Around SBN: The End Of Sabanball: Details, Barbarians, And Precision

Considering what the Pirates were willing to accept in the McClouth trade, this could be a really good fit for us.

Long term, we could sign him to a reasonable extension, or offer him arbitration and likely get at least a sandwich pick.

I’d be ok with this.

Quick and dirty bb-ref stat neutralization to AT&T Park and his line goes up to: .269/.372/.489, if that makes any sense.

Uh, I don’t know why I added on an “if that makes any sense” to the end.

I'll take it!

he’s about average defensively, if anyone cares.

If by about average, you mean below average!

by xanthan on Jun 15, 2009 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Is that according to fangraphs? BPro has him at about average.

He’s like a career -5 runs below average at 1B per 150 games.

I don’t want to sound like a stat snob, but really, don’t use FRAA/FRAR. We don’t know exactly how it’s calculated, and what we do know is terrible (like, putouts + assists / innings, with very slight adjustments).

Sure, if he’s cheap. But I’ve got the feeling I’ll hate any trade for him. It’s still pretty amazing that the Giants can’t produce a +2 win first basemen.

Wrong Laroche

The article mentions Andy not Adam

by krazybalr on Jun 15, 2009 3:57 PM PDT reply actions

“first baseman Andy LaRoche”

Adam is the LaRoche at first, I think.

by FPTV on Jun 15, 2009 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions

The article actually refers to “first baseman Andy LaRoche” so I’m not really sure who they’re talking about here…

by FPTV on Jun 15, 2009 3:57 PM PDT reply actions

Straight-up for Sanchez?

by lincecumania on Jun 15, 2009 3:58 PM PDT reply actions

Maybe for Andy LaRoche.

The problem with getting a first baseman

If Pablo’s elbow flares up again, we’re screwed.

We should be looking for a third baseman.

I'll take me some Freddy Sanchez!

If it’s a Pittsburgh firesale lets get someone who fills our most glaring need. Sanchez would be perfect and he is owed 6.1M in ’09 with an 8M option for ’10. That seems awfully rich for Pittsburgh.

by OTTOMATIC on Jun 15, 2009 4:16 PM PDT reply actions

A deal for both of them could help fill a lot of our offensive holes. I wonder how much the Pirates would want though.

That’d make us a really weird team. If Renteria hit a little better, and Sandoval hit a little worse, you’d have the ultimate steady, boring, unspectacular team.

Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

by rotorueter on Jun 15, 2009 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Freddy Sanchez has an OPS of .845 and has made 1 error this year! I’d say short of a Chase Utley or Ian Kinsler there isn’t a better young second baseman out there. Nothing unspectacular about that.

by OTTOMATIC on Jun 15, 2009 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I was more looking at his entire body of work, but who knows, maybe he’s having a huge year.

by wilriv21 on Jun 15, 2009 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah Freddy Sanchez is a stud – just doesn’t get alot of pub because he plays in Pittsburgh.

by OTTOMATIC on Jun 15, 2009 4:46 PM PDT up reply actions

He also doesn’t get much ‘pub’ because he terrible in 2008.

Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

by rotorueter on Jun 15, 2009 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions

2008 was pretty bad, but still not “Burris” bad! And his 05 was good, 06 and 07 were real good, and he is having a great year again this year. Even in his “bad” year last year he would still solid defensively.

by OTTOMATIC on Jun 15, 2009 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Sanchez is a good player, but he’s not really the kind of player we should be targeting, unless we’re getting him with a LaRoche.

by Natto on Jun 15, 2009 4:50 PM PDT up reply actions

With second base being our biggest weakness don’t you think adding a player of Sanchez caliber SHOULD be the type of player we are targeting? It seems like he would be huge upgrade both offensively and defensively and we wouldn’t be blocking anyone in our system short or long term.

by OTTOMATIC on Jun 15, 2009 4:55 PM PDT up reply actions

the Pirates got a lot more for Nate McLouth than you seem to think

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 15, 2009 4:50 PM PDT reply actions

If I were Frank Wren, I would have made the deal as well.

Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

by rotorueter on Jun 15, 2009 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t have, but that is neither here nor there. The point is; that McLouth trade is not indicative that the Pirates are going to let themselves be ripped off in trades.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 15, 2009 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

Based on BA’s Top 10 Braves Prospects for 2009:

  1. Gorky’s Hernandez
  2. John Locke
and Charlie Morton is a projected 5th starter.

by lincecumania on Jun 15, 2009 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Whoops, I meant Hernandez was the 4th rated prospect, and Locke was 7th.

by lincecumania on Jun 15, 2009 5:04 PM PDT reply actions

As was noted ad nausem, he was probably talking about Adam.
