According to projections from ESPN, Baseball Prospectus, and Baseball America:

Buster Posey, Tim Alderson, and Madison Bumgarner are all set to arrive in the majors in 2010.

This list leaves us with surpluses and MAJOR holes.  Let’s run through our surpluses and holes before we move on:

Surpluses:

1) Starting Pitching: Lincecum, Cain, Zito & Sanchez will all return.  Johnson could for much cheaper, but I doubt it.  Plus, if they major baseball “experts” are right, Madbum and Tim2 will join them.  That gives us 6 starters.  And if you think Zito will finish with an ERA under 4.00: that could be 6 pretty good starters.

2) Relief Pitching: Lots of relievers in the minors and the majors, and you can always sign some/find some surprises in your own system.  Trades in this group can always net useful pieces.

Weaknesses:

1) Left side of our infield:  Burriss, Frandsen, Ishikawa, Bowker, Aurilia, Uribe.  You name them, we have tried and failed to put them in on the left side.  Im not sure if there are any studs (I think Orlando Hudson might be an FA) in this upcoming FA class, but this is definitely a weakness until Crawford/Noonan/AnVil/et al get promoted.

2) Outfield: Winn will probably be allowed to walk as a FA this offseason.

My Question:

What do we do between now and then for our 2010 team.  This is not a TRADE MATT CANE, or TRADE SANCHAS request.  I’m not throwing in the towel on this season.  I just want to know, what can be done between this moment and the start of 2010 to put us in the best position to win.

If he can maintain this level of play(and I don’t mean the hot streak, I mean what he’s averaged with the really sucky April + really good May) then he will be actually worth MORE than 12M, according to FanGraphs.

by Nibbler on Jun 12, 2009 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting but you still use those antiquated ways of measuring a player like rowand. Last year he was worth about 4 GARG (Grit Above Replacement Gamer) which was worth 37 million dollars, not bad. This year however he has been worth approximately 6.789 GARG or 83 bajillion dollars to the Giants. Aaron Rowand has been one of the better FA signings of the last decade, behind only Eckstein to Cardinals (the career leader in GARG)

somebody actually did make an advanced statistic to measure gritiness. They found that former Giants Ron “the runt” Hunt had the single grittiest season of all time in 1971 (while with the Expos), while Barry Bonds owns 5 of the top 15 least gritty seasons of all time.

I have a question.

If Raptor Jesus really catches on next year and sticks at 1B, what will we do with AnVil? LF maybe? Sandoval can play 3B, 1B, and C, which is fine until Guzman and Posey are ready, then he’ll be solidly at 3B.

I know you can never have too many good pitchers, but too many good 1B seems like a different kind of thing. I’m worried we may go the Texas Rangers Adrian Gonzalez/Mark Teixeira route and end up losing them both.

These are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others. -Groucho Marx

It is extremely unlikely that Guzman sticks as a good 1B until 2012 and ends up blocking Villalona. I worry about other more likely problems, like being struck by lightning.

Bags thinks Mad Bum will be in the rotation by next month.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 12, 2009 11:43 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn’t have space in the game story to quote Jonathan Sanchez, but we asked how he evaluates a start in which he walks seven yet allows just one run in 5 2/3 innings.

Thumbs up, he said.

"I’m really not happy I walked too many guys, but that’s how it worked out," he said. "I think I’m getting close to the roll I was on last year. I’ve just got to throw more innings and cut the walks. If I cut the walks, I can throw six or seven innings every time."

–
The biggest reason I think Sanchez will be traded in the coming weeks: Madison Bumgarner is 4-0 with a 1.86 ERA in five games at Double-A Connecticut. Nobody’s told me Bumgarner will be in the big leagues this season, but I’ve got to believe it can’t be long.

Bags is just speculating, but it’s pretty interesting to say the least. Making the jump from AA wouldn’t be a huge leap IMO. That kid West who nearly no-hit us was up from AA.

If Posey’s ready….

Rowand CF
Renteria SS
Johnson 1B
Dye LF
Sandoval 3B
Bowker RF
Posey C
Burriss 2B

If they decide to go for it this year, I’d be OK with them acquiring Johnson and Dye in the next month, and moving Molina down to Posey’s spot, with Winn in RF.

