BA: early 2008 draft grades

Here's the link, which I don't think is subscriber-only.   Buster Posey comes in at a reasonable #5, and Brandon Crawford gets a gratifying #9.  MCC crowd favorite Justin Smoak, although currently injured, comes in at #8 with the notation that, had he been playing all season, he'd probaby be higher on their list.  Oh, and get this: he takes walks.  He clearly wouldn't have fit in in our organization.  I take no little pride in noting that my preference for our selection, Gordon Beckham, was listed as #1.

So, despite the fact that it's still pretty early to judge, are we McCovenites still happy with our selection of Gerald Posey?  Any other thoughts about our 2008 draft?

Gordon Beckham is a bust

If the Giants gave up on Jesus Guzman after ten atbats, I say that Gordon Beckham is a complete bust for the 2 for 28 (.071) that he’s put up so far with the Chicago White Sox. Let’s pray Posey doesn’t get off to that kind of start for Bochy when his turn comes.

Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!

To be fair

Jesus mainly came up to DH in interleague…

If by Major league ready, you mean, his glove might play well at the T-ball level, then yes. He can hit but he the defense has a long way to go for him to be a real major leaguer…

I think Ozzie Guillen is under orders from Kenny Williams to play Beckham, because he doesn’t seem very pleased about it and keeps bitching about Beckham not being ready.

I think Beckham is going to come around pretty quickly; I was at the White Sox game against the Tribe last Sunday and he looked fine despite an 0-4. His BABIP in 28 AB is an absurd .087, and with 5 K in 28 AB it’s not as if he is just overmatched at the plate.

I was at a CWS game last year and it was very obvious that Beckham’s bat was the quickest on the field. He also blasted an oppo home-run. I know it’s metal bats, but the difference in talent was glaringly obvious. I have a feeling he’ll be fine.

The biggest concern about Posey seemed to be lack of power for such a high pick. Since it looks like he’s projecting to be Jason Kendall but with pop, I’m loving the Posey pick.

Nice call on Beckham, Lyle. He’s really hit the ground running.

Personally, I thought Posey was a fine pick, and I like his development so far. I don’t want him rushed, but I can’t wait for the days he’s anchoring our lineup.

Not too long ago BA did a Prospect Handbook rundown that looked at what an incredible haul the Padres got in the 2008 draft, especially some of the lower picks. Together with the early grades on Colorado’s ‘09 draft, that’s not an trend I’d like to see continue.

Man, just wait until Bozied, Greene, Nady, Barfield, and Gautreau come up and fill the lineup around Burroughs. We’re in trouble.

(Not a response to your post, per se, but I remember worrying about that for a year or two…)

Good thing we’ll have Torcato, Niekro and Linden banging it around to combat them!

Some good lefties, too – Francisco Liriano and Ryan Hannaman may not have the hype of Foppert, Williams, and Ainsworth, but they have potential too!

We could do this about the 90s Giants, too. I remember being really excited over Jesse Ibarra leading the minors in home runs while in Low-A.

in the 90’s we only drafted crappy “athlete” outfielders whose own mothers didn’t think they could hit.

i too remember this

I was living in San Diego at the time and Khalil and Burroughs looked like they were future stars and then Barfield came up, and they had peavy, young and adrian gonzalez, man I was scared. How did they eff that up?

They stopped drafting well

What happened to SD is a good example of why a team needs to continue to draft well. It seems like SD banked on all those players turning into good starters for years to come, but not all of them worked out, especially the position players.

They needed to keep drafting well just in case some of the young guys failed, but they didn’t. They had the #1 overall pick in 2004 and chose Matt Bush for crying out loud!

by Squire_Boone on Jun 13, 2009 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Example 1A is in Oakland. After the great teams they had with Giambi, Tejada, and Mulder/Zito/Hudson trio, the didn’t draft very well. That forced Beane to trade Haren to restock the farm system, which led directly to the mess they’re in right now.

by tyrannoman on Jun 13, 2009 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be fair, when your team sucks, you draft a lot higher. Sabean’s not getting Lincecum, Bumgarner, Posey, and Wheeler if the team wins the division.

Catcher is the only position that reaching is acceptable with high pick

Good free agent catchers are a myth. A good catcher needs 2-3 years of seasoning in the minor leagues to learn the craft, then is up and under team control for 6 years. By the time they are free agents they are usually on the other side of 30.

Not saying Posey is a reach, but great catchers deserve special consideration.

by jctGamer on Jun 13, 2009 11:21 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Bengie Molina was a pretty good free agent catcher, first 2 1/2 months of 2009 notwithstanding.

Still prefer Posey

Let’s face it, Posey could be playing in the big leagues right now if the Giants were as desperate and dumb as the ChiSox. Maybe not at catcher, but he could have been switched to 3b (as Beckham was) if we wanted to rush him. Without a doubt, Posey deserved to be promoted to Conn. when MadBum, T2, and Crawford were. For some reason known only to the Ginats Brazzz they want him in SJ for 300 ABs before promoting him to Fresno. I would have preferred to have him in Conn. to continue building the pitcher-catcher rapport between him and MadBum/T2. On another point, I don’t see why the kid from the Padres is #2. Sure he’s hitting a lot of HRs and getting a lot of walks, but he’s in low A and he’s playing a non-demanding defensive position – and he’s already got 30 Ks. I’m not saying he shouldn’t be on the list, just not near the top, unless he’s also stealing a lot of bases and has double digit assists. The playing field is littered with kids who hit a ton in low A and never even made it to the majors.

Oh, and how about a WOOHOO! for the Giants – the only team with 2 guys on the list (#5 and #9)!

Wait what?

Didn’t people not want (Gordon) Beckham because they thought he had limited upside? I thought people got angry when he was linked to the Giants.

Posey/Beckham

GB’s MiL line: 330/.381/.528 (58-for-176), 23 2B, 4 HR, 25 RBI, 14 BB, 26 K
BP’s MiL line: .310/.406/.526 (66-for-213), 16 2B, 10 HR, 44 RBI, 29 BB, 36 K.

Posey has a slightly lower BA, slightly better OBP, and an equal SLG. Although he has fewer doubles, he has lots more home runs and RBI, and a much better BB/K ratio. He plays a much more difficult position, at which he is throwing out almost 50% of attempted base stealers. Why would anyone, from these stats, prefer Beckham? I’m puzzled.

by campanari on Jun 13, 2009 10:17 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

They’re playing at different minor-league levels in different offensive environments. These stat lines tell you nothing.

I don’t prefer Beckham, but if you adjust for league difficulty and other context, he has slightly out-hit Posey so far this year.

by Dan from NM on Jun 13, 2009 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let's not forget

Posey had a better (or at least as good) Spring Training than Beckham, while playing against the same class of opposition – while he was learning to handle a big league staff for the first time.
