first.... or something like that.
If my head is full of white hairs by the end of this season.. I blame Brian Wilson. (I'm only 22, dammit!)
Sadowski officially in the rotation
Sanchez option down after tomorrow, methinks? or a bullpen trade inc?
good to hear… kind of missed the game since it was so early yesterday.. does anyone know why we moved to the bullpen in the 6th inning? we had a decent lead didn’t we?

Man, this team sure loves players with extremely limited major league success.

What else would you have them do with the 5th starter spot? Bring up somebody else? It’s not like it should go to Sanchez….
Eh, it’s not so much the decision as the thought process that I’m pretty sure was behind it.

I’m not sure what the reason for thinking that would be.
I don’t think there’s anyone who wasn’t happy with how he pitched in his first start but, in AAA this year, Sadowski had a poor WHIP, a poor walk rate, a poor strikeout rate, a poor GB rate.
One scoreless start (in which he walked 3 and struck out 2) shouldn’t overshadow his overall track record. And yet, it does. I’m going to hope he has another good game in his next start, but he really does remind me of Ryan Jensen tbh.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
I’d take Ryan Jensen type performance right about now. Anything is better then the shit Sanchez was passing off as performance.
It is hard to believe people cannot separate potential vs performance. Why keep sending El Guapo out there expecting different results?

is Sanchez playing coy with the organization? Is he waiting to spring his “betterness” for the pennant drive?
So is Francisco Liriano, and Shawn Estes, and Eric Gagne and on and on and on.
You can name a ton of people who are better than Sadowski. But talent is not always reflective of skill. Also I don’t see how the Giants have better options at this point without rushing Tim 2 or Mad Bum. Pucetas I wouldn’t mind, but how much different is he from Sadowski? Other than having better minor league success.
Sanchez is talented sure, but he’s pitched like crap this year and it was getting worse and worse every start.
uh you just answered your own question
better minor league success
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
Delmon Young had great minor league success. WHO THE FUCK CARES ABOUT IT?!
Jesus. Baseball is not such a predictive sport. Nothing is. You can make a decent guess but you never know how anything is going to work out unless you take a risk. That’s what life is about.
Can someone’s minor league numbers help you evaluate said player? Sure. Can it even be a good indicator for how a player might perform in the majors? Absolutely. But to use it as some end all be all of decision making is fucking ludicrous.
Heh. Let’s call up Bocock for another go ’round.
/winks
Ya Never Know!
Randy Winn is in time out until his OBP gets back over .330.
It’s not about numbers, it’s about talent. The numbers are just useful to illuminate the talent. And Jonathan Sanchez has far more talent than Sadowski.
It’s perfectly defensible to start Sadowski instead for a while. But if the Giants want to win, they need to focus on getting Sanchez up to his potential.
I entirely agree. And Sanchez can’t get up to his potential in the rotation at present. He was clearly getting worse the past couple of starts. He needs to work on things in the pen. His outing yesterday was promising as he actually threw some nice changeups for once.
Both Cain and Zito made trips to the pen and improved afterwords. Granted it took Zito a bit longer to get going, but at least he’s reliable now.
But Sanchez’s last start was actually a marked improvement, wasn’t it?

No, how? If not for Molina blocking a bunch of balls in the dirt it would have been much worse.

