Seven back. I'm NOT arguing with success.

So...we continue to continue....to contend. This has an eerie feeling similar to 2002 , when we played amazing ball and slipped into the postseason. Then again , something tiny inside me is screaming SPIT AND BALING WIRE!!!

This pitching success is , of course , unsustainable.
Do we have any more Pablos emerging , of do we bite the bullet and trade shiny arms for shiny bats?

I like to post under my own posts as well. Don’t want the embarrassment of having my post up there for days with only two comments.

There are some interesting bats in the minors that could come up, but the Giants don’t really seem to be interested in guys that can hit the ball.

Something tells me this is nothing like 2002, though.

Absolutely! I’m having a great time this year for pretty much the first time since Bonds flied out in his last at bat… and even then the losing was ROUGH.

why not?

because the 2002 was actually good?

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 13, 2009 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That team was so good.

But I can’t really think of even one player from that team who I can take and say, “oh, Emmanuel Burris is like this year’s…”

Jeff Kent? Ha…

Ha.

Aaron Rowand = Kenny Lofton? Randy Johnson = Livan Hernandez?

There’s just no corallary.

But I can understand the excitement over winning being similar. Even winning modestly, it’s really hard not to get excited.

But then I forgot to. Just getting it out there before somebody else does.

to be serious…why is the pitching success unsustainable?

Cain has always thrown a few brilliant games, followed by a few clunkers. People have long said he’d throw a nohitter some day. He’s more mature, better conditioned they said in Spring, so he is more consistent. Timmy’s the Cy Young. Zito and Johnson are capable of some wins. My personal opinion is Zito needs extra rest occasionally for the health of his fastball.

Then it’s down to the bullpen, and the key is Romo who may be back in shape. If this keeps up, we will see a July deal for a hitter and a wildcard race.

It’s mostly because, at the moment, Zito and Cain are both outpitching their peripherals.

they may decline

but I’d also think that Johnson and Sanchez would improve…with things pretty much evening out.

the question is...

If the Giants are still in WC (or even division???) contention come the All-Star break, I believe that Brass will feel forced to make a trade. The prime motivation for this, however, will be: buts-in-seats. They can go about this in two ways, by making a symbolic “look-we-want-to-compete-trade” or an actual “we-are-going-to-compete-trade.”

I think the former looks like this:
Trade for Mark DeRosa. I would welcome this trade. DeRosa would give us a huge production improvement at 3B and player that we could play at a number of IF and OF positions if we have to. If they DFA Aurilla, Auribe or DeRosa become way better options off the bench. Alone, however, DeRosa wouldnt dramatically improve our odds.

I think the later looks like this:
Trade for Mark DeRosa and an LF bat. I am not sure why Matt Holliday is apparently off the table. A right handed hitter with power who plays a solid LF and knows the NL west is a good thing for this team. I like Fred Lewis and I really want him to do well, but in all this debate recently over who was going to give you better production at 2nd I think where we are really missing production is in LF. Lewis’ line and shakey D are not helping this team compete. If we could work a deal with the As the combination of Holliday and DeRosa in our lineup would make our chances of WC or Division wins much much better.

I should say, I am not good at figuring out what it would take to make these trades but if one could be done by moving Sanchez I wouldnt cry. Certainly some other pitching prospects and cash will be required — almost certainly to the As. I think its reasonable to suggest that all would have welcomed those moves in the OS. To me this means that they would be worthwhile moves at the deadline.

So, despite if you disagree that we should get these players, what do you think it would take to get these players?

by uber on Jun 13, 2009 11:30 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I am not sure why Matt Holliday is apparently off the table.

Because trading prospects for a few months of Holliday is not worth it to the Giants in the long term. If they want Holliday, they can pick him up in the offseason for just money and a draft pick.

I Don't Agree

I think taking a real and serious shot at winning the NL Wildcard Race this year could very well be worth this price. In addition, if Matt Holliday enjoyed his time in SF (like Jason Schmidt did in 2001) this might improve our odds of signing him for 2010 and beyond.

Matt Holliday cost the A’s Huston Street, Greg Smith and Carlos Gonzalez. I am sure that simular value would be what the A’s would be asking for in trade discussions. The floor of what the A’s would accept would be slightly greater value then the two draft choices they would get if they just keep him. I think somewhere in this range a deal can be struck that would not have the negative impact on 2010 and beyond that you fear.

And in your opinion, who in the Giants organization would be equal or greater value than what the A’s surrendered for Holliday? They gave up their closer, a mid-to-top level pitching prospect and an OF with a very high ceiling. Giving up value equal to that for 2+ months of Holliday is not worth it. Boras is going to take him FA and then the Giants would be forced to bid against Boston and both NY teams for his services in addition to giving up all that talent. Too rich for my blood…

And a pitcher enjoying his time at AT&T is not surprising. A hitter doing the same is a long shot.

In Addition To Talent; Dollars, Years Remaining Under Team Control, And Injury Risk Need To Be Considered.

While Huston Street is a closer he is not cheap at $4.5M in 2009, only has another year of team control (arbitration) left in which he will be even more expensive, and has shown himself to be is a serious injury risk.

Greg Smith is hardly someone I would discribe as approaching a top level pitching prospect. To me Greg Smith is clearly a middle level pitching prospect with a ceiling of the middle of a rotation but more likely bottom of the rotation. He does though have 5 years of team control left. As a side note Greg has been hurt this year and has only made 3 minor league starts for the Rockies. Perhaps the A’s traded damaged goods.

I agree with your accessment of Carlos Gonzalez as he does indeed have a high ceiling and has six full years of team control left. However, it must be noted that his career minor league totals (just an .832 OPS) is hardly impressive. I don’t see his numbers this year in AAA at Colorado Springs as a breakout (1048 OPS in 48 games) as this ballpark plays like Coors Field before the humidor (and it does indeed not have one).

So, what package can the Giants put tegether that could match this? First, As I stated above I don’t think we will have to go this high but if we did the following is something I think could make sense for both the Giants and the A’s.

Henry Sosa, Jesse English, and Brandon Crawford. My bet would be that we could avoid having to include Crawford and substitute Manny Burriss instead as Holliday’s trade value has demished away from Coors Field.

As for " And a pitcher enjoying his time at AT&T is not surprising. A hitter doing the same is a long shot." I think Cookyman answered this with “RHH shouldn’t have too much problem in AT&T.”

To Provide A Shot At The Post Season And Offensive Support For Their Young Pitching.

Beane felt he was unlikely to loss in this deal in that if Holliday didn’t make the A’s a playoff competitor Billy could still recapure equal value to the prospects he gave up at the trade deadline. i think Beane miscalculated (Holliday away from Coors is not the same player) and will have to settle for less (but still more then equal value to the 2 draft choices he would get if he kept Holliday.

Hmm. Kind of makes sense, I guess (ignoring the part about offensive support for the pitching).
