Vrrrrrroom Vrrrrroom, Party Stah-tah....
So...Aaron Rowand. Huh; who would've guessed?
It was only a matter of time, wasn't it? ROWAND CONTINUES TO SWING THE BAT WELL !!!!11!!1, and I need to atone for posting NSFW Googled images of ball thongs and gushy happy fun-time prose about our beloved Gigantes.
We all know Rowand is streaky. It could be argued that he's been on an extended cold streak since he arrived. It could also be argued that he's fixed whatever was ailing him when Grant posted this, and he may have at last "arrived." All of this begs the question: If presented with a plausible trade scenario, what do we do with him? (OK, so maybe all of this only gently asks the question; I digress.)
Here are the vitals/indicators.
Bear in mind, he's due about $36M/3.
So, given the aforementioned, here's my poll. If you must mock my poll, please be gentle with regard to its length and/or size and/or ability to satisfy, for it knows not what it is.
(If this subject has already been broached, please accept my sincerest apologies.)

His improvement is mostly BABIP, but fangraphs data suggest he’s taking a few more pitches, and not hitting the ball on the ground as much. Anyone believe he might have changed his approach once he started batting leadoff?

I believe all irrational, unlikely things that make the Giants better: batting order shakeups, personal catchers, finding Jesus, etc

I think it’s the GRITTITUDE
Rowand’s bounce back has been pleasant. I just think he’s on one of his high BABIP tears.

Funny. Calling it “one of his high BABIP tears” makes it sound like it’s actually part of his skill set.

I think a high babip tear sounds like an unfortunate injury. An unfortunate injury that makes Rowand appear good at baseball.

Fewer ground balls mean that he should have a lower BABIP, not a higher one.

Well, that depends
If it is FB or LD that are replacing the GB

We’re talking about his supposed change of approach. Turning GB into LD isn’t a change of approach, it’s just hitting better. Turning GB into FB, on the other hand, might be a sign that he’s trying to put the ball in the air more often. I don’t think it is, since his numbers are still pretty similar to his career ones, and the sample size isn’t great, but in theory it could be.

Eh, I think he's just hitting better

Then it has nothing to do with hitting leadoff. Again, the question was whether hitting leadoff made Rowand change his approach, and whether that change of approach caused the improvement.

Regarding a change of approach, would it cause a reduction in ground balls if a batter started hitting the other way more often? It’s a classic stereotype that a player trying to hit for power (read: overswinging) will try to pull everything and roll over on a lot of pitches. How do you analyze a players spray chart over time?

By “change of approach” I was thinking that he knows that as a leadoff man his job is to get on base by any means necessary. This means he’ll be more receptive to the walk, or at least take a few more pitches; and as a result he’ll make better contact on the pitches he does swing at. But in fact he’s walking less as a leadoff man than he did lower in the order, so it’s almost certainly small-sample variation.

If you recall, Rowand did this last year when he hit like .340 through May. So he has done this before…
Congrats to my soul mate and birth brother Zach Wheeler on being drafted into greatness. Should I just buy my Wheeler jersey now, or wait till my next birthday?

Yeah, this is certainly not out of the ordinary
I’m just interested to see how long he can keep it up.

you have 7 options in your poll
and they are all wrong, or don’t answer the question.
The correct answer is somewhere between answers 1 and 3.
He should be traded if we get good value for him – regardless of contending status.
Note that if we trade him, we need to sign a FA CF for 2010 (OH THE IRONY), or extend Winn (regardless of “should” this WILL NOT happen for Winn to play CF… if it was even conceivable by Giants BRASS! they’d never have signed Rowand in the first place).
I suppose “resign Andres Torres” is technically an answer in CF, but none of Lewis, Schierholtz, Timpner, or Mike McBryde are going to do it. Eugenio Velez?
Who is going to available? Coco Crisp (option year that won’t be picked up)? Rick Ankiel?
Man, just keep him and hope that he keeps hitting.

As it was...
…I didn’t figure that making every imaginable scenario its own option would be the wisest choice.
Sharp cookie, you are, though; pointing out that the answer lay somewhere within the three valid options but definitely not the others.
Thank you for that.
