Mock Draft Contest!
So, I like tedious but fun but pointless but brag-worthy stuff. That's why I like Mock Drafts. So, why not share that with everyone? So let's start the first ever McCovey Chronicles MLB Mock Draft contest! (unless it's not the first...)
The rules are simple: Post the way you think that the first round will go. After the draft, we'll take a look and see who has the best prognosticating skills....or whomever should've bought a lottery ticket instead.
Scoring, I propose, should go this way:
Picks 1-10: 1 point each
Picks 11-20: 2 points each
Picks 21-32: 3 points each
Bonus: Giants 2nd Round Pick (#55): 5 points
Bonus: Giants 3rd Round Pick (#86): 5 points
I am certainly open to any suggestions on tweaking the rules. Posts should be done before the end of Monday next week, but if people are willing to allow posts up to the minute before the draft, I'm not picky.
Prize? Snarky bragging rights. Sorry, I have no funds for sponsoring something yet. But if this goes well...next year I'll see about getting a signed ball or something.
Have fun, guys and girls!
Here's some help, if you'd like: A database of mock drafts from smaller sites; The latest Keith Law Mock Draft(Subscriber Content); Baseball America's Version 2 Mock (Subscriber Content).

Good call on Mendonca
That’s one that has me going. I could go either way between Mendonca and Kobernus. I went with the latter simply because I think someone will grab Mendonca before the third round.
That said, I could see it being the Giants in the second round.

Here goes....
Kevin, you must be the brother I never had; I love this stuff. Sure, it’s frivolous. But I just spent the most enjoyable hour at work that I’ve had in a long time. Thanks!
Biggest surprise: Grant Green falling to the supplemental round.
1 – Washington: Stephen Strasburg, SP
2 – Seattle: Dustin Ackley, OF
3 – San Diego: Mike Minor, SP (I think their budget will be a factor)
4 – Pittsburgh: Aaron Crow, SP (if they’re smart)
5 – Baltimore: Kyle Gibson, SP
6 – San Francisco: Shelby Miller, SP (just to be different; likely is Matzek)
7 – Atlanta: Zach Wheeler, SP
8 – Cincinnati: Alex White, SP
9 – Detroit: Donovan Tate, OF (exactly the kind of player the Tigers draft)
10 – Washington: Mike Leake, SP (hoping to save some money)
11 – Colorado: Tyler Matzek, SP
12 – Kansas City: Jacob Turner, SP (home state kid)
13 – Oakland: Tim Wheeler, OF (Jemile, part deux)
14 – Texas: Matthew Purke, SP
15 – Cleveland: Tanner Scheppers, SP
16 – Arizona: Rex Brothers, RP
17 – Arizona: Bobby Borchering, 3B
18 – Florida: Drew Storen, SP
19 – St. Louis: Garrett Gould, SP
20 – Toronto: Chad James, SP
21 – Houston: Matt Hobgood, SP
22 – Minnesota: Eric Arnett, SP (thrilled to get him here)
23 – Chicago (AL): Everett Williams, OF (talented middle-of-field defender)
24 – Los Angeles (AL): Max Stassi, C
25 – Los Angeles (AL): Tyler Skaggs, SP (too close to pass up)
26 – Milwaukee: Kyle Heckathorn, SP (need pitching)
27 – Seattle: Jared Mitchell, OF (4 of the top 51 picks; good risk here)
28 – Boston: Tony Sanchez, C
29 – New York (AL): Mike Trout, OF
30 – Tampa Bay: Wil Myers, C
31 – Chicago (NL): A. J. Pollock, 2b/OF
32 – Colorado: Luke Bailey, C

Wow
The Nationals win the draft. The signing of Strasburg and Leake immediately makes the Nats rotation very good. Both pitchers could be in the rotation by 2010. Do it, Rizzo!

Strasburg could be in the rotation in August of this year.
by SFGuy on Jun 4, 2009 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not sure
The belief is that he signs at the stroke of midnight Aug 15th and by then he has not pitched in a couple of months. Could see a couple of innings in relief in September.
I know agent Boras tossed out the number of $50M and the Nats could agree with that figure if Boras is willing to accept incentives in the deal. Say the Nats offer $18M and then the other monies are based on Cy Young award standing. If come in 10th x dollars, if 5th y dollars if wins the award then z dollars.
by wilriv21 on Jun 4, 2009 10:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Boras knows that the Nats need Strasburg more then Strasburg needs the Nats. He’ll get closer to $50 million than not.