Dye has a reasonably priced club option for next year [$12m?], and Johnson’s a FA whose next contract should be reasonable too.

This is why I’m not exactly ready to buy into defensive metrics quite yet. I don’t really think either are all that good, and don’t think the gap is that large either. Way too much credit is given to Lewis simply because he is speedier than most corner OF’s.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 12, 2009 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They don’t give him that much credit, I mean, he’s essentially average-ish. He kicks the ball around some but he gets to more balls.

Dye just doesn’t get to anything. Which isn’t surprising, he’s old and his legs are pretty shot. I don’t know, I really don’t have any trouble believing that Dye is a -20 defensive outfielder. At this point, he’s a DH playing RF because of JI

JIM THOME.

by jponry on Jun 12, 2009 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Idk I just have a hard time going by that. He probably only averages out as average-ish because there’s butchers like Dunn and Dye out there for just about every team in the league. The difference between Randy Winn and Fred Lewis out in the field is night and day imo.

by Hobbes2d on Jun 12, 2009 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’s not playing RF though. He’s playing LF. So he should be compared to other LF.

I mean, there’s no question that if Randy Winn played LF every day, he’d be much better than Lewis and probably the best defensive LF in baseball. But … he’s not.

And the numbers, in the long run, do show Winn as being much better defensively in RF than Lewis is in LF.

He has to start. The Giants would be wasting him in the bullpen. He would be better off getting the innings at AA of AAA.

by gimpsta7 on Jun 12, 2009 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

As a spot starter/long reliever he could get over 100 major league innings. Would that be more beneficial to his development than 150 innings against inferior competition? Of course there’s the whole service clock argument but as I mentioned up above, bringing up a young pitcher and letting him pitch out of the bullpen is not the same as bringing up a young hitter and letting him rot on the bench.

I know there has been talk about who our ideal future GM would be; who would you want instead Bochy and Sabes(besides “anyone”)?

Insanity is just a state of mind.

Manny Acta for manager!!

He hasn’t had a fair chance because he’s been the manager of a bad team for these past three years. Imagine how good he would be with our errr, mediocre team!!

I wouldn’t be surprised if they let both walk, regardless of the results this year. Change at the top frequently, and quite justifiably, leads to change in management. Bosses like to be involved in hiring their own guys. Now it could be the Larry Baer’s continued presence will trump that, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a “thanks for everything you’ve done, but we’ve decided to go in another direction” press conference come October.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

If they can Sabean

I hope they don’t lose Barr. I think the scouting department has taken a major step forward in the last couple of years.

Kim Ng would be an excellent replacement for Sabean.

Yes!

I so wanted her to be the GM in Seattle but they chose some dude whose name I can’t pronounce. I have wanted her to replace Sabean ever since. She is such a great baseball mind. If any community will accept a female GM, it is San Francisco.

I really wanted her to be the GM in Seattle so that the Giants could hire Jack Zduriencik as their GM

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 12, 2009 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My bet is that they keep Sabean and replace Bochy. I mentioned this possible manager in a previous thread and I’ll throw it out again: Eric Wedge.

It definitely is still up in the air. If the team continues to play like this all season, (over .500 and borderline playoff contender) I can see both of them coming back next year. (unfortunately)

How about Bobby Valentine? He has completley refined the game in Japan and has had previous sucess in big market cities. Although I would like to replace Bochy, I think he stays. After all, even with our anemic offense, Bochy has us playing over .500 ball.

Bobby has it made in Japan.

He’s big in Japan. But I think his team also couldn’t afford to keep him anymore or something? There was some brouhaha overit.

Valentine has said many times he would leave Japan in a second for a big league job. The problem with Valentine is two fold though. His players don’t like him, (too honest) and he doesn’t take orders well. Very few GM’s are going to hire a manager who’s going to tell them to take a hike when they make a suggestion.

doesn't take orders well?

Sounds like the PERFECT manager if Sabes is still GM.

