I saw Bocock play at the futures game in SF a couple of years ago.

The future is…not yet!

Meet my new son: Sundrendy Windster, coming soon to a minor league near you.

Sosa was on that team too. Looked good that day

by m34josh on Jun 25, 2009 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah him and Sosa. I was just thinking about the reps the Giants have sent the last few years…last year it was Sandoval and Villalona, the year before Sosa and Bocock. Upgrades for sure.

The 2007 game was a blast to behold live. Saw lots of very talented youngsters. For me, the Futures Game is the best part of the All Star stuff.

I still have the roster list for that game. Here are some of the players from that game: Joba Chamberlain, Matt Garza, Clayton Kershaw, Evan Longoria, Jay Bruce, Jacoby Ellsbury, Colby Rasmus, Justin Upton, Elvis Andrus, Geovany Soto, Joey Votto, Wladimir Balentien.

Geovany Soto uses marijuana. That is definitely a PED. He should be suspended and forced to watch “Reefer Madness” for 50 straight days.

How many times are we gonna see Big V in the Futures Game. I would have liked to have seen Neal. Or Buster.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 25, 2009 10:43 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He’s been a pick twice. It’s not uncommon to have a guy go twice. Elvis Andrus appeared in back to back games recently. Shin-Soo Choo went three times! Beat that!

Plus each team gets one US rep and one world rep, as well as one P and one position player. Right now, MadBum is the top Giants prospect born in the States (and top pitching prospect), and Villalona is the top international prospect. Plus I feel he was sort of shut out of the Cal League All Star game, so this makes up for it.

I dont think thats true

Looking through the list of the world team I didnt see a rep from Oakland or Baltimore (might have been more too, those were just some I looked for)

So I personally would have prefered Posey or Neal, but I definitely dont mind getting to see Angel play.

by kvdp12 on Jun 25, 2009 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s strange.

The reason that Pablo and Villalona went last year was that Schierholtz was the pick for the Giants. He did not end up going, and Pablo went in his place.

Schierholtz didn’t go because he was getting ready for the Olympics no? And why does everyone keep forgetting that Pucetas went to the Futures Game too? Is he the most forgotten guy in the entire Giants system or something?!

by Hobbes2d on Jun 25, 2009 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah the Olympics kept him out of it.

I’m guilty as charged. I kind of cooled off of Pucetas after his meh AFL performance and I wasn’t super high on him to begin with.

I think the rule is that each team gets two regardless of whether they play for the U.S. or World team

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 25, 2009 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not quite right

The rule is that each team must have at least 1 player total, and no more than 2 players max (1 US and 1 World). Since MadBum was picked for the USA that aced out Buster. Check it again and you’ll see that Oakland and Baltimore do have 1 rep each. It’ll be strange if MadBum has to pitch to AnVil – I hope it doesn’t happen.

As I noted below, the A’s, Orioles, and Pirates all have both their reps on the US team, while the Brewers, Mariners, Indians, Yankees, and Mets. The rule is simply 2 reps, doesn’t matter which roster they’re on.

Also, I know its not uncommon to see a guy get picked to go more than once, I just selfishly wish the Giants would have sent Neal or Posey. Would have been nice to see either one of them in a showcase game vs what are a compilation of some of the better prospects in their age group. To see Buster or Neal have an AB against someone like Hector Rondon would be awesome IMO.

I’d love to see Neal go and hit a HR so his value can continue to be inflated

I just think he has become overrated as a prospect based on a half season in a hitter’s league and I’d like to see that helium continue so that the Giants can sell him high

by superk1ng on Jun 25, 2009 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t see how you can say it’s based on a half season’s work. It’s predominantly based on the scouting reports on him out of HS before he got hurt, with his increasingly productive work since recovering from surgery last year and this year raising the specter that those tools are now translating into game skills and productivity. I documented this more fully in the other post, but his work from the time he was an 18 year old in the NWL have been whetting our appetites for this break out. We’re very likely to get some very cheap, very great productivity out of him in the next 6 years or so.

outside of maybe the top 10 or 20 prospects in baseball it is pretty foolish to say that anybody currently playing in A ball is very likely to provide some very cheap, very great productivity out of him in the next 6 years or so, that’s just not how it works with minor league baseball players.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 26, 2009 11:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Quite true. Nonetheless, I’m just gonna sit here being right on this one.

I’m surprised Buster’s not there, but like any All Star team alot of it has to do with logistics of getting representatives on there. The two catchers for the US team are Jason Castro and Tyler Flowers — both coming from really prospect barren systems. Houston’s system is so bad, I can imagine Castro being the very first player inked onto a roster and just building around him.

As soon as they picked MadBum they couldn’t take another American Giant. The rules allow a max of 1 player per major league team per side (USA or World) – so each team can have at most 1 guy playing for the US and 1 for the World. But you’re right. Posey’s numbers are significantly better than Castro’s in the (about) 60 games that he played in the Cal League before being promoted to AA for the last 14 games.

That’s not quite right. They can have two max, but it doesn’t matter which team they’re on. Take a closer look at the rosters and you’ll see that the A’s, Orioles, and Pirates all have both their reps on the US team, while the Brewers, Mariners, Indians, Yankees, and Mets all have two on the World roster.

By the way, if you listen to BA’s Futures Game podcast, they talk extensively about the Giants. In fact, direct quote from John Manual — “the hardest part about putting together this year’s Future’s Game roster was only 2 Giants.” And they go into some depth on why Posey’s not there and Villalona is, which mostly hinged not on the US Catcher situation so much as the World 1B situation. What it came down to is when Yonder Alonso broke his hand, the corner IF situation of the World roster was so thin they felt forced to put Villalona on the World roster, even though Matt Eddy said he would rather have put both Posey and Alderson on the roster than Villalona. Manual said at one point that the Giants could easily have had 5 people on the roster without the various rules constraints. That 5th player is left up our imagination.

No Tim Alderson when all his numbers better than Bumgarner – not right

by SF Fan on Jun 25, 2009 4:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

They’re bringing him up for the actual All Star Game.

by Natto on Jun 25, 2009 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm

So far this year Bumgarner has a combined ERA of 1.79 to Alderson’s 2.93.
Since the promotion to AA it’s Madbum 1.96, Alderson 2.22.

In almost identical IP on the season, here are the two lines:

Bumgarner, 70.1 IP, 55H, 22R, 14ER, 1HR, 16BB, 61K, .215 BAA, 0.72 GO/FO
Alderson 70.2 IP, 71H, 24R, 23ER, 6HR, 10BB, 57K, .257 BAA, 1.07 GO/FO

Quite close across the board (with Alderson’s HR total probably being the most significant difference in terms of their respective ERAs), but I don’t see much of a case for saying all of Alderson’s numbers are better. Tim’s BB, and GO/AO are slightly better, but all other categories fall to Bumgarner’s favor.

Besides HRs, the other glaring difference is Earned Runs – T2 has given up over 60% more than MadBum. Wow, I didn’t realize we’ve been playing really crappy D behind MadBum.
