Replacing Sanchez with Salder is hilarious.

really, though, can he be much worse?

Anyone know how Martinez is progressing? I’d really like to see him back soon.

Answer: yes.

Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.

Not really

Prefer Sanchez be successful

by wilriv21 on Jun 17, 2009 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

One thing we must remember with Sadler is that he has pitched reliever innings the last few seasons topping out at 77 innings last season. This season the organization returned Sadler to a starting pitcher and he has already pitched 48 innings. He currently has shoulder tendinitis. How many innings is he likely to give the Giants this season?

Yeah it may be better to consider another pitcher,

The last few weeks of Sanchez have made me sadler than I was before.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

by howtheyscored on Jun 17, 2009 11:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh yes

Sadler can be way worse. Sanchez can still blow away AAA hitters far better than Sadler can. He’s still striking out a hitter per inning but getting some bad luck in the hits department (.333 BABIP on 16% LD) and walking a bit more than usual (6 per 9 as against 4.5). Ultimately he’s still too dependent on his fastball which is mostly the Giants brass fault for bringing him up too soon and jerking him around.

I am now officially removing my rose-colored glasses when I view Jonathan Sanchez. Sheesh, what is this guy doing in our rotation? Waiter, I’ll have a Pucetas to go, please.

What about

the 25 man? If they push Sanchez to the bullpen and bring up Joe Pitcher from the Lap of Luxury, who goes down to allow this to come to pass?

Your choices on the 40 man, incidentally, are: English, Hinshaw, Joaquin, Matos, Sadler, and Sosa.

I don’t see a logical spot starter in the bullpen- Miller was a starter 5 years ago but I imagine that’s like saying Uribe is a SS. Affeldt started a few in 2006 but I can’t imagine that would seem like a good idea, even to GINAS BRATZ11!!! Merkin? I don’t recall him pitching more than a couple innings this year.

I don’t see an immediate answer unless this also involves 1) dumping Richie or 2) trading Sanchez for some new, fresh mediocrity to replace an old, stale mediocrity on the current roster.

by natteringnabob on Jun 17, 2009 4:26 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

my guess is that one of those guys on the 40 man gets called up to start (I’ll bet on English) and Medders gets sent to Fresno, I don’t want to see any of those current bullpen guys starting.

Really? He’s got an option left?

It shows you that Bochy has absolutely nothing to do with any decisions about Giants’ personnel. Last night he said they haven’t discussed removing Sanchez from the rotation, and the next day Sanchez is out. Why not get Madbum or Tim Alderson up here? I don’t think Rick Porcello is suffering from being in the majors at such a young age.

even though what you’re saying is correct, it also doesn’t mean that Porcello is the only exception. What makes you think that Porcello is so much more advanced and mature than Bumgarner or Alderson are? You certainly can’t get that from their minor league stats last year.

Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!

by rxmeister on Jun 18, 2009 4:57 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Give him the boot!

PLEASE! Get Sanchez out! The dude was serving them up for the Angels last night. It was absolutely terrible. Anyone who says the Giants are overachieving this season are ignorant. These guys can play! But we need to make some mid-season adjustments. Removing Sanchez is one of them… but Billy Sadler? Give me a break… between Bochy and Sabean, this team is run by idiots.

He hits it high.... Touchdown Bears!

by NateisGreat on Jun 17, 2009 7:02 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually it's ignorant to suggest they're not overachieving

The Giants have been the luckiest (or best clutch-hitting, whatever you want to call it) team in baseball. Everything about this team screams regression to the mean.

After all is said and done the Giants are going to finish close to .500 with the best pitching and the worst offense in the national league.

Letting short-term needs dictate player development is one of the things that landed the Giants in this mess that they are almost out of. Letting the players develop correctly, especially making sure pitchers have their off speed stuff mastered before they get to the bigs, is crucial to the next great Giants team.

by Change Up on Jun 17, 2009 7:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It sure doesn’t seem like the Giants are very lucky.

by Natto on Jun 17, 2009 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Giants are overachieving this year. And I believe the word is spelled ign’nt.

Ignorance is in the eye of the beholder

I never said anything about the young pitchers coming up. Would I love to see Bum or Alderson in the bigs? Yes, but I’m not stupid. I do believe there are better options than Sadler though. How about Kevin Pucetas, who is outpitching him on the same team? I choose to believe this team isn’t overachieving. They are a major league club, and they have talent.

Oh, you thought we were committing to a youth movement? What Sabean actually said was it's a "Ute" movement.

According to Fangraphs the Giants have been the best clutch hitting team in baseball. Since it’s generally well established that clutchy performance is generally a function of luck and over time averages out it stands to reason that the Giants are actually putting up more runs than their offense can be expected to put up at least as long as they maintain a 691 OPS.

In addition Giants pitchers are putting up a much lower ERA than would be expected by their peripherals, generally attributable to the league’s leading left on base percentage.

What this all means is that we are looking at one hell of an overachieving team pitchers and hitters alike. the gmen could stay lucky all season but it’s unlikely.

I’m actually glad the Angels swept the Giants and gave us a dose of reality. We’re much closer to being a good team — the foundation for a World Series contender is there — but we’re not that good yet.
