive (especially since Mrs. Goofus, Goofus Jr and I are all doing it with one purchase) and has a “program” element.
