New Blog: RSL Soapbox for Real Salt Lake Fans!

As a continuation of this previous fanshot, I thought it was time for an update now that Mrs. Goofus, Goofus Jr and I have completed the first two weeks. I'm also eager to hear how it's going for mjosh34 and redhornet and anyone else doing the program.

My main reason for taking up P90X was to improve my conditioning after a ski crash and left me pre inactive for about two months. I was also hoping to improve my core strength, tighten my mid-section and increase my flexibility. So far, I think the program will end up improving all these areas for me.

The 90-day program consists of varied daily workouts and a nutrition program (diet and supplements). They are divided into three blocks of about 1 month each.

Workouts
For the first three weeks of the program, you do a different workout each day of the week:
* Day 1 - Chest & Back, Ab Ripper X - This is about an hour of warm-up/stetch, lots of push-ups, pull-ups and a few other exercises, followed by a cool down/stretch. It was hard the first time through because you're supposed to pace yourself, yet work real hard. The second time through in week 2 was much easier to concentrate on the work and not wonder whether I was capable of finishing. The 15-minute Ab Ripper X routine is really hard! The routine requires hip and leg flexibility that I'm lacking. Most of the sets are 25 reps and I often find myself doing 15 reps, resting for 5, than completing the final five.
* Day 2 Plyometrics - This is a high-impact, hardcore aerobic workout that consists of a lot of jumping. I love it as this will really help my volleyball game and it mixes in fun imaginary sports activities (pitching, jump shots, etc.). According to my heart-rate monitor, this routine is burning about 1,000 calories each time. Wow!
* Day 3: Arms & Shoulders, Ab Ripper X - This one really concentrates on shoulders, triceps and biceps and is mostly dumbbells work, followed by Ab Ripper X. (ugh)
* Day 4 Yoga X - I've never done yoga in my life and had no idea how hard it would be. Mrs. Goofus has done lots of yoga and said this was the hardest she'd ever done. At 1.5 hours, it's really long. The first half is strength stuff and the second half is balance stuff. Mjosh34 said he tends to skip this one. I'm sticking with it since I really want to improve my flexibility.
* Day 5 - Legs & Back, Ab Ripper X The leg work is a lot of squats and raises and the back work is pull-ups. Then you get the fun of Ab Ripper X!
* Day 6 - Kenpo X This is a fun cardio routine based on martial arts. (I'll be able to kick ass and look good doing it!) My heart-rate monitor said this burned 850 calories.
* Day 7 Rest or Stretch X The optional 1-hour stretch routine is kind of a toned-down yoga routine. I did it the first week, but skipped it today since I'm recovering from surgery yesterday.

I'll do one more week of this, then end "Block 1" with recovery week, which is mostly yoga and cardio stuff. I've really enjoyed the first two weeks even though I was sore and first and have lived with a certain amount of muscle fatigue the entire time. Block 2 will add some new work and I'm thinking of doing "doubles" and adding cardio to the strength days.

Nutrition
We've been sticking to the suggested general plan where we eat certain portions of proteins, carbs, dairy, fruits, veggies, etc. The hard part for me is limiting myself to just one carb and one fruit per day, but I've been able to do it. In block 2, it goes up to 3 carbs a day.

We didn't buy any of they're nutrients or supplements. We're taking Safeway performance vitamins, Accelerade recovery drink, Clif Builder's Bars and Whey protein drinks. This is saving us a lot of money.

After two weeks, I've dropped two percentage points of body fat, my flexibility has improved and my strength performance improved from week 1 to week 2. So far, it's going well.

Good for you! Keep with it. I was going to start an exercise program for the summer, since with a “traditional schedule” I now have 2 months “off” then I got whacked in the arch [of my foot] playing indoor soccer on Sunday and I can barely walk! Maybe I’ll get started next week…

Good luck!

Fallen Off the Wagon

I’ve been out of town on vacation for 10+ days so I have put p90x on pause. My debate now is where to jump back in. I am thinking one week of block 1 exercises just to get back in the routine, then start block 2 all over again. Maybe I should just all over again, hell I don’t know. I’ll decide on Monday :-)

Keep up the good work! I too am about as flexible as titanium, so I feel your pain on Ab-x

I meant to add...

