Open Day Two Draft Thread
It starts at 9:00 Pacific, I think. I'm hoping for Joe Shlabotnik from DeVry, and I'll complain loudly when we don't get him.

I didn't go to sleep until 4.
But I still like it. We need to remember that there are reasons the two hitters in the second and third rounds weren’t first rounders, and not to expect too much. Otherwise, very good draft.

LOOK OUT FOR EXPLODING LIGHT TOWERS IN 2013
Both our 2nd and 3rd round selections are described in their scouting reports as unrefined power bats with negligible defensive skills. The phrase “light tower power” featured prominently in both reports.
A. Filling an organizational need much?
B. “Light tower power” is a ridiculous phrase. Might as well say “exploding-sparkly-light tower-like-at-the-end-of-‘The Natural’ power”
C. Props for getting a good arm with the 1st round pick and then taking risks for a power bat with later selections, instead of overdrafting at #6.

Not to make a big deal out of it (because Wheeler’s probably going to turn out to be just great) but I was driving last night and following the draft on XM’s feed, and Kevin Goldstein was just finishing up a long harangue about how big a deal economics and signability were going to be in this first round (following the Orioles pick) with his opinion that the two guys who were going to go higher than their ability deserved because they were perceived as easy signs were Hobgood and Wheeler, when the Giant’s pick came through.
Again, I’m not throwing myself down the nearest stairs or anything, but in light of comments the organization’s been making the last couple of years, it was a tiny bit disheartening to hear them taking a guy who’s perceived value was so connected to his signability.

Wheeler over Matzek was probably about money, but Wheeler is a legit top 10 type of talent. It’s not like the Giants drafted Tony Sanchez.

True enough. In a way, it’s another Alderson/Porcello kind of thing. Although Wheeler’s also a high school pitcher whose polish seems to be the first thing scouts talk about, and that’s a combination that makes me a bit queasy as well.

But I did really like the 2nd and 3rd round picks, with the understanding Brute lists above. On the downside, I’m liking some of our division rivals drafts a bit more than I’m comfortable. Which isn’t a good feeling, especially given how amazing San Diego’s ’08 draft is starting to look.

Need to save $$$ for signing Dominican kids. I have no problem with not putting all your resources into one HS arm, Especially because Wheeler isn’t a huge drop off from Matzek (right now). More young players=more opportunities for lightning to strike with one big talent.

I’ve never seen either pitch, so I certainly don’t want ot sound overly definitive, but the scouting reports that I was hearing yesterday gives Matzek 3 plus or plus plus pitches with the makings of a 4th in his changeup, and recent upper 90s velocity on his fastball. Wheeler’s scouting report didn’t sound like the same category at all to me (lower 90s FB, and a second quality pitch in his slider).

Matzek seems virtually certain to go to college. With that in mind, a Wheeler pick seems fine.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
Where did this certainty come from? I don’t remember hearing anything about Matzek wanting to go to college until a couple days ago.
I think it’s very likely he’ll sign.
High school pitchers drafted in the top half of the first round are very unlikely to go to college. There’s just not that much to gain and a lot to potentialy lose.

That does make a lot of sense. If he does sign, I will be disappointed.

Mostly based on what he said in the interview after being drafted. He seem unenthusiastic about Colorado, and talked about how Oregon would let him play 1B if he went there.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
If we really can sign Wheeler for a lot cheaper than Matzek, I think it’s a good call. Wheeler evidently has the best fastball of the RH HS pitchers. It can get into the upper 90’s and looks like it has some significant sink to it. It has the potential to be a nasty pitch.
Matzek looks great, but if we can sign Wheeler for a few million less than Matzek, then I’d take Wheeler since they just seems so close. Take the money you save and spend it on some Dominican kids (like Wagner Mateo).
Wheeler + Mateo > Matzek alone.
Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?
re
“Wheeler + Mateo > Matzek alone”
I think I agree with that math, but I kinda doubt it will happen. I suspect Wheeler will be somewhere around 6 million b/c of last years bonuses. Mateo will be around 3.5 to 4, according to recent reports. I can’t see Matzek demanding 8.5 – 10, or getting it.
In the end, I think they end up getting the slightly inferior player and saving 2 million dollars.
I think the pick last year at #6 took < $3 million… I could be remembering that wrong, but I think Skipworth signed for a $2.3 million bonus. I doubt Wheeler will be that much higher. Much of the difference will depend on if Matzek really wants to go for > $7 million.
I agree that Mateo isn’t a sure thing. Baggs said this morning that the Giants don’t want to give him more than RafRod money b/c Mateo throws left handed and that that restricts the positions he can play.
Anyway, I liked Matzek better than Wheeler going into the draft. But high school pitching can be such a crap shoot, and the difference in talent between Matzek and Wheeler seems small enough, so I can see where they’re coming from. Also, the Giants seemed to genuinely like Wheeler; they were scouting him heavily even before the crazy pre-draft demands came to light.
Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?
The Tommy Joseph pick excites me...
I wonder if the org. will even really make a pretense of keeping him behind the plate or they’ll just decide we’re pretty set at catcher what with pablo and buster and move him to a corner spot. The former would give him more trade value and the organization more trade flexibility, the latter would probably be more practical in terms of maximizing our talent and getting him to the bigs more quickly. It’ll be interesting to see what happens there.