And listen, I’m not trying to be the other side of the fence here. I don’t really have that much of a problem with Sadowski getting another start. We’ll put aside that Bochy was pretty adamant about the fact that isn’t going to be a start-to-start arrangement (“He’s in the rotation”, Bochy said). I don’t mind him getting another start. It’s the apparent reasons for that start that I’m critical of.
He pitched SIX innings. “Give him another shot” is not a good reason. I’m fine with Sanchez getting more of a mental break even though I’m a bit of an agnostic as far as that is concerned. But Sadowski hasn’t EARNED anything, and a team should never just “give a guy another shot” based on nothing but six innings of work.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.
by howtheyscored on Jun 29, 2009 5:21 PM PDT up reply actions
If that’s the case, then there are much, much better options than Sadowski out there. And Bochy saying that this isn’t intended to be temporary scares me. I know, they could easily be empty words… but why say them at all?
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.
by howtheyscored on Jun 29, 2009 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, yeah.
He did pretty well for six innings against the A’s with nothing but the fastball. If he can get command of a breaking pitch, he’ll suddenly become very good.
He won’t though. Sanchez’s arm slot is such that I don’t think he’ll ever have decent command. He loses it too easily.
“He won’t” and “I don’t think he’ll ever” are two very, very different things.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
Calm down, dude. Why would there be any reason to think that Sadowski > Pucetas? It’s not just stats – Pucetas has gotten the better rankings, better scouting reports, etc. He’s younger. He seems to have better stuff. It seems like a no-brainer. Obviously Sadowski was best for the last start due to the timing of it, but other than 6 nice innings just now, I’m not sure why anyone might think he’s a better option than Pucetas going forward. And if you’re really going to decide that based on 6 IP, rather than the entirety of their career so far… well.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
I would prefer Pucetas be in the 5th spot. But I have no problem with them giving Sadowski another chance or two. What’s the harm?
I just have a problem with how much people bitch. The team is contending, despite being average at best, and they have the 2nd best record in the league. Shouldn’t we be pleased with that?
On a sidenote, it just goes to show what kind of parity is in the game right now….
I said it before and I’ll say it again: my team doing something right for the wrong reason is not something that I’m prepared to celebrate. And I’m not entirely convinced that this is even something right.
I do also think it’s a small deal at this point, as much as I’m talking about it. If it goes past one more start (and Bochy seems to think it will), then it will start to be a real problem.

PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
He earned another start. And at this time it is a 5th spot in a rotation looking for someone who performs. Sanchez had his turn. Failed. Time for another suitor.
I agree with this. Do I kinda doubt Sadowski is the longterm answer— yes. Did he earn another start? Absolutely.
It’s kinda the same thing with the Aaron Rowand leadoff experiment— leave him there until he fails.

The are not basing these decisions on stats over a small sample size. They are evaluating the mechanics they see that are producing these results using scouting talent that we here frankly just do not have.

All teams do this. And also I think it’s even more of a complex situation with the Giants because usually they have little to no options when it comes to filling a specific hole or need. No matter who they go with, the guy is less than ideal and always mediocre to terrible.
And I seem to remember a lot of people actually wanting Burriss to start out of spring training, I have no idea why though…
Because they were overreacting to small sample size results.

My bad. But I doubt that was all that went into the decision making. Burriss play last year probably had something to do with it too.

I have a deep love for NS, thanks in part to a friend of mine who loves the album and convinced me of its brilliance.
I love JWH but it’s back end of the top 10 for me. I’m actually going through with another friend right now and listening to every album (we’re on H61 right now) and then reviewing them, so we’ll see if my opinion on JWH changes this time around (my opinions on Another Side and BIABH both changed for the better so far.)

PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
Oh, and
I realized this today when I was listening to Live 1964: Joey pisses me off way more than Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll does. Like, I know Hattie Carroll’s mostly wrong and Zantzinger didn’t really murder her and it was absolutely an accident, but that “William Zanzinger with a 6 month sentence” still hits me hard, even though I know it’s wrong and I still kinda like the song.
And Joey is wrong too and doing a bad thing too (and even less bad – canonizing a dead bad guy is way less bad than ruining someone’s life), but I think it’s horrible, even though I don’t mind it as a song.
I have no explanation for this.
GROUGTHINK ALERT
I like Hattie Carroll because of the AWESOME refrain/chorus. It makes up for the dishonesty of the rest of the song.
I hate the song Joey for both the song itself and for canonizing a horrible dead guy.

though I’d put Highway 61 at # 2. BOTT is the single best Dylan album IMO.
Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.
BOTT is better, but I have a sentimental thing with Highway 61. Before I got it, I had only heard Dylan’s early folky stuff (except for the really famous songs – Knocking on Heavens Door, Tangled Up in Blue, etc.). I was completely blown away the first time I heard it. Tombstone Blues, Highway 61 Revisited, Desolation Row – I just couldn’t believe anyone could write anything like that.

that’s what makes it hard. and to be clear, I’m talking about the Bootleg version of Idiot Rain, not that awful Hard Rain rendition.
Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.
I like the BOTT version better than the Bootleg one. Maybe it’s just because I’m more used to it, but I think it should be an angry song, and you get that a lot better with BOTT than Bootleg.
