Trading for a Right Handed Bat

I was watching sportscenter and after the giants vs brewers highlights were done, peter gammons said "the giants are dangerous and dont be suprised if sabean looks to aquire a big right handed bat."

With that said, who do you guys think are some realistic options for us via trade?

I would list off a few names off the top of my head but I know thats a rookie move that will result in extra roasting from the McCovey Chronicles veterans so I will leave the options up to you all. Hopefully we can get a realistic list going...thoughts?

Jeff Baker! Jeff Baker! For the love of Jeff Baker, Jeff Baker!

He certainly can mash lefties, but that’s about all he can do. Plus, he’s just getting back from a wrist injury, which is never good in the short term for a hitter.

Proud father of Juan Carlos Perez. Think Albert Pujols at second.

get serious

3 out of 5 of those guys will be FAs at the end of the year, so unless their teams are giving them away for C level prospects (which I doubt) then no thanks. That leaves Milledge and Dye. I don’t want Milledge (he’s never hit consistently even when playing in a hitters park), and Dye is just another high salary, fading old vet that can’t play D and will probably freak out at the difficulties of hitting in AT&T.

Let’s go younger and cheaper, with some potential for growth. That way if it doesn’t work out we’re not tied down with a big salary. The Angels, Brewers, Nats, and Marlins need pitching (which we have) and they have hitters in the Majors or at AAA that they would probably give up for the right package. Specifically I’m interested in Brandon Wood, Dan Uggla, Josh Willingham, and JJ Hardy.

by Fla-Giant on Jun 28, 2009 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Josh willingham can’t even play in the Nationals OF, his defense is that bad.

J.J. Hardy is an excellent defensive shortstop with one good offensive year, he is a league average or below offensive SS (Rob Neyer did a piece on this a couple of weeks back I think)

As for Wood and Uggla, I want them, but at what cost? Tim Alderson? Madison Bumgarner? perhaps more?

Really, unless the Giants are willing to trade REAL talent, they won’t get REAL cheap young hitting in return.

by jctGamer on Jun 28, 2009 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont think Wood or Uggla would cost that much, specifically Wood.

Willingham is just under average defensively in LF.

Started playing there for the Royals this year in spring training, and even then his time there was limited because of the WBC. Started out poorly, seemed OK on the routine plays by the time the regular season started, but shortly after that Gordon was hurt and he was moved back to third. Slow turning the double play, pretty big for 2B, looks like he’s a prime candidate for a career-ending takedown by Fielder or somebody.

Suppose the Giants and Rockies are battling for the division title (loser will NOT get the wild card). Giants are facing the Padres and the Rockies are facing the Dodgers. why would he sign with the Giants? A bunch of teams would want him. The Phillies wanted Sheffield and he signed with their leading rivals, so I’m sure they would be in on Ordonez. And which ballpark would you think he would prefer to play in? Not only that, but if other AL teams were interested, I bet he would prefer to sign with them. I’m sure he wouldn’t want to switch leagues and face a bunch of new pitchers in his walk year.

we need to understand..

… that in order to acquire a big bat Sabean will more than likely need to give up at least 1 top tier prospect, otherwise it will be difficult. I keep reading postings about uggla/cantu for sanchez… but it has already been said that those deals have been turned down on the Marlins side, they have no interest in Sanchez. I do not see Sanchez being the center piece of any deal, unless it is for a lesser caliber player. however, his stock could rise again if he can prove to a very reliable reliever. he was impressive today striking out the side in the 9th. so lets cross our fingers for that one! i think Holliday is the most realistic acquisition. His contract ends at the end of the year, and i think theres no way he stays in Oakland. He’s a proven National league hitter, he knows the pitching staffs well, i think a change of scenery and chance to make the playoffs would spark him. Yes he is not putting up his usual numbers, but his current offensive numbers are better than anyone we can throw in LF, plus he brings strecth run/playoff/world series experience, and thats priceless. with that said we may be able to get him for a relatively cheap package of prospects, and a couple of vets currently on the roster, we may have to throw in one of our bigger prospects, but as long as it’s not posey, bumgarner, noonan, or alderson i am ok with it…. i don’t think beane wants to wind up empty handed at seasons end once Holliday walks.

by Do_the_research on Jun 28, 2009 7:05 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

and...

not to mention, we have room to add on the payroll… and we can afford to offer him an extension.

by Do_the_research on Jun 28, 2009 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Boras doesn’t believe in extensions for his clients. He likes to get out on the market and let multiple teams drive the price up. This is why Holliday isn’t still a Rockie.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

If Beane lets Holliday walk at the end of the year, he’s going to get Type A FA compensation for him. Therefore, if you’re going to trade for Holliday, you’re going to have to offer him something better than that. This probably means you WOULD have to offer one of your big prospects for him. We’ve also talked in the past about why Beane would probably prefer to do business with any other team but the Giants. I would look in another direction for right handed help.

Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!

by rxmeister on Jun 29, 2009 8:32 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe

Type A picks are sandwich round picks. Giants top prospects are guys who have already performed well in the minors. Your argument implies that Beane is 100% likely to turn a sandwich pick (or one of two, I’m not sure what they’d get) into someone as highly-regarded as the Giants’ best.

I’ll bet a look at the A’s drafting history doesn’t give Billy that kind of certainty.

Type A free agents net the signing team’s first-round pick, which is top-15 protected. The team that loses the player would also get a sandwich pick.

Posey and MadBum went higher than that. Alderson went at 22, four picks before the A’s picked James Simmons.

“Better than that” is a pretty variable term when it comes to FA compensation, though. It could be a late 1st rounder, it could be a 2nd rounder. Heck it could even be a 3rd rounder (as for instance in the Blue Jays case with AJ Burnett this year). And there’s a heckuva difference between pick #16 and pick #100.

But back on point

I would be open to trading for Holliday had it been with another team other than Oakland. They only traded for him with the intentions to fleece a desperate GM. They will still get draft picks should he walk because he’s gonna be a “Type A” free agent.

by SeeingStars on Jun 28, 2009 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Depends on economy

Any team trading for a soon to be FA with the idea of getting compensation draft picks should tread lightly. If that FA you traded for does not sign quickly then the team must be willing to offer arbitration. The team offering arbitration must make sure they ready for that FA to accept their arbitration offer if the FA cannot find an acceptable contract offer from another team.

Holliday’s agent, Scott Boras, did this with Jason Varitek last season. So if economy is still sluggish and contract offers are not what players are looking for some FA may be willing to take one year arbitration and see if the economy improves a year later

by wilriv21 on Jun 28, 2009 7:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You have to think Holliday would be in high demand this offseason. Other then Jason Bay, he’s the only impact bat available. I would think he would have no problem finding a secure contract.

by SeeingStars on Jun 28, 2009 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am pretty sure they A’s have th moneys for next season. I am sure they would rather spread it arround but a non garanteed contract to a type A free agent would be nice position to be in. It is not like Holiday is 36 and you have to worry about his health/body rapidly delcining.

Yes, This is still a 79 win squad.

A's "worst" case

If they buy out Giambi’s option for next year that frees up $5.25 MM. Crosby is not going to getting paid $5.25MM. So that is $10.5 MM. That should be about enough to carry Holiday to the trade deadline in 2010.

Side note: The A’s will still be on the hook for at least $15MM to Chavez even after this season. I had thought his option year was 2010 not 2012. Man, that has got to hurt.

If the plan is to sign Holliday for 2010 then it is fine. If it is to trade for him this season and then reap comp draft picks tread carefully

I agree.
I think the get compensation picks is ussaly a smart plan for a longer term stratagy. I also think this is the worst conditions to be trying that.

Would Winn be a Type A?

If so, we could trade Winn and a prospect and eat part of Winn’s salary.

The A’s would get an OF back to play the rest of the year, they’d still get their comp picks and gain a propspect.

B-Money and Randy as type A’s would be nice. A bunch more draft picks to get a 2nd wave of prospects coming in to complement our current big boys.

teams will be scared to offer Arbitration because He might take it.

by jctGamer on Jun 28, 2009 10:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe, but I feel like that’s really overblown. You offer them both arbitration and let them know they’ll be backups if they accept. Worst case scenario, you’ve got each of them on a one year, fairly inexpensive deal. Randy would be an amazing fourth outfielder and I think Bengie has too much pride to accept going into next year as a backup.

Proud father of Juan Carlos Perez. Think Albert Pujols at second.

by marcello on Jun 28, 2009 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not sure that would work. Both of them would think that the Giants are just bluffing them with the “backup” threat because they don’t want them to accept arbitration. They also both probably have egos big enough to think that even if the Giants’ are serious about the backup roles, they will come to spring training and win the everyday job anyway.

If they both accept arbitration and are back on the Giants they will both start. This is a team that is still running ORLYA out there. All that veterany goodness is not going to sit on the bench.

what kind of deal can you propose that the Marlins would be willing to accept?

by wilriv21 on Jun 28, 2009 8:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Salary relief might do more to convince them than most other teams. I’m surprised taking on bad contracts aren’t used as trade assets like they are in the NBA. I know there’s no salary cap but it would still be quite useful.