I think they keep him behind the plate as long as they can. That’s where he provides the most value and if they didn’t think he could potentially stay there, I doubt they would have taken him where they did. As a high schooler, there’s no need to rush him along and certainly nothing wrong with having a lot of good catchers in the system. He can move to first later on if he can’t stick behind the dish.

I’m not sure about that. It sounds like he’s pretty much of a project as a defensive catcher, and his potential value comes from his power bat. It may be that his value is as a corner IF or OF and sticking with his shaky glove at C is just holding that potential production value back.

Goodwin had a very successful summer in which he participated in both the Aflac All-American Classic and the Under Armour Classic, being named the MVP of the Aflac game. Goodwin is the type of player that makes it very obvious when watching him that the game of baseball comes very naturally to him. He does a lot of little things well, and has four legitimate tools, lacking power as the only tool to make him the always coveted five-tool talent. And despite his lack of power, Goodwin will surprise you with his pop from time to time. Most of his power goes to the gaps, and his 6.5 speed allows him to leg out plenty of extra base hits. His bat is made for contact, as he excels at putting the ball in play and going with pitches to drive the ball up the middle and the other way. He is extremely fast out of the box, and gets down the line to first base as a left-handed hitter as well as anyone, allowing him to be a threat on infield grounders and bunt plays. His speed makes him an additional threat on the basepaths, and his overall offensive package profiles perfectly for a leadoff hitting centerfielder. In the outfield he takes good routes on fly balls and has plenty of speed to cover a lot of ground in a hurry. His arm is also a plus tool, and overall he profiles in a very similar fashion to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen, or on a more complimentary scale, Kenny Lofton. The icing on the cake is his character, with a great personality and strong leadership qualities. His athleticism and speed allows him to excel in football as well, although his future lies on the baseball diamond. He has committed to North Carolina, a university that has a knack for not letting too many of their recruits slip away, although Goodwin has the talent right now to be considered a legitimate first-rounder.

