Joe Martinez?
Sorry if it has been mentioned somewhere but I haven't heard anything in a while about Joe Martinez. Does anybody know about his condition and what the plans are for him? I wouldn't mind seeing him be given a chance to compete with Sanchez for the fifth spot. Sanchez has way more upside but he is beginning to remind me a lot of Oliver Perez in a boy-this-is-agonizing kind of way. I realize Joe is going to need a while to build up arm strength again under the best of circumstances but it wouldn't hurt Sanchez to be looking over his shoulder at someone.

Every Thursday they were doing a check up on him, once he passed one then he could get back into baseball.
Hope he is back into baseball soon though.

What kind of check? See if everything’s healed?
Proud father of Barry Zito. As long as he keeps throwing strikes, that is.

Now that I think of it… there’s not really any other check one can make. That was dumb :\

Is this to see if his mind quits?

Last I heard – today during the pre-game – they are not expecting him to resume physical activity until June. So I’d guess he’d need some time after that to get into “game shape”?

In all fairness and seriousness
I understand that this can be pretty hard to come back from. I’ve heard that it is hard to throw inside without imagining the ball coming straight back at you. I suspect that there is a lot of mental and emotional care in how they are treating him.
Hate to get too sappy but to me it’s a success story if he pitches with confidence again. I believe he can do it but I don’t think it’s ever a given with things like this.

I’m afraid that would be the worst part, the mental part of it.

I do, too. I imagine that most nights before he falls asleep Joe sees that line drive screaming back up the middle at him.

I don't either
Toofruss is a play on toothless, and is a nickname given me a long time ago before I got my teeth fixed. I lost them pitching in a pick up game when I was 17. I don’t remember throwing the pitch. All I remember is that the previous batter popped out, and then I opened my eyes to everyone looking down at me and saying “Oh shit!!”, and other variations of the same. It is very freaky.

He will be all right
He’s a tough kid from South Orange N.J. He’s probably been hit in the head before.

The mean streets of South Orange…good think he’s not from the idyllic East Orange.
