Post-Game Recap: Sweep Sassy Molassy (Giants Sweep the Rangers!)

Wait, so a pitcher who deserved a win and was getting jobbed by a wretched offense got the win after an old player came up with a clutch late-inning hit? Brian Wilson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth without drama? The Giants got a hit against a pitcher named Kevin? Runs, even? Pablo Sandoval had two hits?

Maybe that last one isn't so hard to believe, but the others are. Zito still needs to throw strikes, but he pitched well. The only way that I'd feel better about the sweep is if the Giants deserved to win last night. Nice bounce back from that horrid Angels series, fellas.

now, from the "Dept. of Getting Ahead of Ourselves..."

July’s Schedule:
20/27 games are against sub-500 opponents. (HOU, FLA, SD, PITx2, ATL)
13 of those 20 games are at home.

getting further ahead
August has what could be a nightmare stretch:
PHI, CIN, LAD, CIN, NYM, COL

by sayheybk on Jun 21, 2009 4:31 PM PDT reply actions

The thing about that July schedule is no day off from July 17 tell Aug 6. Starting with 3 in Pitt & 4 in ATL (
Rain , Rain stay away) and capped with 3 in Coors. That is pretty freaking brutal. You hope the Staff gets the arms back together at home with 3 VS Pit then get 4 against the Phillies only to visit the Whiffle Ball Park in Houston for 4. That stretch really has to potentional to gut, torch & destroy the staff.

Then 8 days later go another 25 straight days.

It all depends on the current fortune/momentum of the team we are playing. Colorado will likely fall back to earth by August, and the Mets are so laughably inconsistent that you never know which team they’ll be playing by then

Mr. Merope and I kept marveling at the quietness out of the left field bleachers too. He suggested that maybe it was due to a “Father’s Day crowd” of more casual fans. We didn’t hear “He’s a bum!!!” until late – bottom of the 8th maybe? Hell, some games we’ve been to fans on the 1st base side will do that to pitchers as they are warming up.

I was complaining loudly down in club level. But the guy behind me (who I had thought was a good fan!) and my mom were both chuckling about how much they like the wave.

I have tried to set my mom straight, explain why it’s so irritating that it always seems to happen at the point of the game that it does, but she won’t listen. :(

Kinsler was running on the pitch, I believe, and Renteria dec’d him at 2nd base and he slid in. Winn made the catch and it was a run of the mill throw into 1st base, which bounced once and was an easy play for TI. Kinsler stopped running back to 1st and was easily doubled up.

I’ve been out all day, so I haven’t had a chance to check in, but today was actually my first day at the park this year – with two kids under the age of three, it’s tough to get out. My cousins are visiting from Switzerland, so I took them today.

Of course, I forgot my hat, and the sun was pounding on his from the third inning on, so I’m looking awfully red right now. Ouch.

Otherwise, it was a great game. The Rangers’ only two runs came while I was going to the restroom, so as far as I’m concerned they never happened. The Jones homer was hit just a few rows away from our seats – apparently there was some controversy, but they said unequivocally that the ball was fair.

I never would’ve guessed how well Zito’s outing would go after the first two innings. He had control on his fastball and several balls were hit quite well. He did have a nice curveball going, and that’s all that saved him. Later he started getting strikes on his fastball, and after that he was unhittable. Well, except for Andruw Jones.

The Rangers’ handling on Milwood was Bochyean. They were lucky to escape without further damage – Ishikawa’s foul was smoked. It was really weird that they had Milwood pitched to him – I was sure Guardado was warming out to pitch to him and Lewis.

Whiteside doesn’t look anything like a major league hitter. I wish they’d DFAed him and kept Holm.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that pie > cake, that Bochy is endowed by his creator with certain undeniable traits, that among these are veteran man-love, a gigantic skull, and the pursuit of the double switch.

I know I'm Late

I drove over from Reno for the game yesterday for my first game this year and just got back.

1. The zito no hitter snuck up on me. I looked up in the 5th and was like “really? a no hitter?” in my mind.

2. I thought Ishikawa had some good at bats in the game. He shouldn’t be batting 5th, but definitely should be playing everyday right now.

3. I still hate Andruw Jones

4. I like it when good wilson shows up. he was pounding the strike zone, it was nice.

5. Before the game during warmups, It seemed to me that we might have a starting OF of Lewis, Rowand and Schierholtz. It didn’t happen, but at some point that would be nice to see.

Finally, During the starting lineups, my mom (who hasn’t been to a game since the candlestick days) said on zito “Is that the pitcher? he’s the best looking of all of them, much better than whiteside, he’s ugly”

Great game, worth the trip.

Brand new adoptive daddy for the Big Unit. Congrats go out to my son for his 300th win. Only 211 more wins until he catches Cy Young!
