Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Post-Game Chit Chat Place

I only watched the last two innings after getting home from work, but seemed to have been a nice game.  Criticism to the players who deserve criticism.  Congratulations to the players who deserve congratulations.  Oh and apparently Nate Schierholtz hit an inside the park home run, so he won't play again for a few weeks.

And man, I am glad Matt Cain figured out how to win.

Kenshin Update: wow... a CG, 9K, 0 walk performance by Cain.  Is this the best start of his career to date?

I’m guessing the post-game show is property of the Giants like the game is since it’s on the “Giants Network”. Once they go to Damon Bruce’s (or whoever’s) show, then it’s KNBR property.

Basically what cornball said. (wow, that’s kind of weird to say.)

0 on the horizontal is the pitch having no lateral movement, a straight pitch. Most pitches tail, and in this case that’s to the negative. Curves can break away from that tail, and sliders are usually around “straight” (but with dip).

I think I poorly phrased my response. Take this purely hypothetical situation:

A) Matt Cain shuts out the Padres in petco park, giving up 4 hits and 2 walks.

B) Matt Cain shuts out the Philies in Philadelphia, giving up 6 hits and 3 walks.

Objectively, giving up 2 less hits and 1 less walk is better, but I subjectively would be more impressed with his performance against the Philies lineup in a hitters park.

Since the A’s lineup isn’t very good and he’s pitching in a hitters park, I’m guessing he might have had performances in which he put more men on base but I would be more impressed by.

It’s pretty neutral. It appeared to favor pitchers early on as hitters had to get acclimated to the dimensions of the park so mass media tagged it a pitchers park.

by SeeingStars on Jun 14, 2009 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s been neutral, but It has its eccentricities. We all know it kills power for lefties, but they also get a little from the right fielder having to shade so far to center. Stuff like that. It evens out nicely overall, though.

just some back of the envelop math

Padres OBP is .320. Phillies is .340. I looked up Phillies park and it’s multi-year run factor is 102, which is the same as SF. Padres is 89. We’ll just assume that the OBP factor is the same.

So the Padres “real” OBP is .320 + (.320*1/0.9) / 2 = .337, actually about the same as Phil (adjusted 2% down, which I am not going to bother to do.

So, giving up 6 base runners in Petco is about the same as ~7 baserunners everywhere else (park effect is only .9)…. so without further arithmatic, A) is the better game.

If the story is true that Randy overheard/knew Nate was more comfortable in Right Field and then volunteered for left, he gets an an assist on Nate’s assists this series.

I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Fred Lewis, but maybe now Bochy knows which one is Nate Schierholtz, and Torres is looking like a decent option, too. It’s hard to trade Winn, but if some other manager has rated this unrated non-star, he should return some value.

Torres

Torres was an HR shy of the cycle in this game. I’m really liking this guy as a 5th outfielder. He has blazing speed, plays outstanding defense and has a current line .313/.421/594!

Yes, he’s 31. No, I’m not advocating him being a starter. Yes, I can stop thinking about Andres Torres, but don’t want to. He’s been an ideal bottom-of-the-roster guy and helped the team in numerous ways.

As an added bonus, his interview after the game with Amy G was the first time I’ve heard him talk. He sounds like a really nice guy and one who’s easy to pull for.

I’m guessing/hoping the team “gets it”, especially with Juggernate emerging. Torres is a great 5th outfielder because at 31, he’s not a prospect who’s development is at risk. He could stay off the field for a week or two and it’s no big deal.

The thing that would throw a monkey wrench into the equation is if they decide they need to bring up Bowker as another outfielder.
