hooray
guess it’s too bad he went to the birds, but on the other hand Cain, Sandoval, and Bumgarner aren’t waiting at SFO for the next flight to STL.

Beltre was a trade target? Please NO!

Hmmm, all they gave up was a bullpen are and a PTBNL for DeRosa, a guy who would be leading the Giants in homers and RBI and plays position(s) of need. Why wasn’t the Giants front office in on this?

its a nice bullpen arm, and the ptbnl could be something nice.

Eh, bullpen arms we seem to be in pretty good supply of (in fact, sss alert, Bobby Howry’s the only guy in our pen who’s not significantly outperforming Perez’ career ERA+ this season), and the list of ptbnl who anybody’s ever heard of is one of the shortest lists in baseball history. Really other than the guy who got traded for himself once I doubt there’s another good reason ever to take notice of the revealed identity of a ptbnl.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

yeah, DeRosa went pretty cheap, and if you lose him after the season you’ll get compensation picks. Sabean looks dumb here, because he made a comment about how anyone who makes a deal right now will be overpaying, yet that clearly wasn’t the case with DeRosa.

There are also a few other interesting trades listed here, such as the player traded during a double header and the only trade in-season of managers in major league history.

let’s trade our fence for Lefty Grove

Chris Perez is basically the equivelant of Sergio Romo. He hasn’t had as much MLB success but he was a lot more highly touted as a prospect by scouts, throws very hard, and is left handed.
I wonder if maybe the player to be named later is somebody from the 2008 draft?

Perez is RH.
But yes he is pretty highly touted. He’s not exactly some crappy pitcher. And the PTBNL could be good too.

The Cardinals expected Perez to eventually take over the closer’s duties this year. The continued adequateness of Ryan Franklin has lessened their ardor, plus they still have Jason Motte as a future closer. Perez was fairly expendable for the Cards, but Perez still has tons of potential, and the Indians are desperate for pitching.

nah. He’s got a better pedigree than Romo. Its more like he’s Valdez but without the injuries, and more leveraged success.
By the way, the Indians GM said that the PTBNL was key here, so do expect a real prospect, if not a big one.

Valdez without the injuries is kind of like O.J. without the murders

Perez has never been a real starter candidate though. Merkin before the injuries was pegged as a top of the rotation guy….

He was, quite a ways back, though. After the first (or first major injury) he was pretty much going to be relief, though…and as that, a similar prospect to Perez.

Ya, according to the trade rumors site, Gammons has the Giants in on Teahan. Maybe they prefer someone not as good and cheaper, but under team control for a few years

Merkin + PTBNL?
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

by all means, let’s go out and get players “not as good” as Mark DeRosa.

Shame about Beltre. This might make him a bargain free agent over the winter, though.
by Evan on Jun 28, 2009 8:25 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Just how bad does the Bavasi era look now?
Beltre was saying he was hurt last year and they were basically telling him to rub dirt on it and stop being a whinner. Then would leak stories about him being a bad influance. Now he might not even be a type “B” free agent. His will be an intresting story to watch this off season if if the Giants are not intrested.
Yes, This is still a 79 win squad.

I dont know..
I would of been ok with the upgrade that DeRosa could have brought this team offensively. He wouldnt have been the answer to all our offensive problems, but he would have added some hitting we have been missing.
I do think that DeRosa is going to look like a much better trade in STL than he would of here, though. Hitting in front of or behind Pujols will certainly make this look like a bargain trade.
