there were just too many stories out there for all of them to be false. Why was Michael Jackson having these problems? Was he the only rich celebrity out there to be sued? Why is he the one who continually faced accusations about child molestation? What adult has all these sleepovers with young boys? Don’t let your love for his music and his talent obscure your better judgement.

well put. How quickly the public forgets. While never convicted there is a very good chance this man was a horrible horrible freak of a person. Playing good music doesn’t absolve you in my eyes.

he was acquitted in ONE case. The others he paid to go away. The first one he paid 20 MILLION DOLLARS to make it go away. What innocent man writes a check for that amount?

A rich one who wants his reputation in tact, and would rather avoid a protracted legal battle that ends in people who have no knowledge speculating on how he rolls?

Plus if by paying the rest of your family is left alone by such a scandal as it plays out over years and decades. NO, I can’t fault a guy for paying to get that if he as the means to do it.
That being said if I am on the street with a minor and I see M.J. I would cross the street to walk on the other side. I would also wonder at any other adult walk witha kid that did not do the same.

paying someone off is admitting guilt and buying your way out of a possible jail sentence. We argue enough over baseball so I don’t want to start an argument over something like this, but I think anyone who thinks that this 50 year old man having little boys over for all these sleepovers is normal and innocent is incredibly naive. There’s just too much already that’s been said about this for this to have no substance. Not just the families looking to make money, but people that worked for him, and his own sister, for God’s sake!! Not everyone that spoke out was lying and looking for a payday. Some were actually looking out for the best interest of the children.

LOL'ing because that's untrue? It is true.
It isn’t quite that direct, but it works like this: a settlement of a civil lawsuit would gurantee that the victim & his family would not co-operate with the prosecution in a criminal case. Without the victim and victim’s family’s help, there is no way the DA can proceed. Charges dismissed. So yeah, if there is decent evidence, settling a suit buys oneself out of a possible jail sentence.
Unless you were LOL’ing at the claim that settling a suit is admission of guilt, which is a different question, and you would be right— maybe, maybe not. I think in THIS case it does show guilt (explained elsewhere), but it doesn’t always.

Look:
There’s no doubt he was a weird dude, and had a fondness for children. The guy basically acted like a child himself.
That doesn’t mean he is a child molester. The guy never had a childhood and pretty clearly decided to have one later in life.
I mean, he built the fucking neverland ranch. How much more child like can you get?
He was acquitted in one case in which he was accused by 4 people. He liked to play with kids and was a really weird dude. There is essentially NO evidence that he was a child molester than a few sketchy stories from some of these kids parents.
While you can say why would you pay someone 20m if you were not guilty – one could easily say why would any parent accept money as compensation for a 50 year old man abusing their child? That’s essentially prostituting your child.
I’d think that, if these things actually happened – those parents wouldn’t accept a settlement and wouldn’t rest until them man that committed them was in jail.
There is a reason that those cases were private lawsuits, not criminal charges – the evidence was nonexistent at best.
You can’t settle a criminal case. You can, however, extort a lot of money out of public figures by having some circumstantial evidence about a socially taboo topic – one where people are guilty until proven innocent.
For those with the means, it’s much cheaper and easier to just pay the accuser off than to drag it into the public spotlight. It happens to all sorts of public figures, not just MJ.
Look @ Kobe, for example.

I may not know the in’s and out’s of the legal system but I do know a fair amount about European- U.S. history. Civil suit is a direct descendent of paying blood guild (wergild). Wergild was a way to take responsibility for an action. Responsibility does not exactly equal guilt (despite some old line theological stances and repeated bellowing over the centuries). In fact one to main reasons to pay wergild was to prevent a prolonged vendetta.
As for the other part I about us disagreeing – off topic I know- I learn quite a bit about ball from when we have disagreed. Sometimes it changes what I think, sometimes it reinforces what I thought when it started. Either way I have only thought well of you for the efforts you took to voice when and how you disagreed with me. If I overly annoy you it is not meant in that spirit. It would be a sad time for me when I don’t see your posts some were.

I’m sorry Dave, because you completely misunderstood what I was saying, and I guess that’s my fault. I wasn’t talking to you specifically, I was speaking in general. I was just saying I didn’t want to get into a drawn out discussion about Michael Jackson’s innocence or guilt, because we’re here to talk about the Giants. I’ve always enjoyed all my discussions with you and everyone else, and if you learned anything from me, it was probably wrong! I learn alot more from you and the others, because you guys do all the research that I’m too lazy to do. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

But paying $20M to settle civil case does NOT keep reputation intact.
Quite the opposite. Believe me: before he & Johnnie Cochran settled the case, they did TONS of focus groups and mock trials to assess how a civil trial might have gone. If they thought they had a good chance of winning, they would have. But the settlement pretty much told the world that MJ/JC thought that a jury would hear all the evidence and go against them.
And I am not sure what you’re suggesting about juries with the comment “people who have no knowledge speculating,” but juries don’t just flip a coin and pull a verdict out of the air. They really do work hard, look at evidence, and if there were no credible evidence, would find that the plaintiff didn’t carry its burden of proof. (I do this stuff for a living. Sometimes juries get it right/wrong on whether the burden of proof was met, but MJ would have gotten benefit of doubt in the first civil trial, and the plaintiff would have had to meet higher than the real burden — preponderance of evidence — in order to get a verdict in their favor.)

sorry about my craptastic writing.
It may not keep the reputation in tact, but wouldn’t you agree that it beats a long, drawn out trial where the public will form its own opinion? That’s also what I meant by “people w/no knowledge.” My whole thing is that his repuation goes to shit in a trial. Perhaps the second time around, they figured “eh if we pay these guys off then that truly is an admission of guilt” and decided to go for the trial. bleh

Grew up listening to Little Mikey and the Jackson 5 – very memorable songs, who can forget a song about a rat :) Morphed into a strange dude, perhaps as a result of his upbringing, but then again Little Stevie Wonder had a similar rise to fame, perhaps without a domineering father – who knows. If he had quit with the makeover after The Wiz he wouldn’t have become such a freak. Obviously a tortured soul – RIP Mike.