Keyvius Sampson
Keyvius Sampson –
Forest HS; Ocala, FL. 6′1, 180… fastball in 90-92 range… has hit 95… excellent mechanics… curve in mid-60s.. committed to FSU…
5/27: BA Draft Tracker: Athletic with three-pitch mix pushing him into first 2 rounds…
5-29 John Sickles: Keyvius Sampson: Florida HS: STRENGTHS: Athleticism, 90-93 MPH fastball, curveball and changeup show potential. WEAKNESSES: Mechanics and command need work, general high school pitcher risk, Florida State commitment could raise price tag, velocity is inconsistent, smallish at 6-1, 180.. PROJECTION: Has been mentioned anywhere from the supplemental round into the third or fourth round, but if he falls too far college will beckon.
Fr. http://www.perfectgame.org/ – Keyvius Sampson is a 2009 RHP/OF with a 6’1’’, 185 lb. frame from Ocala, FL who attends Forest HS. Sampson is a very athletic RHP. He uses a 3/4 arm angle and a fast arm as his fastball works in the low nineties and topped out at 93 mph in the Metrodome. He stays online in his delivery and locates his fastball very well. He has more than just a fastball as he compliments his low 90’s heat with good curveball with bite and also a change up. He projects well with his electric arm and athleticism and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Keyvius in the upper 90s some day. He also shows ability at the plate and made solid line drive contact. One of the top 2009 arms. Aflac All American
Fr. http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/ – Ocala Forest High School righty Keyvius Sampson came into the spring ranked #30 overall for the 2009 draft by PGCrosschecker.com. Committed to Florida State University, scouts have also been hot on his trail.
I drove up to northern Florida to watch Sampson pitch on Friday night. Forest High School is tucked away in a forested area of Ocala, about nine miles off of I-75. A beautiful high school with a stunning baseball/softball complex, it provided an ideal setting to watch one of the nation’s top pitchers.
I’d seen Sampson before at various showcase and summer tournaments like our annual WWBA event in Jupiter. But this was my first look at him with his high school team.
In the bullpen, it was obvious Sampson has a very quick arm. He’s loose and long in the back with a mild amount of shoulder strain. He doesn’t rock back to generate momentum; his shoulders are level to the ground throughout his delivery and he lands slightly across his body throwing from a high three-quarter slot.
Sampson’s body is very athletic looking, but it is not a typical pitcher’s body. The closest major league comparison that I could come up with (and that other scouts agreed on) was Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt. Aside from being African-American and probably two inches taller (Sampson appears a little over 6-0, 180, while Oswalt is most likely 5-10 despite being listed 6-0), they fill out a uniform much the same. Sampson has a small waist but is well-built in the hips and has sturdy but slender legs. His upper-half is lanky.

Yep. I think we paid him the equivalent of a 2nd round bonus. I would love to see the Giants do this more often. It seems like a good way to quickly add talent to the org. The Red Sox were able to add Lars Anderson this way a few years ago.
Actually we paid him 1,000,000 which in ‘02 was greater than a lot of 1st rounders. I agree, it was a great flyer to take at that point in the draft. Rather a high upside young guy than you’re typical 4th year college seniors at that point in the draft.

And while Belt may not play a role on the nation’s best pitching staff, he may have the nation’s best opposite-field power. While many left-handed power hitters pull the ball to right field, Belt thrives in driving doubles, and sometimes home runs, to left.

Jason Stoffel, Arizona
The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Stoffel looked like a no-doubt first-rounder entering the season, and while he still flashes a fastball that sits 93-95 mph and a slider that can be unhittable, he has been inconsistent. His fastball and slider have straightened out and lost a few ticks at times this season, and his numbers this season aren’t those of a dominant reliever. But Stoffel became Arizona’s career saves leader this season with 26 and counting, passing Mark Melancon. Scouts who have seen him good put Stoffel in the same class as Arizona’s first-round pitchers from last season, Ryan Perry and Daniel Schlereth. He’s a fierce competitor but falls into the trap of many relievers in pitching to the situation. He pitches better in close games, and can lose focus when he comes in with a cushion. Some question Stoffel’s decision to pass on pitching in the Cape Cod League or for Team USA the past two summers.

Interesting
He was actually drafted by the Giants back in 2006 in the 29th round, according to his bio on the Western Carolina website
Started all 56 games in which he appeared, making the transition from infield to outfield at mid-season … Made 35 starts at second base and one at third before moving to centerfield for 20 starts … Hit a career-best .367 (95-for-259) to rank fourth among the regular starters with a team-high tying 22 doubles, two triples and a career-high nine home runs … His 95 seasonal base hits ranked tied for eighth all-time in school history … Concluded the season on a 15-game hitting streak which included 11 multi-hit games with six-straight to end the season … Finished second on the team in both multiple hit games with 33 and multi-RBI outings with 15 … Stole a career-best 24 bases to rank third on the squad … Matched his single-game career-best with four base hits three times during the season including in wins over Appalachian State, Eastern Kentucky and Samford … Drew a career-high four walks in a road win over UNC Asheville … Was a preseason second team All-SoCon selection at second base by the league’s head coaches.

Scouting Report
With a 6.75 sixty yard time. Karl (Gus) was one of the fastest prospects we had at Wake Forest this past August. An ’09 grad that is 6’0" 175lbs and still maturing physically, he has great potential. Showed really good instincts in the outfield and had great range. Has a strong throwing arm that was as accurate as it was strong. On the mound he showed pretty good mechanics for an ’09. His fastball peaked at 85 MPH. Has a good quick bat with good rhythm to it. Loads early and stays behind the ball. Good power and consistent contact.

