Today's lineup

CF Rowand
RF Schierholtz
3B Uribe
1B Sandoval
LF Lewis
SS Frandsen
C Whiteside
2B Burriss
P Sanchez

I like this.  A lot.  I predict many runs and a victory.  Of course there are slight changes to be made, I'd rather have Renteria than Frandsen but I can't complain about Nate getting a start at all.  I like having Winn available off the bench, too.

Hopefully Sandoval tears it up some more and makes Bochy reconsider his clean-up guy.

Hopefully Nate gets 4 RBI (the ULTIMATE stat) so he can play again this month.

It’s better than anything w/ Molina in it. Hence, compared to the rest of the year, this is a great lineup.

so you’re saying that Eli Whiteside is better than Bengie Molina? Give me a break. I hate Bengie in the cleanup spot and he has been awful for the last month or so, but he had a big game last night and should have been out there today. We had our foot on the Snakes neck and we let them get up. As I mentioned in the post game thread, this was a game against a division opponent, and we don’t play intra division again until July 9th. That basically made this the most important game we’ll play till then, and we benched half of our regulars.

I was complaining more about the fact that there is now a belief that Bengie Molina is garbage. One bad month doesn’t erase the good job he’s done here over the length of his contract. If Posey was the backup I would be screaming to bench Molina as well, but when the backup is Eli Whiteside, the lineup is NOT better when Bengie is sitting.

I dunno, I don’t necessarily think he’s done, but when a catcher gets to be his age, I think you do need to start to consider the possibility that it could be the case. Especially when he’s gone from walking not enough to not walking at all.

He can’t hit second because, well, just because. Apparently that’s where Bochy plays the guys he thinks can’t hit.

I know Freddie Lewis is popular around here, but he’s been just awful this year. I don’t want to hear about his lack of opportunities to drive in runs, he’s had enough chances so that his actual total is a downright embarrassment. I really thought Freddie would take it to another level this year, and I was dead wrong. I resign from his fan club. I’ve torn up my membership card and returned the decoder ring. They can release him as far as I’m concerned and give his spot to Bowker.

No one is saying that he’s great. He’s definitely been below average this year. It’s just that when you have a bad catcher, a God-awful shortstop, a sub-par 1B platoon, and the worst 2B in the majors, it’s a little weird that everyone (in the Giants world, not in McC) is picking on the below average LF.

We could definitely do better than Lewis. We could also do a lot worse. That is not true for our 1B, 2B, and SS. Finding a huge improvement over Lewis, while possible, will be pretty hard, and expensive. That, too, is not true for our 1B, 2B, and SS.

It’s not that Lewis isn’t a problem, it’s just that right now we have much bigger ones.

2. this is more or less true, though their Isos are a lot closer than you’d think.
3. the first was an exceedingly empty, valueless .300. The second was pretty good, I’ll give you that. But Fred has had his share of months where he hit that well or better.

Lewis, projected Woba:
CHONE: .329

Schierholtz
CHONE: .348

I think Zips (update) is NOT using AAA stats… but in any case it’s close enough to take the better defender.

what I am saying

is that – based on projections – I do not see a CLEAR winner on offense between Nate and Fred. So, I would start whomever I thought had the better defense (I am not going to try to show stats for this – SSS for both of them).

They both hit LH, so it’s not like you can platoon them. I think the OF is OK. There’s nothing to be done about it this year anyway. It’s like worrying about Sanchez’ starts.

He hasn’t been awful. He’s just looked awful because he makes himself look awful. The production is still pretty much there (though this latest slump is very disheartening).

However, he hasn’t really been as good as he should have been.

I’m not particularly interested about talking about RBI. Yes, it’s bad, but add a measly three hits and he’s hitting something like .250/.350 with RISP and it doesn’t look nearly as bad. That stuff should even out over time.

He’s having problems right now, though. But the team has bigger ones.

