At some point, the Giants run out of 40 man roster spots for 16 yo signings. Henry Sosa is on the 40 man roster for this reason, in a year AnVil and in 2 Ralph Rodriguez will hvae to be on there as well. Who knows who else is in the pipeline that may surprise.

Players are eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft who are not on their major league organization’s forty man roster and:
- were signed at age 19 or older and have been in the organization for three years; or
- were signed at age 18 or younger and have been in the organization for four years.

I’m bummed but if we can’t get Mateo for 2 or 2.5 mill, maybe we can spread that dough around and sign a bunch of other young Latin kids who maybe aren’t on everyone’s radar. The majority of these Latin players who become all-stars weren’t really big commodities at 16. The only two I can remember are Miguel Cabrera and Felix Hernandez. Everyone else kinda came outta nowhere and weren’t signed for all that much.

This whole story is BS. Read it closely. Nowhere does it even imply that the source is anybody remotely connected to the Cardinals. It’s obviously a rumor started by the Mateo camp to try to jack up his signing bonus a week before the signing date. I think they’ve been taking lessons from Boras – remember how he got Zito and ARod all those extra millions by convincing some naive GM that they were in competition with another team(s). No way this story came from the Cards. If they are really interested in signing him why would they tell their competition how much of a bonus they’re planning to offer? So relax, we’re still very much in the running for Mateo’s services. I doubt he gets $3M in this down economic environment.

3.5 is a lot for Mateo. If he can’t stick at CF, his value drops considerably. Of course, his power could develop and that wouldn’t be true, but that is a major question for him.