Too honest? “Hey there Kung Fu Panda, - maybe you should hit the gym, eh?” “Wilson – shave off that ridiculous beardy-mustochio thing… what are you, 17?”.

anyone think about moving jsanch to the bullpen one madbum and alderson come up, barring a trade?

Beltre, Holiday?
If not the FA list gets quite crappy and the Giants do have a surplus of SP.

Depends on what we do before the July 31 trade deadline.

Right now we only have a few regulars set for next year: Rowand, Sandoval, Renteria – two by virtue of their contract. That’s pretty much it. We need to look for upgrades for five positions. We won’t know if we’ll get another one until the trade deadline passes. We’ll probably look to upgrade RF, LF, 2B, and two of C/1B/3B depending on where we put Sandoval. Wherever we don’t spend to upgrade in FA, or trade to upgrade, we can fill with in house options.

There are a few things I know: if we’re relying on Bumgarner, Posey and/or Alderson to be major contributors, we’re in trouble – the odds are just way, way to bad that they’ll come up so quickly and contribute. I’d be very happy to have them all start out next year in Fresno to be brought up if we need an upgrade or injury replacement than to start with them jumping two or three levels to the bigs and being counted on to produce.

I’d go after Nick Johnson as a FA (unless he is a Type-A AND we have a pick below #16 in the first round). Use Guzman as a backup/platoon partner. Beltre is another option if he’s willing to sign for one year cheap. Also, Nady for the OF on a short-term deal. We could sign a starting pitcher or go with Pucetas – either is fine with me. I think we’ll have bullpen arms to trade for lineup upgrades.

I would definitely offer Bengi arbitration. I would also tell him unequivocally that Sandoval is going to be our starting catcher next year (unless he’s going to play 3B or 1B, in which case we’ll sign another C), and he’ll be riding pine for 130 games as our backup if he accepts – which he won’t, as that would destroy his potential free agent earnings the following year. If he accepts, that’s not the end of the world and we’ll just move Pablo over to third or first like this year. I would also offer Howry and Winn, as neither would be unwelcome on the team next year. Depending on how they finish out this year and what we add in free agency, they’ll more than likely decline as well, hoping for one final multi-year contract. That will net us up to 6 additional draft picks (although more likely 4). I would let Uribe walk and ask Richie, for the sake of everyone in the organization and all that is holy, to please, please retire as a Giant and move into some kind of management job in the org.

I think we can count on one of Pucetas/MadBum/Alderson in the rotation next year. Sure relying on a rookie carries risk, but I think it would be worth it because it would mean converting Johnson’s salary into offense. The rookie would be the #5 starter and replacing Johnson’s numbers (or approximating them) wouldn’t be that hard. This would leave you with a rotation of:
1. Lincecum
2. Cain
3. Zito
4. Sanchez
5. Pucetas/Madbum/Alderson

Now, if you convert the expiring current salaries of Johnson, Winn and Molina into Holliday and Johnson (and yes, you might have to add to that), you’ve got yourself a this lineup:

CF: Rowand
SS : Renteria
LF: Holliday
1B: Johnson
3B: Sandoval
RF: Schierholtz
C: Posey
2B: Frandsen

That’s a team that could compete now and in the future.

I’m much more concerned with relying on Nick Johnson to stay healthy than one of the Pucetas/MadBum/Alderson to pan out. He’s always been very good when healthy so I’m sure there’s going to be bidders so I don’t see the Giants landing him short of a multi-year deal which is really scary considering he’s never played a full season.

Definitely would be awesome.

Agree that one of the three rookie pitchers would probably be OK to slot into the #5 spot, although the string of Zito-Sanchez-Pucetas/Bumgarner/Alderson could be pretty brutal on our bullpen. Boulder Skull would probably put Zito in the #2 spot to break up the righties and lefties. Sigh… Matt Cain, #3 pitcher.

Disagree with giving Posey the Burriss treatment. Or is it “Bococking” Posey? In any case, it worked with Sandoval, but counting on it to work every time is asking to get bit in the ass. Sign someone – anyone – like the corpse of Jason Veratek and let Posey compete – if he proves to be superhuman, well and good – just don’t PLAN on that happening.