This program requires a lot of sticktoitiveness. It’s much easier to do with someone else to stay motivated. Mrs. Goofus and I have been dragging each other out of bed each weekday morning at 5am to do our workout.

here is my update:
  • Day 1 – Chest & Back, Ab Ripper X – this is the first one??? this dvd was goddamn insane. i was the only one of my 5 friends doing the program to not hurl afterward, and that’s because i hate throwing up so much my body just won’t do it. i swore off this stupid program after this day.

but the next day i felt my body recovering and it felt great. i also realized newbies aren’t exactly supposed to do the same weight and number of reps as the pros in the video. so…

  • Day 2 Plyometrics – this is the second one??? jumping up and down like a mad man, staring at that taunting little timer that seemed to just go slower and the torture continued. after this one i swore off the program.

but, once again, i felt great the next day. so…

  • Day 3: Arms & Shoulders, Ab Ripper X – this one actually wasn’t so bad. i bought some of the tension bands and had to use them (i tried the first three sets with my 25# weights and that just wasn’t happening). the bands are nice and adjustable, and i started to get the whole idea of not letting my ego get in the way and just doing what my body limited me to. i kind of liked this one.
  • Day 4 Yoga X – all of my friends ended up four days ahead of me because i left town for a long weekend, and when i got back they said skip the yoga. since i’m supplementing this program with two pilates lessons a week i figured i could. i skipped this and just moved all of the subsequent ones up a day.
  • Day 5 – Legs & Back, Ab Ripper X – i actually couldn’t find the disc (i think my roommate was burning it for his girlfriend) so i switched it up with kenpo. i’ll do this one tomorrow.
  • Day 6 – Kenpo X – did this one this morning. this felt AWESOME… just kicking and punching like jeff kent was in front of me with that ridiculous smirk. lots of fun, i can see doing this long after the program ends. i actually got up kinda late this morning to start (6.15am) so i left for work with 20 minutes left.. i figure i’ll get home tonight, do the stretching, and finish it up.
  • Day 7 Rest or Stretch X – uh, my sorry ass is going to rest. actually, since i want to keep getting up early i might just jog a few miles.

i’ve been doing my best to eat healthy, skimming over the nutrition program and just being sensible. yesterday was a good example of an average daily intake: eggs, turkey sausage, and o.j. for breakfast, a nectarine and apple for mid-morning snack, chicken and vegetables for lunch, tilapia and a small avacado for dinner. i also drink about 150 oz of water each day (i’ve been doing that for years) and avoid pre-packaged foods, caffeine, sugar and (god help me) beer.

Goofus, i’m crazy proud of how dedicated you are to the program. i know i’m starting to see results and i can’t hold a candle to how by-the-books your approach is. i’m getting more disciplined each day and like the feeling i have all day from the soreness.

m34josh, i say start wherever you feel comfortable to get back into it. i think it would be awesome to see how we each do as the summer progresses and keep each other motivated.

and if anyone else is thinking about doing the program go for it! it’s scary at first but your body can adjust to it and you’ll actually start to look forward to it.

and remember, if barry freakin’ zito can do it, we can do it.

Thanks, but sticking with it “by-the-books” is the only way I can do this. If I give myself an inch of slack, I’ll take a mile. Today (chest and back, Ab Ripper X) was really hard. I had pretty invasive surgery to remove some skin cancer Tuesday and have 9 stitches in my forehead. The first couple reps were easy, but when I’d start to really push, the strain made it feel like my stitches were going to pop open, so I backed off a little bit. Even still, I was able to better some of my numbers from just two weeks ago.

Way to go yourself! Glad you’re enjoying it. I’ll keep posting these Fanshots every couple of weeks, so we can all check in and keep each other motivated.

What equipment do you need?

A 50lb medicine ball and a thigh master.

by xanthan on Jun 17, 2009 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i’m just doing it in my living room. you basically need household items (chair, towel), some free weights (i have 25# dumbbells that are way too heavy) OR some tensions bands (i got them for about $20 at a sporting goods store), a pull up bar (got that “as seen on TV” one at bed, bath and beyond with the 20%off coupon, ended up being about $28) and the dvds.

most of the time you want to have a towel handy for sweat and another to lay on the ground in case you have hardwood floors and don’t want to keep dropping to your knees and hurting them.

take it up and keep up with us here this summer… the more people that try it is just more support and motivation to keep it going.

