Random Draft Pick Info found Online
I've been Googling and otherwise looking up our draft picks today. A few things I've learned:
- 28th round pick Jamaine Cotton is, like Juan Carlos Perez from last year's draft class, a student at Western Oklahoma. Despite the name, he's not a New Zealander - he's a native of the US Virgin Islands. He has a Facebook account - you can't see it without being a friend, but in his profile picture he's wearing a Cardinals hat (boooo). Here is his player profile page from Western Oklahoma. Not much info, sadly.
- 3rd round pick Chris Dominguez is apparently not popular among some fans of the University of Missouri, who have set up a Facebook group predicting he has a future as a sanitation worker due to his exuberant celebration of a home run against their team. The group is two years old and has 17 members, all of whom, I'm sure, are devastated that Dominguez's career as a "garbologist" is now on hold.
- 50th round pick Kaohi Downing was drafted as a pitcher, but mainly played as an outfielder and hit .339 with 8 home runs and a .442 OBP. His pitching consisted of a relatively small number of appearances as a reliever. Despite growing up in Hawaii and attending college in San Diego, he's a White Sox fan. His profile specifically mentions he wants to play professionally, so unlike last year's 50th round pick, maybe he'll sign.
- It's hard to find info on 49th round pick Austin Goolsby - the results are mostly for Austan Goolsbee, an economic advisor to Barack Obama.
- Attn wilriv: Diego Seastrunk can toe the rubber! He has a perfect 0.00 ERA, in fact - in one inning in 2008. He's also a native of the humble town of Humble, Texas.
Just a few random tidbits I've come across. I'm posting them in the hopes that they might amuse, and that this fanpost might give a place for other people to share similar tidbits they've come across.

mentions that Dominguez thought he might go earlier in the draft, but says he’s happy to be drafted regardless of when he was taken. The author speculates he might start in rookie ball but finish the season in Low-A.

Of the 17 in the Chris Dominguez facebook group, there are some notable names:
-Aaron Crow (even left a message on the group wall)
-Kyle Gibson
-Kyle Mach (Giants’ 27th round pick)
-Ryan LOLlis (Giants 37th round pick)

Kyle Mach’s inclusion would be interesting, for two reasons: (1) he’s a member of the afore-mentioned University of Missouri baseball team which seems to dislike Dominguez, and (2) as a fellow thirdbaseman, they would expect to be competing against each other for playing time.

Jermaine Cotton did indeed go to Western Oklahoma and was drafted by the Giants, but he’s a pitcher. The guy who is like Juan Perez is his teammate and fellow Giant Draftee Randolph Oduber, No?

It’s Jamaine, actually, not Jermaine. Also on his profile he’s listed as a freshman, so I don’t think he was JCP’s teammate.
Oduber’s a freshman, too – and he’s from Aruba.
I wonder how ballplayers from Aruba and the Virgin Islands end up at a junior college in Oklahoma.

when I talked with Meulens in Fresno, he mentioned he works hard to draw attention to the kids in his Dutch Antilles Baseball Academy, to get them scholarship offers to play in the States. I don’t know if VI kids end up in his academy, but Aruba is definitely part of it.

Yes. I’m hoping they sign Oduber because he has ridiculous power. But he’s probably a tough sign since he’s said he wants to return to school to improve his skills. The low round pick doesn’t instill confidence that he’ll sign, either.

He’s not a Giants pick, but the last guy taken in the whole draft, Alibay Barkely, was profiled by the New York Times back in May.
Also not a Giants pick: the Reds drafted a player from Jesse Foppert’s old stomping grounds, the University of San Francisco – and the kid’s name is Derek POPPERT.
Back to our picks, Ryan Cavan, our 16th round pick, is a Giants fan, but lists Chipper Jones, Derek Jeter, and Cal Ripken Jr. as his favorite baseball players. He also apparently played for three different universities in three years.