He is a goner. The guy takes way too many called third strikes looking on fastballs, not to mention the ones he swings at and misses. Big leaguers hit those pitches! He does not look like one this year. Add on his defensive lapses and I don’t see him with a future in a position that teams stuff guys that can produce on offense

You can throw out his OBP from earlier this season, and how some ridiculous stat makes him look good on defense, but watch the guy. He was born to be a 6th outfielder for a team with an expanded roster after they are knocked out of the playoffs. Give someone else a chance because its obvious Kfred can’t

but I looked and .346/.389 is pretty wretched for a LF, even a good fielding one.
I would like to point out that his season is pretty much EXACTLY what Zips projected, minus about 13 points of ISO. So, if you turn like 2 2Bs into HRs it would be bang on.

The sad part is that he’s 3rd on the team on OBP for guys with >100 PAs.

by oldjacket on Jun 12, 2009 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But April still counts, right? As does his 2008 season.

That said, it’s getting ugly. For awhile, people were getting on him even though he was still above 100 in OPS+ (even when he was in the 105-110 range). But he’s getting down to dangerously low levels and, I dunno, I think he’s better than this but if he drops down to the 80s, it’s going to be hard to keep defending him. :\

it seems a bit misleading to say “he’s been replacement level since April”.

He had a 119 sOPS+ in April, then 107 in May. He sort of fluctuated between .770 and .810 OPS for most of May. The big part of his slump has been the past two weeks or so.

I think the difference here with Lewis and the others is that the Giants’ actually have options with left field. Bengie can slump forever and Eli Whiteside isn’t taking his job. Renteria can swing at a slider in the dirt and his bat can go flying into McCovey Cove and he’s not losing his job to Frandsen. However, with Lewis you have viable options. Nate Schierholtz is young, has had success in the minors and in his previous callups and hasn’t gotten a fair look. John Bowker is tearing it up at Fresno. It’s probably time to move on.

And I think it’s silly to ‘move on’ from a player because he’s in a slump. He’s lost like 60 points of OPS in a week or so. It’s a horrible slump. It happens.

by bradleybear on Jun 11, 2009 10:26 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

he’s definitely pressing. The first game back he was swinging at pitches that looked like they were going to hit him, and whenever he does hit the ball hard, someone makes a play on him. The two times he’s been called up (and the same with Guzman) it’s been pretty much “you have a couple of days to show us something or you’re going back to the minors.” It’s hard to play under that kind of pressure. Ishi returns today and if the Giants do the right thing and send Manny out and give Kevin the everyday job I think you’ll see a different player. He might even get his average up to the .150 mark!!

I’m still defending him! But right as all the criticism of him has come to a head, he’s absolutely tailspinned into his worst slump of the season. :\

Like I said, his OPS has gone from .790 on June 4th to .735 just a week later. It’s annoying because I’d thought he was coming out of his slump (he hit .303/.378/.576 from May 23rd to June 4th in 33 AB) but since then he’s gone one for his last seventeen. Random endpoints, I know, but I’m just pointing it out because I thought he was turning a corner a week ago and instead he’s gone in the exact opposite direction. :\

Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.

The way it looks to me, she’s still defending pretty much his entire season. I think the only thing she’s really poo-pooing at is one week of bad, bad baseball.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

Possibly Lewis suffers from the same disease that Rowand suffers

Placeinbatterorderitis: when a player can perform only when they are placed into a certain position in the batting order.

Sympthoms: coldness and inability to perform

Cures: Baby them and let them bat where they want in the batting order

Wonder where that would be with Lewis though? He has batted in almost every spot in the lineup and still strikes out a quarter of the time

I think it’s time to move Rowand to the #3 spot. I think it was Kuip I heard talking about the big deal everyone is making Rowand’s success in the leadoff spot, but he said it was likely a coincidence; he merely found his swing.

His bat would serve the team better in the #3 hole.

I like Sandoval in the 3 spot though. I’d rather have Rowand batting cleanup and Sandoval 3. Well I’d rather no one on this team bat cleanup but that’s a story for another day.. or rather a story for every day we have a game :(….

I only have a signature because I recognize everyone else by their sigs, not their usernames..

I don’t disagree. My main point was it’s time to move Rowand out of the leadoff spot and into a spot where he can get more RBI oportunities.
