CC Sabathia was in the AA Eastern League at 19. Made the Indians opening day roster the following year and won 17 games as a rookie. And he didn’t perform as well as Alderson or Bumgarner have in 90 IP in AA at 19.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 16, 2009 8:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Josh Beckett, in his 2nd year of pro ball made the ML’s at age 21, after dominating both High A and AA ball.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 16, 2009 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I have no doubt that they would be better than Sanchez and maybe Zito right now, but that would:

1) Start their arb clocks early

2) Potentially hurt development, especially with Bumgarner’s supposed need to work on secondary pitches

3) Possibly result in them throwing more high-leverage pitches with strain

4) Place them in the unfortunate position of needing pinch hitter Rich Aurilia come through when they are losing 1-0 in the 9th

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jun 16, 2009 8:51 PM PDT up reply actions

we’d see Alderson before Mad Bum. He’s a bit older and seems like he can do more things with the ball right now.

I’m not saying I would promote them, just that I wouldn’t really call it rushing them either. There’s a precedence for this and the track record isn’t any worse than the norm.

by oldjacket on Jun 16, 2009 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions

All I’m saying is I don’t think its lunacy to think that either might make their ML debuts by the end of the year.

Felix Hernandez was in the Seattle rotation in the 2nd half of his year at 19, while pitching in the AAA for the first half. I don’t think it stunted his growth at all to get a call up. If a guy shows he can handle a level then promote him. There’s no reason to keep a guy rotting away just because it slows his arbitration clock. 6 years is a long time to plan ahead for. Especially when your team actually has payroll flexibility. It would be one thing if we were the Rays or the Marlins, but we’re not.

They are pitching super well, but they’re not forcing the callup as much as Lincecum did. He was just ridiculous. These guys are younger and I don’t mind having them wait longer.

Wil has a good point as well – these guys don’t need to be on the 40-man roster yet. That gives the org some flexibility.

I know. Aurilia, Velez, and Bocock are on the 40-man. But if you get rid of them you’ll just need to add someone else.

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jun 16, 2009 9:01 PM PDT up reply actions

O’Sullivan has less time in AA than Alderson or Mad Bum do now. True he was in AAA this year too but he pitched awful other than his W-L record and now he’s got a shutout going in his first ML start.

I don’t mind having them wait either, but to think that they couldn’t be good upon promotion isn’t necessarily true.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 16, 2009 9:08 PM PDT up reply actions

well, the original discussion was about promoting Bumgardner right now. A september call-up would be par for the course for an elite pitching prospect.