Story behind his name
equoyah" has a much more regal history than any identity taken from Southern California beach culture.
His full name is Sequoyah Trueblood Stonecipher. He was named for his great grandfather on his mother’s side n Sequoyah Evonne Trueblood, a Choctaw and Chickashee Indian from Oklahoma.
In Oklahoma and parts of Arkansas, Sequoyah is a familiar name for an historic figure. In the early 1800s, Sequoyah created the Cherokee syllabary and taught thousands of Native Americans to read and write their language.
"Everyday people ask me about my name," said Stonecipher, whose father’s German surname coincidentally has an Indian ring to it. "I think it’s a cool name."

BA on Brandon Belt, whom they list as a LHP
Though Texas won the Big 12 regular-season and conference championships and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA baseball tournament, it has a young team with few enticing 2009 draft prospects. Besides Wood, the only other Longhorn with a chance to go in the first 10 rounds is first baseman Brandon Belt. He led Texas with a .338 average and eight homers heading into the super-regionals, though scouts don’t love his set-up. He bats out of a deep crouch and cuts himself off, reducing his power. A disciplined lefthanded hitter with the size (6-foot-5, 205 pounds) to drive the ball, he led Cape Cod League champion Harwich with five homers last summer. He uses more of an opposite-field approach and doesn’t turn on pitches consistently. He’s a good defensive first baseman with average speed. Belt has been drafted twice previously, in the 11th round out of high school by the Red Sox in 2006 (as a lefthanded pitcher) and in the same round out of San Jacinto JC by the Braves in 2007.

Brandon Belt and Wasserman are 1B, there’s been talk of Joseph, Dominguez, and Walsh moving there. But there’s also talk of Dominguez in the OF, and I bet Walsh won’t sign.

Does anyone else have a feeling that Wheeler isn’t going to pan out?
I was lying in bed last night and reflecting upon the team and its future and something in my gut told me that he was going to be a bust. I hope I am wrong. It was just one of those weird instinctual feelings that everyone gets from time to time.

I’m not so worried. There isn’t the pressure there used to be for him to be pushed and succeed. Lincecum, Cain, and Zito aren’t going anywhere, and with Bumgarner and Alderson getting close, Wheeler can take time to develop.

