San Francisco Giants Link Dump
This shouldn't be my post for today, but SB Nation has a neat little widget for authors that helps for link roundups, and I thought I'd try it....

Not Giants-related, but pretty funny. Bonus: The bird was alright.

Chronicle story on Zack Wheeler
Pretty standard story meant for people who aren't draft nerds, but the introductory anecdote is worth the price of admission.
Bowker is ready to take a "Giant" step in his career
Hensley Meulens for Pope. Or MLB hitting coach, at least. This is a Fresno news report. Seriously, though, if five seconds of soundbite could ever make you wish for a coaching change, this is it.
The Giants make a Cinderella bid for the playoffs | Dodger Thoughts | Los Angeles Times
Jon Weisman looks at the Giants, unintentionally reminds me of "Spinderella" from Salt 'N' Pepa. I have a ton of respect for Weisman and his blog, even though his choice of team is painfully misguided, but I'm not sure about his ability to evaluate movies. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles not in the top ten Steve Martin movies? That's like putting "Let it Be", "Magical Mystery Tour", and "Yellow Submarine" above "Rubber Soul."

Tim Alderson was watching the draft on his computer?

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
And that’s very interesting about Bowker. I’d like to see if his improvement would carry over to the majors before anointing Meulens but I never thought a dude like Bowker could learn some semblance of plate discipline, so I am impressed.

I rooted for Bam Bam when he played here in AAA for the Clippers. I love seeing him succeed in the Giants org!
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
He’s seriously awesome. We talked for like a half hour about his career, coaching, and his work with the Dutch Antillies Baseball Academy and his efforts to get an RBI program going in the islands. Listening to him speak about baseball is a real treat.

Shameless self promotion. I wrote very briefly about RJ on Wednesday.
http://www.baycityball.com/2009/06/10/wednesday-plots-randy-johnson/
I think this graph is pretty cool. It’s Johnson’s BB/9 and SO/9 rates over his career. It’s pretty amazing how he turned his control around.

Randy Johnson is a freak of nature and not really a good comparison for anyone.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that pie > cake, that Bochy is endowed by his creator with certain undeniable traits, that among these are veteran man-love, a gigantic skull, and the pursuit of the double switch.

Holy crap
Johnson had a sustained k/9 over TEN?!?!?!?! JEEZUS

God that is unbelievable.
If a guy gets 14 Ks in a game, it’s a lead highlight. He FREAKING AVERAGED THAT FOR A WHOLE YEAR OMG

I'm pretty sure...
He didn’t pitch all 9 innings every game.

Also for fun, here’s his ERA+ by age. With a rolling average included.

From 30 to 40 his average ERA+ was 150 or better.

I'm thinkin'
this Randy Johnson guy might make the HOF, if he plays his cards right.

I like the Joseph pick. I like it even more than he seems eager to sign and get going for the Giants.

Since this is a weekend to relive the 80s, I’m watching 80s All Star Game highlights on MLB Network. Right now they’re airing the ’84 All Star Game at the ’stick.

Wheeler’s agent thinks that Zack was the best player available. What a shocker!

The Nationals really went off the board taking that Strasburg clown #1. It’s the biggest overdraft since Bryan Bullington at #1!

Did you hear wilbon saying he wouldn't draft him
because the Natinals have “too many other holes”.

Sort of like the “WE COULDNT HAVE SIGNED HAMMONDS AND TOMKO AND (rest of crappy veterans)” rationale.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
I would guess
that from the agent’s perspective, he was.

My top 10 Steve Martin movies
10. All of Me
9. Bringing Down The House
8. Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid
7. Parenthood
6. L.A. story
5. Pennies From Heaven
4. Planes, Trains & Automobiles (sorry Grant, but I love Martin and Candy)
3. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
2. Three Amigos
1. Roxanne (he should have at least been nominated for an Oscar)
I also liked “Little Shop of Horrors”, but don’t consider that a “Steve Martin movie”.
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
No My Blue Heaven?
And yeah Little Shop was like the SNL movie. It’s still hard to think that’s Steve Martin with the jet black greaser hairdo and singing about his sadistic dentistry. It’s not to say I don’t love the film.

Argh! I forgot "The Jerk"
That should be number two and move everything else down a notch.
10. Bringing Down The House
9. Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid

7. L.A. story
6. Pennies From Heaven
5. Planes, Trains & Automobiles (sorry Grant, but I love Martin and Candy)
4. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

2. the Jerk
1. Roxanne (he should have at least been nominated for an Oscar)
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
Good amendment
I’ve seen The Jerk close to 50 times and I still laugh every time. That movie taught me about my “special purpose”.
I think the entry implies that Grant thinks PT&A is deserving of a top 10 spot?
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
Where's the Man with Two Brains??!
That movie really freaked me out when I was a kid.

It just misses the top 10
“I never thought it could be like that. That was the most exciting sexual encounter – without actually having it – that I ever, almost had. "

Tremendous
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
I feel like for every movie like this I see, 3 more pop up. I’ll never get to all of the hilarious stuff out there.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
That review of the Giants’ draft on Beyond The Boxscore was lame
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
John Bowker is/was actively trying to be more patient?!!!!!
SWING THE BAT YOU BUFFOONN!!!! THE FIRST PITCH IS THE BEST PITCH YOU’LL EVER SEE IN YOUR LIFE
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all
If Dustin Pedroia played in Seattle, not many people would be talking about him.
Don't worry
As soon as he makes it up here again, Carney will set him straight.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
He should probably stay in AAA then
