Around the Leagues, or is Ben Zobrist for Real?
This is a post to discuss happenings around baseball that aren’t Giants-specific and don’t include those two teams from back east if you can avoid it. So offer up your interesting stats, a player that has caught you by surprise, the under/over-performance of a team, or the fact that Kevin Frandsen must have had sex with Brian Sabean’s wife in an uncomfortable place (the backseat of a Volkswagen).
I will start:
If memory serves me, a batter is required to have 3.1 PA’s per game played by his team to qualify for the various batting metrics. Ben Zobrist is right on the cusp of qualification, and within a few days will be qualifying now that he is starting every game (why was he not starting every game?). A little perspective: as of this afternoon, Zobrist has 203 PA, so while we are still looking at small sample size, he has about a third of the plate appearances he will end up with by the end of the year. Right now he would be leading the majors in wOBA, second to Albert Pujols in SLG, fifth in OBP, tied for first in ISO with Pujols, and is playing solid defense according to current UZR numbers (yes, SSS disclaimer heard). Bottom line is the guy is hitting the crap out of the ball, and while I realized he was playing well, I didn’t realize he was playing Pujols-well.
I know there was a Zobrist-centered post a couple of weeks ago, but hopefully this branches into a discussion about other baseball happenings as well. Now that I have jinxed him, it’s your turn…

johnny cueto leads the national league in ERA – that team might be real dangerous soon.
ted lilly, superstar pitcher.
ibanez, of course, is tearing it up in philly.
shane victorino, superstar game-changer.
russell branyan, finally using his paul bunyan-like strength.
Dodgers fans eat their young.

Already looking forward to their visit this year- I know Volquez has been on and off, but it would be cool to see him and Cueto against Lincecum and Cain. Unfortunately their offense may be a wee bit better…
Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti. "I treat Timmy differently from most pitchers: I leave him alone."

Adam Jones in Baltimore is impressing me. And, despite a recent slump, I’m enjoying Nick Markakis as he helps my fantasy team.
I’m surprised Ryan Franklin is doing as well as he is as the StLouis closer.
Joe Mauer is phenomenal. Here’s hoping Gerald Posey becomes the NL version of Mauer.
Sergio Romo: striking out professional hitters since 2005. And winner of the 2012 NL Fireman of the Year Award!

I don’t like either of them. Mauer isn’t going to develop power, just like Posey isn’t.

Just like you…. didn’t….. develop power?
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all
If Dustin Pedroia played in Seattle, not many people would be talking about him.

Ben Zobrist is on my fantasy team – therefore, he’s for real.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that pie > cake, that Bochy is endowed by his creator with certain undeniable traits, that among these are veteran man-love, a gigantic skull, and the pursuit of the double switch.
Adopted Giant: Fred Lewis, who can still draw a walk.

I shudder to think what went wrong in the rest of your draft.
Proud father of Barry Zito. As long as he keeps throwing strikes, that is.

I picked Josh Hamilton in the first round – what could possibly go wrong with that? I’m attempting to tread water.

I dont even know!! Its a H2H keeper league and I’ve got Mauer, Youkilis, Hill, Longoria, Zobrist, Cruz, Bruce, Rios and Panda as my starting lineup with Timmy, Sabathia, Bedard, Edwin Jackson, Aardsma and Frank Francisco anchoring my pitching staff……. I feel like I should be running away with first place, but I keep getting horrible matchups every single week. God must be punishing me for picking up Juan Pierre and trading my entire bench for Manny the day the steroid story broke. ….because God has obviously expanded his areas of interest, he starting caring a about who won real sporting events in the 90s right around the time all players started thanking him publicly, and now he monitors my fantasy sports efforts carefully.

I have Mauer too. Also Colby Rasmus, who’s having a great June, and I traded for Cain a while back. Also have Lincecum
In a 14-team league, my team’s gone from 9th or 10th place to 3rd place. It’s been fun!

I meant to say it’s gone from 9th/10th to 3rd in the span of about three weeks. Whee!

If I had known that Cain finally learned how to win, I would have hung unto home.