Wheeler v. Matzek v. 22nd round boredom
First post ever, so feel free to tell me if I’m totally wrong. Not that this board doesn’t share its opinions.
What I kinda found interesting about Wheeler v. Matzek that I haven’t seen written about is what I’d view as the higher upside potential of Wheeler…presuming Wheeler learns to throw a proper changeup. I watched a little video on both before draft, but most of this is my take on the scouting reports and some thoughts on watching power pitchers go through the minors over the years.
Matzek sounds like he has the full arsenal. Good fastball. Very good slider. Very good curveball. Good fastball + slider + curve is overpowering in high school, and the combination should do well in the minors. He’ll be in the majors pretty quickly.
Wheeler has two + pitches – very good fastball that’s harder than Matzek and moves more, and a slurve breaking ball thingie that’s 15-18 mph slower and apparently murder on right handers.
Where the two are really different is the changeup. Matzek is extremely unusual for a high school/college power pitcher in already having one that’s decent – 10-12 mph under the fastball, same speed as slider. Wheeler on the other hand nominally throws a change, but it’s only got a 4-5 mph differential.
Makes sense. If you can hit 98 mph because the GM of the Giants is in the crowd, how many high schoolers are going to be able to catch up? Most power pitchers never bother with a change until they get to the majors and discover they can’t blow guys away with hard stuff all the time; in general, the only guys with really good changes coming out of high school and college are the marginal 80s fastball tossers that have to have it to survive.
Great example: Timmy’s MLB debut (versus Hamels), where I was sitting behind home plate and wondering with someone else why Molina and/or Lincecum kept calling for cheese after cheese…since the Phils showed him rather rudely that major leaguers can hit a straight high 90s fastball if there wasn’t anything else involved. One of the things that makes Timmy so special (versus Cain and Schmidt before him, who took far longer to do so) is that he realized the need for a changeup based on the above, developed an incredibly effective one in an insanely quick period of time, and I bet (and on this board someone would probably know) throws it more often than his breaking stuff now.
So basically, Matzek had 4 pitches he could get kids out with in high school – rather unfair to the competition. Wheeler only had 2, and did pretty darned well.
No idea if Wheeler is going to be able to develop an effective change, but if he does with a fastball with movement…look out. Matzek may make the majors more quickly, but I can see why the Giants took Wheeler over Matzek for more reasons than signability. More work to be done, but likely greater upside if he really does work out and they’ve got the pitching depth in the minors to let him have the time to do so.
Ok, back to work.
That sounds reasonable, but really, I don’t have enough information about the guys to be sure one way or another.
by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jun 10, 2009 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions
the only thing I know about him
is that his 4 seam fastball sits around 94-96 and his 2 seamer is about 91-93
I wouldn’t say wheeler has higher upside/potential/ceiling. What I would say from your little snippet is he was more room to improve or more spcae between his currnet place and his ceiling.
Just b/c Matzek has 4 pitches doesn’t mean he has less upside
Minor White > Ansel Adams
by say hey nation on Jun 10, 2009 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions
that seems like a plausible comparison
Scouts raved about Matzek’s polish, especially Keith Law who said he had the polish of a big leaguer, and talked about how quickly he can move, it seemed the scouting reports on Wheeler were more raving about his raw stuff, so it is probably true that Wheeler has further to go. Given the Giants penchant for scouting and developing young pitchers, they might very well see more upside in Wheeler and if so, I’m sure they are confident they can help him reach it.
As far as signability, we’ll never know how big of a factor it really was, but I think we should give the Giants the benefit of the doubt based on their recent history of willingness to spend money in the draft and in Latin America. It would be odd if they all of a sudden decided to go cheap yesterday afternoon.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Jun 10, 2009 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions
I’ve read here and there that Wheeler is the uber-projectable type, while I’ve seen a few publications say that Matzek’s ceiling is of at #2.
Of course, this is all speculation. But it does seem like just based on fastballs movement and projectability based on body type, Wheeler wins. Matzek brings the whole package, and as pointed out above, can throw the change already. If Wheeler develops a good change, then he could potentially be more dominant than Matzek. It just seems like Matkez is far more likely to reach his ceiling.
Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?
I basically agree.
Matzek has topped out higher with more regularity than Wheeler though (the 98 with Sabean there may be a fast gun)…and may sit a tick higher. Wheeler’s fastball is indeed fantastic. His change is projectable too, so it should be interesting.

Jason Stoffel RHP Jr. R-R 6-2 215 Arizona Agoura, Calif. Never drafted 9/15/1988
SCOUTING PROFILE (3/1): The back-end of Arizona’s pitching staff was so deep and talented in 2008 that it featured two first-rounders, lefthander Daniel Schlereth and righthander Ryan Perry, as set-up men. The closer role belonged to the dominating Stoffel-an even surer bet to be a first-rounder this year than Schlereth and Perry were a year ago. Between them, the trio worked in 99 games while striking out 227 in 178 innings and limiting opponents to a .193 average. Stoffel fanned 79 hitters in 48 innings on his own while going 4-2, 3.00 and saving 13 games.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound righthander is a true power-armed pitcher He is very intimidating on the mound with a fastball that sits in the mid-90s and has topped out to 98. He complements his fastball with a hard, downer curveball that projects to be a potential put-away pitch down the road as well. His changeup is also a plus pitch. Though he has a solid three-pitch mix normally found in a starter, Stoffel is ideally suited to close, both now and in the big leagues, because he has a nasty, aggressive demeanor on the mound and a no-fear, pressure-resistant makeup. He also has an exceptional feel for pitching. Though he wasn’t drafted in 2006 out of a California high school and was overshadowed in the process by teammate Robert Stock, now at USC, Stoffel has made greater strides in college and more than likely will be the superior draft of the two. Though his body is fairly mature, he has a smooth, easy delivery and the ball comes out of his hand with little effort.-ALLAN SIMPSON
UPDATE (5/15): Of all the college players who seemed like sure bets to go in the first round this year, Stoffel may have taken the most-pronounced dip. Not only has the first round apparently passed him by, but it may be a push to pop him by the third round-and only by a team that saw him on the right day. Without Perry and Schlereth as his front men this year, Stoffel simply didn’t perform to the same level or flash the same dominant stuff that was so evident in 2008. He made 39 appearances for the Wildcats and went 2-1, 4.67 with 11 saves, but he struck out only 55 in 54 innings, while walking 25.
He showed flashes of his former stuff with a fastball that would occasionally reach 94-96 mph, but it was more commonly in the low-90s (especially on the second day of back-to-back outings) and flat as the sinking action that defined the pitch in 2008 was missing. His breaking pitch, a hard, power curve with depth and a true swing-and-miss pitch a year ago, became more of a loopy, run-of-the-mill breaking ball. Stoffel’s command was not as crisp, either, as he made a habit of missing his target by 2-3 inches-and became more hittable. He often worked more than the standard one inning associated with the closer role as the Wildcats didn’t have a reliable arm this spring to get to him, but the bottom line is he was nowhere near as dominant this season.