We have dumb bells of 5#, 10#, 15#, #20, #25 lbs. Hornet’s right; 25# is way too heavy for a lot the exercises. You could go with adjustable dumb bells, but it would be hard to change the weights and keep up with DVD.

We also have mats for the yoga and ab stuff since we have hardwood floors in our living room.

The iron gym pull up bar works great.

I’ve had wrist injuries in the past, so also use those floor push up bars.

I have a small place so I got the bowflex adjustable dumbbells, a pullup bar off ebay, and a mat from Target. The bowflex were ridiculously expensive but they work really well for something like this and my limited amount of space. They go from 5-52.5 pounds each, and I use them as my push up bars too

Stupid question but when you say one carb a day, you can’t mean like one gram right? I guess that is a stupid question since one piece of fruit, like an apple, has like 20-30 grams but what do you mean by that?

It all depends what kind of shape you’re in. Even though I’ve been doing these routines, I still jog up all the stairs getting out of the Montgomery BART station and do things like pitch batting practice in the evenings.

I've been doing it to.

So far, I love it.

My impressions

  1. Chest etc – pretty hard. I used my perfect pushups for the pushup section which I think made it harder. Still, really enjoyed it. Felt great after.
  1. Plyometrics – certainly the most difficult of all the workouts. I almost fell down a few times ’cause my quads were so wasted and I had a lot of trouble walking down stairs at work the next day. Awesome! Really looking forward to round 2 on this.
  1. Arms and Shoulders – I thought this one was pretty easy, all things considered. A lot of good routines in here for working various upper body muscles w/ dumbells.
  1. Yoga – Like Goofus said, pretty hard for yoga. Had a few poses that I could not hold, and I’m not very flexible either. Looking forward to this one next time around
  1. Legs and Back – I thought this one was pretty easy. Mostly felt like a quad workout, but maybe that’s cause I wasn’t doing everything right.
  1. - Kenpo X. I liked this one the least just because I am uncoordinated and had a hard time mastering the combinations. More often than not, I just ended up w/ my arms flailing all over the place. I also didn’t feel like my heart rate got up all that much – certainly not as much of a workout as #2.

Overall, I think it’s awesome. Keep in mind when I say “easy” I mean " I didn’t feel like I was gonna die and was able to do pretty much all of the reps etc w/o extra breaks." It’s all pretty tough.

Not doing any specific diet, but I eat pretty healthy anyways. I’ve done it for one week and I already have noticed increased flexibility. My biceps were really sore for about 4 days after #3, just now getting back to normal.

I downloaded it off ISOhunt.com, for those who are into that kinda thing.

by FairweatherFan on Jun 17, 2009 3:52 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

More often than not, I just ended up w/ my arms flailing all over the place

I LOL’d. The combinations can be tricky, especially if there’s an odd number of punches. If you go “left, right, left”, your brain wants to start with the right.

I agree that legs and back is a little easier, but the wall squats are pretty tough.

I’ve also learned I hate diamond pushups.

by MonkeyChow on Jun 18, 2009 7:32 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They say “about an hour a day”, but that’s a little bit of a stretch.

Chest & Back, Legs & Back, Arms & Shoulders are all one hour, but they’re followed by Ab Ripper X, which is another 15 minutes. If you account for a little time setting up and a little time cooling off before showring, it’s 1.5 hours.

Yoga X is 1.5 hours.

Plyometrics and Kenpo X are each an hour, but there’s at least 15 minutes extra of cooling down since these are hardcore aerobic workouts.)

About 1.5 hours a day is what you should plan on. The good news is there’s no extra time required going to and from the gym since you do it at home.

Goofus, a couple questions...

Were you able to just buy one of the programs and share all the material with your wife, or do you need to buy extra for an additional person?

Is this something that people generally repeat after the 90 days, or even decide to do it again? Or is it supposed to be a one-time deal?

And is it really only $120? If so, wow, that’s like 2 months gym dues, not bad.

The program comes with all kinds of stuff you write on to track your progress, so we just made copies. I’d recommend doing this anyway so you can use them again.

As far as post 90 days, I’ve been reading up on this. They suggest a two week break from rigorous exercise. A LOT of people stay with it. The workouts are great because you can add your intensity by using heavier weights and/or more reps. Tony Horton, the guy who leads you through all the workouts, is in great shape, but he still works his butt off in the videos. They also have additonal DVDs called “P90X+” that you can use to crank it up the next time around. They were on sale when Mrs. Goofus was ordering everything, so she bought them.

