Oh, and also: are these the same Dodgers fans that brought syringes to the games to mock Bonds? Because, um, kettle and all that.

Eric Karros is doing an awful McCarver impression.

Wow, that didn’t take long.
Osiris, lord of the dead, and relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants.
WTF is Bochy's obsession with Velez?
Goddamnit Bochy, why not use Nate?!
Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.
Nate stands in the on-deck circle. Nothing more.

Aren’t you aware that left-handed hitters cannot hit pitchers who are also of the left-handed persuasion while playing the game of base-ball?
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
you know, I honestly can’t remember why Eugenio Velez is on our starting roster

He’s also seen 19 of the 71 pitches thrown today by Stults.

magic pixie dust? He’s probably our 3rd best offensive player.
Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.
You don’t honestly think that Lewis deserves to be singled out amongst all of these losers?
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
He’s playing roughly as well as he has for his entire career. Should we have really expected more based on a bunch of baloney about “aggressiveness”?
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
Pro tip : no runners on base in front of you and you are not hitting as a hart of the oder.

I get the feeling Will wants Lewis to be more like The Ripper (Jack Clark). No doubt the Giants could desperately use another Ripper. ( The Ripper was not always a good glove btw.)And Lewis is just not that kind of player.
But Lewis is still valuable and the type of play the Giatns have had trouble getting for almost 40 years – lead off.
Where is my beer & chili dog?
I, and others, have explained quite a few times why we think Lewis is above average defensively. I don’t remember ever seeing you make a counter-argument. You just ignore what we say, and then announce the next day that Lewis can’t play LF.

What would you rather him do than get on base? That’s kind of the goal.

C'mon
if he hit even 1 he woudl have more ribbies. He is a singular dimension dude. If getting on base I would like him to steal.
This. No one on the team is going to drive in many runs with the HR. Singling out Lewis for it doesn’t make much sense, especially when he, unlike several others, actually does contribute a useful skillset.
Osiris, lord of the dead, and relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants.
RBI’s + R’s:
Fred “not the solution” Lewis: 16.
Pablo “heart of the order” Sandoval: 19.
RISP:
Unclutch strike-taking Fred Lewis: .214/.450/.286.
Super-clutch mega-hacker Pablo Sandoval: .226/.333/.323.
Fred’s basically one good game away from tying him.

I just don’t agree. He makes too many mistakes. Can’t pronounce names correctly. If he were a Rockies announcer and said Travis Ishigawa last season like he did, all you would think he was an idiot.
Rockies announcers are idiots.
So, you have one example of a mistake, and he makes “too many”. Every announcer (except maybe Jon Miller) is going to make a few mistakes
by www.westcoastbias.com on May 9, 2009 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions
Kuiper had one glaring mistake last season in AZ. Matt Cain struck out to lead off and Kuiper said that was the inning.
BTW, is there any non-Giants announcer you think is OK?
I’m not into keeping track of mistakes, and more interested in announcers who can maintain a good flow to the game and chemistry with their broadcast partner.
The marlins and cubs TV guys are pretty good.

Cubs used to be good but since the team told them to be the closer style of Ron Santo they’ve dropped off a bit.
Kuiper is the only one I do hate on this team. Flemming to me is “eh” but I like Miller and Krukow (JT doesn’t count. He’s not there enough but he’s boring).
I don’t think the Cubs TV guys are anything close to Santo (I hate Santo, that’s why I made sure to mention only the TV guys and not the radio) . I can watch a Cubs and Marlins broadcast and not be sucked into the home team hype

Cubs are starting to get into the “we” thing a bit too much now then a couple years ago. Kasper and Brenly were much better in 2007 then now.

So
I read Baggs’ blog. He says the Giants are considering moving Pablo to 1st. What you all think?? That would mean Uribe plays every day at 3rd but Ishi wouldn’t be in the lineup anymore.
does that mean aurillia can stop playing?

WTF. How would that help anything? We’d be taking Pablo’s okay defense and tossing it to a position of less importance, and we’d be replacing TI’s shitty bat and good glove with Uribe’s shitty bat and shitty glove. I think I would have a stroke if Uribe got to play every day.