I would LOVE if the Giants had these 3 first picks with Miller or Matzek, Fuentes and Dominguez. But it sounds like Fuentes has worked his way into the mid to late first round. So I doubt we’d have any shot at getting him.
by Hobbes2d on Jun 3, 2009 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I haven’t heard that. If Fuentes were available at #55, I think he’d be a terrific fit for our organization. Baseball America ranks him as the 54th best prospect, and I was hoping they might be close in their assessment and we’d get a shot at him. Of course, the draft is a total crapshoot; and with 30 different organizations trying to define “art” or “beauty,” and outsider trying to predict what 30 strangers would judge as “art” is far more than wildly speculative. And so fun.

The nerve of this guy, messing up the entire projection. This is now a time of agonizing reappraisal.
1 – Washington: Stephen Strasburg, SP
2 – Seattle: Dustin Ackley, OF
3 – San Diego: Mike Minor, SP (I think Tate or Minor; & they go safe with Minor)
4 – Pittsburgh: Aaron Crow, SP
5 – Baltimore: Alex White, SP (this is where the whole first round hinges)
6 – San Francisco: Tyler Matzek, SP (I wanted to pick Shelby Miller again, but wimped out)

The Pads budget is always a factor. If they didn’t have to take a player with a certain greatness quality attached somewhere thanks to the commissioner’s office, they’d go lower on the dollar quantity.
There’s always a chance they try to move into a higher prospect tax bracket, but that would be the equivalent of Corky Thatcher being at the last table in the World Series of Poker.
It's always Noonan somewhere.

Thank you. Agree that Seattle GM “Z” might go a different direction since Ackley is a different player than the usual GM “Z” top drafted prospects, GM “Z” normally likes to draft big boppers early. Got to think that SD then grabs Ackley at #3 if he is available
by wilriv21 on Jun 3, 2009 11:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i can dream right. Ackley is awesome and could hit quite a few doubles and triples out in old pac bell park
However I more expect Matzek or Scheppers at 6 for the Giants and Ackley at 2 to the Mariners

I know exactly what you mean. He could end up anywhere quite literally. That’s how I was with Grant Green. As to your question below, I’d say go for it – change as needed and post at the bottom with an indication that “this” is your latest and greatest. imho.

Are we going to have a deadline? The closer it gets to draft day, the more accurate the mocks should get.
I already regret putting Gibson fourth. Sounds like he’s going to fall quite a bit because of the diminished velocity.

Perhaps but maybe not. There’s whispers Ackley might not be taken by Seattle too, that they’ll take Matzek or another pitcher.

Mayo's latest mock
Not many surprises. The first six:
1. Strasburg
2. Ackley
3. Mike Minor
4. Aaron Crow
5. Zack Wheeler
6. (Giants) Tyler Matzek.
Tate doesn’t make the first round in this one. Grant Green is going #19 to the Cards. The highest position player past Ackley is at #16 with A.J. Pollock going to the Diamondbacks. That is saying something about the status of position players in this draft. (Tim Wheeler is at 31 in this mock).

Kyle Gibson Update
Missouri righthander Kyle Gibson, the No. 4 prospect on BA’s Top 200 Draft Prospects list, has a stress fracture in his right forearm and will be shut down for six weeks. This obviously will affect him in Tuesday’s draft, when he was projected to go in the top half of the first round.
Gibson last pitched on May 30 against Monmouth in the NCAA regionals. Though he pitched eight shutout innings for the victory, his fastball sat at 83-86 mph. After the game he spoke of having forearm tightness, which often is a precursor to torn elbow ligaments and Tommy John surgery.
The recovery time for the stress fracture should be much quicker than it would have been for reconstructive elbow surgery. Gibson should be able to throw for the team that drafts him before the Aug. 15 signing deadline.

Possible rule change proposal?
I had Gibson dropping anyway, so I’ll stand by my pick, but anyone who submits their draft projections after this news is at a major advantage. Since my kids are always changing the rules of their games midstream, I’d like to propose a slight change to the rules.
Anyone who turned in their projections early gets a little “extra credit.”
How about 0 bonus points for an entry on Saturday through Tuesday

That was a lot of fun
even though I totally screwed up after the first two picks. Actually I’m glad the Giants didn’t pick Scheppers as I had thought (maybe he really isn’t as healthy as some reports have him) and I’m also pleasantly surprised the Giants didn’t go the speed and defense route early (hence my picks of Kipnis and Jackson).
Thanks, Brute, for getting this contest going, and looking forward to trying to regain some of my self esteem with next year’s Mock Draft Contest.