Bruce Bochy would like you to look at the career numbers and stop complaining.

OK

but what sets the Giants apart from any other team that wants to trade for Uggla? There are reports that at least 6-10 teams can take on salary in a trade

Marlins are not selling

they’re 3 games out, why would they sell? On top of that, just about every news outlet has reported that the Marlins owner does NOT want to sell. They think they can contend.

I don’t know what they are looking for, but considering the bounties received for McClouth and DeRosa, it might not have to be elite talent.

I really really want the Giants to go after Iwamura. The new reports is that his ACL tear was not as bad as originally thought and he can recover through rehab. He was a consistent 2.5 WAR player his first two years while shuffling positions in the infield, but his 09 points to a potential jump from that. Taking in age/cost, I think he makes more sense than O-Dog, Polanco, DeRosa, or Uggla.

Of course this does nothing for us this year, but we’re not getting any impact bat w/o trading big. Anyways, a lineup of this looks pretty league average:

Rowand
Iwamura
Posey
Sandoval
Schierholtz
Lewis
Ishikawa
Renteria
Pitcher

(Of course the 1B/Corner infield spots are dependent on who sticks between the Ishikawa/Guzman/Bowker/Lewis/etc. cluster).

What big prospects did the cards give up for DeRosa?

Some teams will just look to unload salary. These trades are usually lopsided with one team getting a good player and the other team dumping his salary.

by bradleybear on Jun 28, 2009 10:06 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The indians got Chris Perez and a player TBA. Perez has closer potential stuff. hes got a 2:1 K:BB rate and his WHIP is around 1.3. He’s only 23 and has a ton more upside than DeRosa has after this season. I’d say the tribe made out pretty well for a team 14 games under .500

What pieces can the Giants offer?

Relievers: Howry, Valdez, Miller, Medders

OF: Fred Lewis

2b: Frandsen, Burriss

Pitching prospects: Pucetas, Maday, Snyder, Tanner, Surkamp, Hinshaw, Matos, English etc

Any chance some combo of this can bring a bat we need?

That’s 4 below average relievers, one mediocre LF, two bad 2B, and a bunch of C prospects at best (except for maybe Tanner, who might scratch a B-). Hard to see this get us a good bat.

by Goofus on Jun 30, 2009 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right-handed bat?

I knew they made gloves specifically for lefties or righties, but I thought bats went both ways.

The more I think about these scenarios, the more I think we should stand pat and/or upgrade from within (baring some team being desperate and willing to be hosed.)

The tam has played good ball despite getting bad performance from 2B and 1B. Downs (or Frandsen) upgrades 2B and Ishikawa appears to be upgrading himself at 1B, where Bowker/Guzman provide and fallback option.

In the outfiled, things have been upgraded by the freeing of Nate. Between him, Scott, Randy, Fred and Torres, there’s enough options and defense to put a fairly decent outfield out there every day, especially in the “Goofus Principle” is applied.

If Bochy would just do a better job filling out a lineup card, I’d be happy with hanging on to our future. Some combination of Rowand, Sandoval and Schierholts should be batting 3-4-5, Winn or Lewis should be leading off and Benjie should be no higher than 6th.

My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman

by Goofus on Jun 29, 2009 8:59 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

In general I agree with you, although I’d bring up Bowker and risk losing Lewis when I optioned him to Fresno. I don’t think we can trade for the kind of bat we need without giving up too much of the farm system, so I’d prefer we upgrade from within, where we can.

I am here as well.

If this team thinks it is competing then an Adam Kennedy type move ( claimed off the waivers for an interesting but fungible farm hand) make sense. As long as this team is stays open to adding payroll the waiver wire in August should be real interesting.

As long as the Big Head plays the kids as much as possible between now and any such move there should be enough time to fairly evaluate most of them. Adding a big contract, older but still potent bat for the final 1-2 months that way might be the best of all worlds for this squad.

Yes, This is still a 79 win squad.

Keep the team intact

It’s been so far so good in a season where we will all cry just to see the Giants stay in playoff contention into the summer and possibly September. I know the offense is still in the bottom ranks of the league but there’s no guarantee a new bat with pop will light up the offense immediately, especially since Giants will not trade for a big time hitter like the Dodgers did with Manny.

I'm well aware of his struggles this season

But I couldn’t resist as I’ve been a huge fan of Wells for a long time. Just last season he posted OPS+ of 121 I think.

I mention Wells because I think he can be had for basically nothing while Rios will take real talent. The Giants have said time and time again that their biggest trade chip at the deadline is the ability to take on money.

Well, Show me the money.