Brandon Belt 1B/LHP Jr. L-L 6-5 205 Texas Lufkin, Texas Braves ’07 (11) 4/20/1988
SCOUTING PROFILE (3/1): Summer-league championship teams seem to have a way of finding Belt. A year after earning series MVP honors for leading Coppell to the 2007 Texas Collegiate League title, Belt played a vital role in leading Harwich to its first Cape Cod League championship in 23 years. He came on strong at the end to top the Mariners in homers (5) and RBIs (25) during the regular season, while batting .248. He also topped Texas in RBIs during the spring, with 65, while batting .319. Belt has good extension in his swing and quickness in his hands to generate significant bat speed, and he can drive balls to both gaps, and even foul pole to foul pole, consistently. He also has excellent barrel awareness and a solid two-strike approach. But even as he led the Longhorns in RBIs as a sophomore, he homered only six times as he has a somewhat unorthodox stance at the plate, with a lot of movement in his body when he swings, that can result in his cutting off his stroke early, limiting his power output.
He still has plenty of room to fill out his long, lanky frame to add strength, but his immediate challenge will be to revamp his follow through to add more pull power, and his prospects for the 2009 draft may depend on it. The versatile Belt spent most of his summer at Harwich in right field, but had been mostly a first baseman and pitcher of significant consequence to that point in his career. Twice an unsigned 11th-round draft pick, he was selected by the Boston Red Sox in 2006 out of Texas’ Lufkin High for his prowess as a pitcher; a year later, he was taken in the same round by the Atlanta Braves as a first baseman after hitting .421-9-57 out of San Jacinto JC, though he also went 7-2, 2.82 in a secondary role as a pitcher. He transferred to Texas as a sophomore.
Belt was the top-ranked high-school pitching prospect in Texas as a junior when he threw in the low-90s, but his velocity fell off as a senior and never has returned consistently to its previous level. He had setbacks along the way that were attributed to elbow and biceps tendonitis. His prowess as a pitching prospect is now essentially in neutral after he worked just 18 innings (1-0, 4.08, 2 SV), all in relief, last spring at Texas, and pitched in just two games for Harwich during the summer after arriving on the Cape with a tender arm that caused him to be shut down initially.
But Belt continued to throw bullpen sessions for the Mariners and was rewarded with a late-season start, where he amazingly struck out the side in the first inning on his way to pitching to the minimum 15 hitters in a five-inning stint. He worked with a fastball, curve and changeup, and allowed one hit, but promptly picked that player off first base. His changeup is considered his best current pitch, and he’ll need to re-establish the velocity in his fastball to be considered a factor as a pitcher in the future. At this point in his development, his upside is clearly as a hitter. He is also a superior defender at first with exceptionally soft hands. Though he has the arm strength for right field and surprisingly covers a lot ground in the outfield with below-average speed, he lacks the smooth actions to play there on an everyday basis.—ALLAN SIMPSON
UPDATE (5/15): Belt had a strong second half to the 2009 season to lead the Longhorns in each of the triple-crown categories (.342-8-37) as the NCAA Division I playoffs began, although those numbers would hardly draw attention on most other teams in the 64-team field. Despite being the tournament’s national No. 1 seed, Texas was hardly known for its offensive prowess this spring. Belt’s hitting tools and hitting style have remained relatively stagnant over the last two years at Texas, despite his obvious athletic talent. That has caused some scouts to wonder whether Belt might even be drafted this year. His defensive ability at first base is a strong positive. He didn’t pitch an inning for Texas this spring and that part of his package is very definitely on hold.—DR
