Best Giants Pitches of All Time
Watching Timmy's mastery of the changeup in last night's shutout got me thinking--how does his compare to the next best change we've ever seen (Jason Schmidt). So I went and found this game to compare the two. After watching video of Schmidt's 16 K performance against Florida, I was reminded how insanely nasty his changeup was at 90 mph with sharp bite down and in to a righty. So that all said, I thought I'd ask everyone about their list of the nastiest Giants pitches of the last couple decades. Here's my list:
- Jason Schmidt's changeup
- Robb Nen's slider
- Russ Ortiz' cutter
- Felix Rodriguez' fastball
- Shawn Estes' curveball
- Timmy's everything

Don’t forget Robb Nen. He had a pretty good slider.

I heard about this closer we had
Robb Nen. Didn’t he have a decent slider?
Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

It was okay. Even better though was Robb Nenn’s slider.

Same
That fucker went down. It was like a split, and if I’m remembering correctly, many announcers thought it was a split. It would be pretty sweet to have a job where I have to do no work whatsoever and most people still assumed I was a genius in my field.

Nen's slider at its best..
..was absolutely unfair. I don’t know who could have mistaken it for a split, but I guess it didn’t act like a slider either. Sometimes he’d throw the thing at 92mph, it would start out shoulder level, and end up nearly bouncing on the plate. It was a thing of beauty, especially to lefties.

Why limit it to the past 2 decades?
I’d add Christy Mathewson’s screwball, Carl Hubbell’s screwball (he once struck out 5 straight hitters in the ‘34 All-Star game with it – including Ruth, Gehrig, and 3 other future HOFers), and (to add 2 that I actually did see) Marichals fastball (all 1,000 varieties of it) and Gaylord Perry’s spitter.

Did Marichal have a crazy screwball too? I heard/read an anecdote some years back where he apparently struck Micky Mantle out on three straight screwballs looking.

I was going to mention this. During the short time that Lowry was healthy and his control was stable – which, admittedly, wasn’t a very long period – his changeup was as good as just about any I’ve seen.

I was thinking Garrelts’ fastball, before Roger Craig got a hold of him and taught him the split. He consistently threw it over 100mph. As I mentioned before, I named my oldest son after him, when he was the only Giant selected to the 1985 all star team.

Regarding those Lincecum pitches...
From a post at Athletics Nation:
Let’s say something here: Tim Lincecum is sick,; his changeup would make you cry if you had to face it, and serious ML hitters just walk away questioning why they bother… they are, to quote The Boss (even though the Manfred Mann arrangement might be the best 7 minutes 5 seconds of music ever recorded by human beings) wrapped up like a deuce, another runner in the night. The way his fastball and change look so identical, it’s just not fair, it’s not… add the sick curve and the slider and the Cy Young hardware is not an aberration or a joke. Whether a small wiry guy like that, who will no doubt be required to produce ID at establishments that serve alcohol at least until he is 70 years old, can keep his arm attached to his body with a violent, whippy motion like that remains to be seen, but for now he is Utterly Devastating with the cap letters earned.

I saw Springsteen on VH1 doing a funny bit about that song. He said Manfred Mann took his line about a car in the cover version (deuce) and turned it into a feminine hygiene product. (douche) He said the public spoke and they wanted the hygiene product and that was why the cover went to number one.

I love the Springsteen version of Blinded by the Light, because I love the stream of consciousness unrefined song writing, it’s kind of like seeing greatness developing right before your eyes (like when I saw MadBum pitch for San Jose), but I’ve never cared much for the Manfred Mann version.

Although I remember standing and looking at the Boss on both Time and Newsweek in a grocery store I was already loving the Mann arrangement before I had heard the Springsteen version.
To this date nothing has changed my sentiment.

Shawn Estes curveball was pretty damn phenomenal, he regularly made big league hitters look foolish with that pitch. One of my all time favorites was seeing him completely buckle Timo Perez’s knees during that otherwise forgettable series.

The Estes and Zito curveballs
see , I grew up thinking (reinforced by the hook I myself was able to throw for one solitary year of my entire life) that the only possible way a curve could be delivered was sidearm or 3/4 , and that its action would go from outside toward the plate , depending on the arm used. So seeing pitchers who throw a 12/6 was frankly mind – boggling. And when first introduced to the arm mechanics employed by the modern pitcher – well , I just winced in pain.
