Roster Moves
109 of us probably just posted this but....
From Schulman:
The Giants have made a seismic shift in their personnel today. They optioned struggling second baseman Emmanuel Burriss to Triple-A Fresno and purchased the contract of 25-year-old infielder Matt Downs, who just took a terrific round of batting practice.
Burriss has been exceptional defensively but has not had a hit since June 4. Downs was hitting .288/.333/.453 with six homers and 38 RBIs with the Grizzlies. I presume he will be in the lineup tonight.
Catcher Steve Holm was designated for assignment to clear space on the 40-man roster for Downs.
Downs is in the lineup batting eiighth. Otherwise, the lineup is the same as yesterday's.

I’m just glad they didn’t DFA Lincecum in the process.

True. Why not send Burris down instead of Frandsen? I am cool with seeing Downs, but expect Frandsen to be here soon again.

Hmmm...
…I was actually expecting Aurilia to be DFAed, but this works. Let’s hope Holm isn’t claimed and Molina injured….

Weirdhair’s been playing okay, probably why they decided it was okay to take the chance with Holm.
by Merope on Jun 16, 2009 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
is it really taking a chance?
a backup catcher like Steve Holm is incredibly replacable

I hope Manny has a good attitude about this demotion and spends the summer in Fresno working on his swing and playing at short every day. I’d love to see him back up in the majors in September.
And fare thee well, Steve Holm. For a nondescript backup catcher, you gave us some good moments while wearing the French Vanilla.

always nice to see a new face out there, but it still seems to me that this is bad news for this year. If Burriss could have kept going like he was a few weeks ago, it would have been an extra spark to the team. And I don’t care what the metrics say, the dude can field. Of course, the bad news had already happened – ofer 27 don’t lie – so no use crying now. Just don’t see Downs or Franny having the potential to become any kind of force out there. Maybe kenshin is right (see today’s fanposts): we need to deal for a 2ndbagger.

I think, unfortunately, Burriss is who we thought he is; a talented young guy that needs to work on his glove work so it evens out (without as many valleys) and needing a lot of work on his hitting approach. I’ll gaze into my crystal ball and say he will fix the first and the second (due to current organization philosophy) probably will not happen for a long while. In the mean time bring in the filler and see if we can get something better than shaky (uneven if you prefer) glove work and better than the OPS+ 49 – 65 range.

Hard Truth
Burriss’s high point was well over a month ago now (May 10) and he still only had a .658 OPS. Dude wasn’t going to be sparking anything.

you're right
I was duped. But when a guy’s OPS climbs 200 points in the first 10 days of May, that’ll happen. I knew that he wasn’t going to have multiple hits every night, but I figured there might be a happy medium…
by BigO on Jun 16, 2009 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, it did really seem like Manny was on fire! But it was mostly that a few more bloops were falling and more groundballs were getting through for a short period of time.

when a guy’s OPS climbs 200 points in the first 10 days of May that more than likely means he had a very very shitty OPS in April

Downs tore it up in ST, I’m surprised Sabes didn’t put him on the team then.

Downs also gives position flexibility. And he has a little bit of speed and a little bit of power.

meh… why are we excited about Downs? There’s probably something beyond those stats to get excited about.

Any thought that the move was done now, while Fransden was inelligible to be brought back up, as a message to him regarding his whining in the press?
by APGiantsFan on Jun 17, 2009 9:19 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
No, they probably just didn’t like what they’ve seen from Burriss in the past few days and are shortsighted enough to have not sent him down when Frandsen was still with the big club.
