pure gold
The Giants view Williams as a big-league-ready receiver whose hitting abilities are in question. Sabean said it might be “counterproductive” to promote Williams to Triple-A just to make room for Posey.
Really? You’ve brought guys up from A ball to strike out in SF more than a few times in the last couple years, so I don’t know why he should get any better treatment. Maybe he’d make a good SS!
In seriousness, I’d figure out where Posey should be playing and then worry about finding playing time for the spare parts of tomorrow.

hasn't that been the plan all along?
Pomote him to Fresno after 300 at bats (he has 287 PAs at the moment). It’s odd that this is being treated as some kind of breaking news.

There’ve been rumors that that was the plan, but I don’t know that there’s ever been a public declaration of it.

My sources have said he’s moving to Fresno, but I never heard the 300 at bats figure. I guess the one who wrote the article for MLB Fanhouse is being cautious in saying they’re not sure if he’s going to AA or AAA.

Agreed.
His control has suffered in AA. Besides, he’s 19. I don’t see much point in having him “learn on the job” in the majors. Both because it could hurt a team that’s actually good, and because he could waste alot of his service time being mediocre while he figures thing out that he could have learned in Fresno. Play it conservative.

Exactly
Cain spent a while in Triple-A, and so did Lincecum (although his time was much shorter with Fresno). I don’t care how good Bumgarner is, he needs and deserves to be brought up correctly.

A September call up wouldn’t be a horrible thing, a little motivation for the off season work outs…
by Merope on Jun 23, 2009 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Understanding that there certainly are decent candidates, it’s still worth while pointing out that a September call up for Madbum or Timmy or Buster means somebody else (Bocock?) has to be sent through waivers so there’s room on the 40 man.

The few games I’ve been to this year, the starter has performed really well. I’ve seen Posey gun down some baserunners, and he’s not too bad blocking the ball either. I wouldn’t think he’s really that far off from playing in the majors.
by Hobbes2d on Jun 23, 2009 1:07 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Posey’s smart, plus he was a pitcher himself at a pretty high level.
by Dan from NM on Jun 22, 2009 11:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Gerald Posey should see the great Northeast. Please do not give me the excuse of Jacks Williams being at AA. The Giants can demote Williams to A+ San Jose and promote Gerald Posey to the hitting haven Dodd. C’mon it will be good for him.
Why send Posey from one hitting haven to another hitting haven? The minors should be where he experiences all kinds of pitching, ballparks.

I have no problem with Posey being advanced to AAA. I’ve seen him at SJ in a handful of games, he’s definitely ready for the challenge.
by Hobbes2d on Jun 23, 2009 1:08 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have no problem with him skipping AA at all. If his bat is AAA ready, he should be playing against the higher competition.
I don’t know what you mean by “experience all kinds of pitching.” I can only think you mean “experience the craphole that is Connecticut,” but since that’s not what you said I’m not going to actually put the words in your mouth.
I agree the Jackson Williams line is a smokescreen, and an unnecesary one. Posey is one of the team’s top prospects, and he should be virtually ML ready right now. There’s no real reason for him to have to sit through 200 or whatever AA at bats. Play him against his talent level.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

It saddens me to imagine the organization thinks Jacks DOES have potential with the bat. Oh yeah, and if they can turn Bocock into a .260 hitter he’ll make a lot of money, too.

I hope both make it to AAA this season, but would like their seasons to end there. At their young age, their bodies are still developing and they’ll have thrown plenty of pitches this season. I don’t want to baby them, but the team should be careful with 19 year old arms.

Better not count on it
It’s pretty obvious that they’ll let him play in the All-Star game today (?) and then give him a day or 2 to report to Fresno or Conn. There’s no sense in sending him back to SJ to play 1 or 2 games after the break. San Jose doesn’t start it’s 2nd half until Thursday.

I might normally say send Posey to AA, but a Triple-A move makes sense, if only for a decision on how to handle Molina’s contract year. They need as good an indication if Posey is ready for the bigs, defensively and offensively, and Triple-A is arguably (yes, only arguably) a better place for that, as numbers will be skewed in both places. However, just as important, it’ll be easier for the brass who needs to see it with their own eyes to go to Fresno to see Posey, rather than take at least two days to go to Connecticut and come back. I do know that Sabes and Tidrow do go out to Connecticut, but it’s a lot easier to do on a moment’s notice to go to Fresno.

damn hit Enter too early. My personal preference is to have him catch MadBum and Tim2 for half a season, but AAA is better for his bat.

I’ll reply to your question, just in case you weren’t dishing out a healthy dose of sar-chasm. I don’t buy the Jackson Williams excuse. Why does what happens to a guy destined to be a journeyman back-up catcher make any difference when deciding what’s best for the development of your $6M bonus baby who’s destined to be one of our top players for the next 15 years? If Williams can’t hack it in AAA or AA, send him back to SJ and keep him there until he learns to hit above .250. For the record, I’ve always wanted Buster to go to Conn. next to continue to develop a rapport with MadBum, T2, and Sosa, and to see how he hits in a pitchers park.
