This may be 20/20 hindsight, and isn’t the reason we’re probably going to lose this game, but even at only 83 pitches, would it have killed Bochy to have someone in the bullpen ready to go in the top of the 8th in case Timmy got in trouble against a good-hitting team?

Yeah, pretty close.

I looked them up and posted them more out of curiosity than to prove a point.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that pie > cake, that Bochy is endowed by his creator with certain undeniable traits, that among these are veteran man-love, a gigantic skull, and the pursuit of the double switch.

to add

yeah he was probably a little below average last year, but he’s also been above average this year, so, overall, about average. And in any case, not even close to the biggest problem on this team (FRED LUIS!!!!!!)

it's still too early to say either way

sample size is so small it can fluctuate pretty quickly

what?

It’s too early to say he’s been above average this year? While he may not finish the year above average, he certainly has been above average so far.

i mean his defense

From my understanding, defensive metrics are not reliable on a small sample size

No matter what the Giants record is

I can never get excited about this team as long as Bruce Bochy is the manager. Fail is always inevitable with Rockskull at the helm.

The worst part of this game is it brings to the forefront that we have another 11/2 years of Renteria at short. I don’t even want him for the rest of this year. Another dreaded Sabean contract we can’t wait to end.

As a field manager, Bochy isn’t great, but did we think Alou was? Dusty? No. Not at all.

The problem with Bochy, IMHO, is with his extreme veteran fetish.

I always had a soft spot for Alou, but he was passed his expiration date by the time he was our manager. I have no evidence to support this, but I always thought he did a better job when he was with Les Expos.

What do you expect from this team?

These guys are pitching well, the bullpen’s been solid, and the offense is a turd, which as you might know is unpolishable.

Even with this awful series, their record is about as good as you could reasonably expect.

With Bochy it’s not so because he fails through sheer force of will to motivate his players, as some people seem to think the manager should do.

It’s really that he makes dumb roster moves. All vets – automatic that Renteria, Molina, etc are going to be in the game without question and without days off. Molina really needs to get more off days. And he buries the young players.

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jun 17, 2009 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep, exactly. If Bochy had a better idea when to use guys, and when not to use them, the team would have another win or two under their belts. One or two wins over a year could be a big deal.

I have no idea how, or if, Bochy relates to the players, but I have a suspicion that if I asked the Ishikawas, Lewises and Schierholzes on the squad, I wouldn’t get rave reviews.

No, really, I have updated my blog this year: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball

He was really out of touch and wouldn’t even talk to the players.

What irked me was that he was a destroyer of arms. Jim Brower could still be pitching now if not for Alou.

Craig for the split finger, Baker for pitch counts, Alou for crazy bullpen management, Bochy for pitch counts.

I remember. Craig also wasn’t too worried about pitch counts, but in that at least he wasn’t abnormal for his time.

Dusty isn’t exactly the brightest bulb in the dugout, but even he could outfox Bochy.

At least Dusty had a good, motivating relationship with the players.

Again, I’m not a big Dusty fan, but I did like the way he would sit slumping guys next to him in the dugout for a couple games, especially young players. He also made a point of using his roster and not burying guys on the bench for two weeks until blowouts.

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jun 17, 2009 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep. Dusty is a good leader of men, and a good manager of people. His accomplishments are quite underrated by statistically inclined fans, I think.

Which was Alou’s problem as well. Dusty’s too, to a lesser extent.

Why oh why is this my favorite team?
