I’m not sure what the reason for thinking that would be.

I don’t think there’s anyone who wasn’t happy with how he pitched in his first start but, in AAA this year, Sadowski had a poor WHIP, a poor walk rate, a poor strikeout rate, a poor GB rate.

One scoreless start (in which he walked 3 and struck out 2) shouldn’t overshadow his overall track record. And yet, it does. I’m going to hope he has another good game in his next start, but he really does remind me of Ryan Jensen tbh.

So is Francisco Liriano, and Shawn Estes, and Eric Gagne and on and on and on.

You can name a ton of people who are better than Sadowski. But talent is not always reflective of skill. Also I don’t see how the Giants have better options at this point without rushing Tim 2 or Mad Bum. Pucetas I wouldn’t mind, but how much different is he from Sadowski? Other than having better minor league success.

Sanchez is talented sure, but he’s pitched like crap this year and it was getting worse and worse every start.

Jesus. Baseball is not such a predictive sport. Nothing is. You can make a decent guess but you never know how anything is going to work out unless you take a risk. That’s what life is about.

Can someone’s minor league numbers help you evaluate said player? Sure. Can it even be a good indicator for how a player might perform in the majors? Absolutely. But to use it as some end all be all of decision making is fucking ludicrous.

by oldjacket on Jun 29, 2009 5:10 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s not about numbers, it’s about talent. The numbers are just useful to illuminate the talent. And Jonathan Sanchez has far more talent than Sadowski.

It’s perfectly defensible to start Sadowski instead for a while. But if the Giants want to win, they need to focus on getting Sanchez up to his potential.

by Evan on Jun 29, 2009 5:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I entirely agree. And Sanchez can’t get up to his potential in the rotation at present. He was clearly getting worse the past couple of starts. He needs to work on things in the pen. His outing yesterday was promising as he actually threw some nice changeups for once.

Both Cain and Zito made trips to the pen and improved afterwords. Granted it took Zito a bit longer to get going, but at least he’s reliable now.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 29, 2009 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions

But Sanchez’s last start was actually a marked improvement, wasn’t it?

by Hobbes2d on Jun 29, 2009 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, that kind of does mean that.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

by howtheyscored on Jun 29, 2009 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions

And listen, I’m not trying to be the other side of the fence here. I don’t really have that much of a problem with Sadowski getting another start. We’ll put aside that Bochy was pretty adamant about the fact that isn’t going to be a start-to-start arrangement (“He’s in the rotation”, Bochy said). I don’t mind him getting another start. It’s the apparent reasons for that start that I’m critical of.

He pitched SIX innings. “Give him another shot” is not a good reason. I’m fine with Sanchez getting more of a mental break even though I’m a bit of an agnostic as far as that is concerned. But Sadowski hasn’t EARNED anything, and a team should never just “give a guy another shot” based on nothing but six innings of work.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

by howtheyscored on Jun 29, 2009 5:21 PM PDT up reply actions

My guess it’s more of an indication of how they feel about Sanchez than anything…

by Hobbes2d on Jun 29, 2009 5:27 PM PDT up reply actions

If that’s the case, then there are much, much better options than Sadowski out there. And Bochy saying that this isn’t intended to be temporary scares me. I know, they could easily be empty words… but why say them at all?

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

by howtheyscored on Jun 29, 2009 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, yeah.

He did pretty well for six innings against the A’s with nothing but the fastball. If he can get command of a breaking pitch, he’ll suddenly become very good.

by Evan on Jun 29, 2009 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions

He won’t though. Sanchez’s arm slot is such that I don’t think he’ll ever have decent command. He loses it too easily.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 29, 2009 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions

“He won’t” and “I don’t think he’ll ever” are two very, very different things.

Calm down, dude. Why would there be any reason to think that Sadowski > Pucetas? It’s not just stats – Pucetas has gotten the better rankings, better scouting reports, etc. He’s younger. He seems to have better stuff. It seems like a no-brainer. Obviously Sadowski was best for the last start due to the timing of it, but other than 6 nice innings just now, I’m not sure why anyone might think he’s a better option than Pucetas going forward. And if you’re really going to decide that based on 6 IP, rather than the entirety of their career so far… well.

I would prefer Pucetas be in the 5th spot. But I have no problem with them giving Sadowski another chance or two. What’s the harm?

I just have a problem with how much people bitch. The team is contending, despite being average at best, and they have the 2nd best record in the league. Shouldn’t we be pleased with that?

On a sidenote, it just goes to show what kind of parity is in the game right now….

I said it before and I’ll say it again: my team doing something right for the wrong reason is not something that I’m prepared to celebrate. And I’m not entirely convinced that this is even something right.

I do also think it’s a small deal at this point, as much as I’m talking about it. If it goes past one more start (and Bochy seems to think it will), then it will start to be a real problem.

On a flight today from Min to OC and the stewardess saw me wearing my SF shirt. She approached me and told me that she worked the Giants flight last night into STL. She mentioned that they have the choice of 5 different in-flight meals and endless hors d’oeuvres (sp?).

I asked he about certain players, but she had no idea who was who. Though she did mention that there was one specific player who loved to eat…

by jponry on Jun 29, 2009 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, and

I realized this today when I was listening to Live 1964: Joey pisses me off way more than Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll does. Like, I know Hattie Carroll’s mostly wrong and Zantzinger didn’t really murder her and it was absolutely an accident, but that “William Zanzinger with a 6 month sentence” still hits me hard, even though I know it’s wrong and I still kinda like the song.

And Joey is wrong too and doing a bad thing too (and even less bad – canonizing a dead bad guy is way less bad than ruining someone’s life), but I think it’s horrible, even though I don’t mind it as a song.

I have no explanation for this.

GROUGTHINK ALERT

by groug on Jun 29, 2009 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I like Hattie Carroll because of the AWESOME refrain/chorus. It makes up for the dishonesty of the rest of the song.

I hate the song Joey for both the song itself and for canonizing a horrible dead guy.

by Aadik on Jun 29, 2009 5:22 PM PDT up reply actions

BOTT is better, but I have a sentimental thing with Highway 61. Before I got it, I had only heard Dylan’s early folky stuff (except for the really famous songs – Knocking on Heavens Door, Tangled Up in Blue, etc.). I was completely blown away the first time I heard it. Tombstone Blues, Highway 61 Revisited, Desolation Row – I just couldn’t believe anyone could write anything like that.
