I think he was probably a perfectly fine option at the back end of a rotation who could have been valuable in that Hennessey / Correia role, who just happened to be hit by a lot of bad luck and also hitters.

Two things

1. This makes it seem even stupider to be wasting a spot on Conor Gillaspie when he won’t be ready for a few years. All this so we could call him up to hang out last September?

2. Does Velez really have more potential than a lefty with shitty luck? He better not become Jamie Moyer and pitch against us for like another 30 years

We’ve let the Giants off too easily for that alleged “handshake” business with Gillaspie. Does anyone really believe that he would have refused to sign? Does anyone still believe it would have been any great loss if he had? It was a stupid move, though admittedly not as stupid as half a dozen other things the Giants did last year.

by Evan on Jun 2, 2009 4:34 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wasn’t much of a fan of it & have no idea whether we could have signed him without it, i’d guess we would have.

Yes, Gillaspie isn’t the best prospect ever but simply throwing away a supplemental pick would have been stupid. I can only imagine the uproar on here if we’d given it away, especially with it being a case of instead worrying over losing one of Aurilia, Bocock, Holm, Whiteside, Pichardo, etc instead.

I think it’s only in the actual first round, so they would have lost the pick since they got Gillaspie in the supplemental round.

You’re correct, there’s no compensation if you don’t sign supplemental picks so we would have lost it if we hadn’t signed him. I believe you can also get some compensation if you don’t sign draftees in the following few rounds as well.

And what about the Whiteside maneuver?

Because they sent Holm down and then immediately needed a backup catcher, they had to call up Whiteside. They moved Lowry to the 60-day DL to make room for Whiteside on the 40-man roster, which used up their last bit of roster flexibility. Otherwise, they could’ve used Lowry’s spot for Pichardo.

Now, maybe Giants management is just completely done with Steve Holm and was ready to give Whiteside a look anyway. I kinda hope that’s the case, even though I think Holm has been a perfectly serviceable backup, because the alternative is that they just shot themselves in the foot through a complete lack of foresight.

They sent Holm down, and Pablo got hurt the same day. The only way for Holm to come back up to the bigs was if they used the DL for Pablo, thereby missing 15 days of him. Injuries happen.

I also don’t think Misch will be…well…Misched. He’s not good.

by tyrannoman on Jun 2, 2009 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand that...

…but had they thought, gee, we should have a backup catcher, and kept Holm, they would not have had to make that move. This is why 99% of teams keep a dedicated backup catcher on their roster. Thus my reference to a complete lack of foresight.

Meet my new son: Sundrendy Windster, coming soon to a minor league near you.

by EliminateMe on Jun 2, 2009 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the possibility of Pablo getting hurt was pretty slight and not something you build all your plans around.

There was a lot of panic about Holm not being on the big team when the season started and I can’t remember any circumstances where the sky fell because our only backup catcher was Pablo.

Now we have Whiteside instead of Holm as the backup catcher. I don’t know if the net effect is even measurable.

If you’re implying that the Whiteside/Holm affair forced us to lose Misch, I’d argue that cutting Bocock or Aurilia would have been fine by me if keeping Misch was a priority.

My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman

by Goofus on Jun 2, 2009 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Obviously, though, management doesn’t hold the same opinion of Aurilia as some of us do…or of Bocock, for that matter. But clearly the Whiteside/Holm affair did cost the team a 40-man roster spot and necessitated that someone get cut when Pichardo’s supension ended. It’s not so much who they picked to cut as the fact that they had to do it at all.

I mean, your SS is also unlikely to get hurt, so why carry a backup utility infielder? Or a fourth OF, for that matter? Let’s just have a starting 8 and a bench full of DHs to use as pinch hitters. The chance of any one player getting injured is fairly small, but across the whole starting lineup it’s a lot more likely, which is why you normally have backups for all those positions on your roster.

Meet my new son: Sundrendy Windster, coming soon to a minor league near you.

by EliminateMe on Jun 2, 2009 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is silly logic. Pablo was serving as the backup catcher (and has been doing a fine job) until he was hurt. Therefore, they were carrying a backup catcher.

If you want to argue the merits of keeping Misch over BoRilia, that’s fine. But using a players versitility to open another spot on the 25-man roster dosen’t bother me at all.

by tyrannoman on Jun 2, 2009 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I really hope that they didn’t want to give Whiteside a look instead of Holm. I’ve always thought Holm could be a catcher in the Yorvit Torrealba mold, he should get a chance. Whiteside…he’s been passed on by a team other than the Giants, so I trust the other team’s judgement.

I’d rather have Misch in the bullpen than Brandon Medders. His stats in relief in the minors are pretty nice.

by xanthan on Jun 2, 2009 5:12 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

His stats in relief in the majors before this year have been pretty good too. 38.0 IP, 2.13 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, albeit with a low k-rate.

It’s strange in fact that he’s got a pretty decent K/9 when he starts in the majors but a much lower one when he’s a reliever, despite being more successful in that role. I’m guessing that’s a SSS phenomena.

Well he might, but ‘taint gunna be this year. Ya know? Why’s he on the roster now? Because he was there last year and they forgot to take him off? They are afraid someone else will get him? It’s a good thing Ginats brass isn’t in charge of anything serious. Can you imagine? The new bay bridge would take you from Oakland to Emeryville.

I guess I don’t get your point. What difference does it make if they DFA him now or if they did last year?

I mean, you can argue that Bocock, or Aurilia, or another name on the 40 man should’ve been DFA’d and that would be fine, but it seems to me you wanted them to DFA Misch last year rather than now, and that seems immeterial to me.

BTW, sorry about the cheap shot.

by tyrannoman on Jun 3, 2009 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dissapointing to see him DFA’d as i quited liked him. He’s probably never going to be a great player but felt he could have been a decent reliever & also being of use as an occasional fifth starter.

I’m certainly not going to bemoan his loss & it’s unlikely to be a big issue, but there seem to be better candidates to remove from the 40 man roster.
