But if they win the next two against a certain NL team then all will be fine.

The only little thing that did not go completely right tonight was the STL Cardinals won so we were not able to pick up a game in the WC.

Over all though, it was a great day. Good way to stop the bleeding after the sweep.

The Cards are like the annoying toy poodle or terrier in the neighbor while growing up.

It usually as slipped its’ leash and while running free it hides behind, trash cans, bushes, tires and what not to race out and get under your feet will trying to nip your heels. This usually happens while you have your hands full with something else too important to be able to use it to teach the rat-dog a lesson with. That is role of the Cardinals in a Giants fan universe for the last 30 years or so. Thus is has been and thus is will be.

thanks for reminding me how the idiot Bochy tried to give the game away. How simple is it to know you have three reliable relievers, so assuming they’re well rested, (and they were) you use one for the seventh, one for the eighth, and one for the ninth. I almost fell off my couch when they returned from break for the seventh and I saw Merkin on the mound.

How was Romo awarded the win when Medders was the last pitcher to pitch when the Giants took the lead?

by deuce deuce on Jun 20, 2009 2:58 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Learn something new everyday…

Official Rules: 10.00 The Official Scorer

(b) If the pitcher whose team assumes a lead while such pitcher is in the game, or during the inning on offense in which such pitcher is removed from the game, and does not relinquish such lead, is a starting pitcher who has not completed
(1) five innings of a game that lasts six or more innings on defense, or
(2) four innings of a game that lasts five innings on defense, then the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the relief pitcher, if there is only one relief pitcher, or the relief pitcher who, in the official scorer’s judgment was the most effective, if there is more than one relief pitcher.
Rule 10.17(b) Comment: It is the intent of Rule 10.17(b) that a relief pitcher pitch at least one complete inning or pitch when a crucial out is made, within the context of the game (including the score), in order to be credited as the winning pitcher. If the first relief pitcher pitches effectively, the official scorer should not presumptively credit that pitcher with the win, because the rule requires that the win be credited to the pitcher who was the most effective, and a subsequent relief pitcher may have been most effective. The official scorer, in determining which relief pitcher was the most effective, should consider the number of runs, earned runs and base runners given up by each relief pitcher and the context of the game at the time of each relief pitcher’s appearance. If two or more relief pitchers were similarly effective, the official scorer should give the presumption to the earlier pitcher as the winning pitcher.
(c ) The official scorer shall not credit as the winning pitcher a relief pitcher who is ineffective in a brief appearance, when at least one succeeding relief pitcher pitches effectively in helping his team maintain its lead. In such a case, the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the succeeding relief pitcher who was most effective, in the judgment of the official scorer.
Rule 10.17© Comment: The official scorer generally should, but is not required to, consider the appearance of a relief pitcher to be ineffective and brief if such relief pitcher pitches less than one inning and allows two or more earned runs to score (even if such runs are charged to a previous pitcher). Rule 10.17(b) Comment provides guidance on choosing the winning pitcher from among several succeeding relief pitchers.

Aside from the first pitch that Medders threw down the dick to Byrd, the ‘pen did an awesome job. Romo and Afeldt were lights out. Is there a better 1-2 punch late in the game than those two? I can’t think of any.

Great to see Fred do some yardwork tonight. That makes it easier to keep the picture of him I have on the wall of my cubicle(well, we also share the same last name, so i’d keep it up there anyways). It’s been hard to defend him recently at work to the bum fans.

One thing I still can’t get over is why does Bochy not bat Pablo higher in the lineup? I just don’t get it. Maybe it would do Randy some good to hit lower for a while until he starts hitting again, and get as many ABs for Pablo as possible. To me, baseball has a lot to do with momentum, and if Pablo was hitting 3rd we would probably have a better chance of scoring in the first. Giving the SP a lead from the get go does a ton for their psyche, especially for mental-midgets like Sanchez and (sometimes) Zito. I know Rowand went yard in the first last night, but I am just talking about in general.

I think it is getting deep enough into the season Big Head really has to start inventing excuses to keep Molinia in the #4 spot; especially if Panda is hitting behind him. I can understand the not wanting to move Rowand out of the led off spot (though I disagree) but I see no logical reason to be hitting the Almost Moving Mountain in front of Panda. There are fewer reasons to think Sandoval couldn’t do just as well in the #3, or #4 spot.

Wasn’t the P spot in the order leading off the next inning? I think Downs made the last out in the previous inning. Only had 9 outs left and didn’t want to waste one on a pitcher. But yeah, they could have just waited until after Medders pitched the 7th or got pulled and do the double switch mid-inning.

Yeah, but you can pinch hit. He didn’t keep the relievers in for more than a single inning (and I doubt he was planning to do so w/ Merkin), so there’s no point in doing a double switch.

Still doesn’t work. If Bochy really thought that the differnce between Torres’s glove and Fred’s glove is bigger than the difference between Fred’s bat and Torres’s bat, then Torres would be starting every game. Switching them mid-game makes no sense.

Does Lewis have wall phobia?

The play where he got to the fly ball in foul ground and it hit off his glove. The only thing I could think of was he was worried about smacking into the wall and stopped short.

Or if anyone has seen a play where he has made a catch and banged off the wall, then I would stand corrected.

Big question from this game

What the hell was Molina doing in the game after his leadoff double? At that point it looked like our best chance to get the tying run home, we have an actual backup catcher on the roster, a full bench, and the slowest runner in the history of MLB on 2nd.

I asked about this last year

and was told that if the backup guy was hurt, it wouldn’t pay off. That did happen once when we had Feliz, and he had to catch the ninth. Frandsen is at Fresno, and is our emergency catcher, so it could pose a problem.

I’m pretty sure Sandoval is our third catcher, and we also have Torres, who is the current emergency catcher. Add Whiteside to that, and any possible injury causing crazy catching shenanigans really wasn’t a concern.

How weird, I knew about Whiteside and forgot about Pablo. Although hadn’t heard that about Torres.

Torres was pegged our emergency catcher after we started the season with only Molina and Sandoval.