Yes, $120 gets you the 12 DVDs and all the guides and plans. You’ll still need to buy the equipment (pull-up bar, dumb bells, yoga mat), heart-rate monitor, and supplements (like I said earlier, not necessarily from them).

Neither Mrs. Goofus or me are “pudgy”. We’re both pretty active (skiing, volleyball, hiking, etc.), but we’re also in our 40s. I’m 6’2" and about 175 lbs with a long lean frame, but after two months of inertia following my ski accident, my stomach was softer than I was used to and I spare bicycle tire. My body fat percentage was about 20%, which is hardly pudgy, but more than I prefer, especially for my body type. We’re two weeks in and I think I can see some results. My stomach seems a little flatter and I’m down to about 18% body fat.

My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman

by Goofus on Jun 18, 2009 9:50 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

after a week of doing it i got three different comments yesterday that my face is looking leaner. i’m 6’0, 188 when i started (184 this morning; it’s probably just lost water weight but woo-hoo!) and 25% body fat. i’ve often had a bit of a fat around my mid-section that i need to lose (i’m 30), but i’ve lost it before and am determined to lose it again. my goal is to lose the stomach fat, tighten up my core, and drop down to 18% body fat.

i would highly recommend the program. this morning i pulled my shirt off to take a shower and could already see my muscles getting tighter- it felt awesome.

For anybody considering doing a diet/exercise program do it NOW!!! It doesn’t have to be as intense as what these crazy people are doing either, but good for them though.
For you youngins out there, don’t wait to get in shape, I hit 40 and my thyroid stopped working properly making it almost impossible for me to lose weight. Do it before your pilot light burns out!

I use this note book to help keep track of things. I like the way it’s organized, they have a “diet minder” notebook too.

Absolutely correct!

Any program is good and it only gets harder as you get older. I chose P90X because it’s hardcore enough that I felt it would be a real challenge to do and accomplishment to make it all the way through. (I needed to challenge my ego to really get enthused.)

I might have to consider this

Since graduating college last year my activity level has fallen off a cliff. I guess that’s what happens when you go from being a college lacrosse player to being stuck in a cubicle. Anything that I can do from my living room is a bonus as I am usually not motivated to go anywhere after I get home from work.

Really, go for it! I played soccer in college, you’d never know it to look at me now! Save yourself!!!!

People always said “your metabolism will slow down” I figured I could deal with that, they didn’t tell me it would STOP!!

There is a series of dvds called “tight on time” and another called “10 minute solutions” that I will put on to get me going in the morning. I figure I can find 10 freaking minutes, but then once I get started I usually end up doing more. 10 minutes isn’t very intimidating, especially when you are rushed just to get through the day as it is.

I've kinda always been in shape

Middle School Soccer/X country – > High School Soccer / X country / Track – > College Water Polo → Now.

But I’ve never done anything like this before. At first the whole “work out video” element of it seemed lame, but it’s really not.

I’m at work now, and I actually can’t wait to get home and do disc 1 again.

Any activity people can do is a plus. We as a nation spend entirely too much time sitting around eating ho ho’s.

I'm on Day 73

and I lost about 7% body fat.

The great thing is that is intense. But if you’re still starting out, you can always pause it and catch up. I turned all the DVD’s into .avi files and scanned the nutrition booklet and calenders into .pdf’s for easy access from my laptop. I travel a lot more and I don’t miss a workout on the road now.

The plyometrcis exercise seemed kind of silly to do (especially running circles around my towel) in my living room, so I took my laptop and speakers to the backyard. Great success.

Shoulders & Yoga X is by far my favorite. AbRipper… not so much. The misses loves Kenpo X

Overall P90X is a great supplement to my regular gym visits. I wish everyone on the program the best of results.

what's so terrible about AbRipper?

seems the consensus is that it is not pleasant.

Pleasant it is not. Its like 330+ ab reps in various positions in like 15 minutes. I hurt for days after I did it for the first time, and I hadn’t even completed every rep of each exercise

Ya, I hate the dudes/dudets in the background doing like the hardest version of every exercise and still finishing. Bastards!