I don’t think I’ve ever done that. It’s far from perfect, but you can definitely learn something about player from a year and half’s worth of UZR. Basically, just use it as evidence instead of proof.
Adoptive parent of Noah Lowry. Because he was awesome once, and, goddammit, he shall be awesome once again!
I hope.
What are the facts? Not facetious, so don't be snotty. Where are "all the defensive stats"?
Your move.
Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit... Maybe.
UZR had him at 7.3 runs above average last year.
You can read about UZR here and here. It’s long and boring, though. Basically, UZR uses play by play data that includes where the ball was hit to, how hard it was hit, at what angel it was hit (as in line or high fly), etc. Based on that, and after it has adjusted for park dimensions, it determines whether or not an average fielder would have made the play (by comparing it to plays made around the league). If a player made a play that an average player wouldn’t have made, he saved a hit, and vice versa. Hits are then translated into runs based on the formula that every hit is worth .78 runs (or something like that, I think).
Adoptive parent of Noah Lowry. Because he was awesome once, and, goddammit, he shall be awesome once again!
I hope.
Incidentally, I have never said he is bad.
Not overall. I have said that he is “off” and it could well be that he is league-average as a defender. But he has made a lot of misplays this year that an above-average LF would not.
Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit... Maybe.
Yeah, sorry
I’ve just seen so many people say that Lewis is bad over the last few weeks, it’s kind of a touchy subject.
Adoptive parent of Noah Lowry. Because he was awesome once, and, goddammit, he shall be awesome once again!

Oh, I don’t have any. I was just responding to wilriv’s “stats be damned” comment.
Osiris, lord of the dead, and relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants.
Neither alone. But statistics should be taken into account. I like Fred Lewis because he takes a lot of pitches and gets on base. I agree with you that his defense is questionable.
Osiris, lord of the dead, and relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants.
Screw stats
As someone who’s watched quite a few baseball games, I find it surprising that a serious baseball fan could disagree that having good range in the OF is much more important than having good hands. As someone who has a watched quite a few games, I’m also surprised that a serious fan like you could so easily forget just how bad the average LF is.
Adoptive parent of Noah Lowry. Because he was awesome once, and, goddammit, he shall be awesome once again!
I hope.
Good lord, I’ll admit I’m not watching the game, but it’s getting to the point where any time a ball drops in LF for a hit, it’s a ball that could have been caught/that Fred should have caught/etc. I mean, this might be true, but damn.

Before the game Dodgers announcer Charlie Steiner and Rick Monday knew about the defensive lapses of Fred Lewis. Monday said any ball hit to LF is “an adventure” and he would be right
I agree Lewis glove work is off. But it is not terrible as being made out. He is just talented enough to give us hope of some specail plays but not talented enough to seal the deal. This is more then most of the current LFer can do but people remember a younger Bonds and we get this crap.
I have not heard one peep about the close balls Winn didnot get today. or Winn not coming in to tr and cover first in the run down. But then thats all Lewis’s fault.

That said, holy moly was that a terrible broadcast. They were more pro-Dodger than Scully (though I do acknowledge that the Giants were putrid) and added nothing to my understanding or “enjoyment” of the game.
Also, while Sanchez did not do himself any favors at all, his strike zone was six inches smaller on all sides than Stolts’. It was obscene. Not that it affected the outcome.

Well I think batting leadoff or in the #2 spot is a much better use of his skill set. Fred’s got good OBP, lots of pitches per PA, good baserunning, decent but far from great power – that’s pretty much all you expect to get from the first two guys in your lineup.
But saying that you don’t like his ability to drive in runs seems weird to me, since he’s been pretty decent at it over his career. So the question is, do you think that a couple dozen AB’s from this season tell us more about his ability to drive in runs than 600 AB’s or so from the past two years?
Adoptive parent of Noah Lowry. Because he was awesome once, and, goddammit, he shall be awesome once again!
I hope.
Not that it means much
But for Jesus to be called up, a player will have to be removed from the 40 man roster. I think Sabean is reluctant to do that even if it meant removing a terrible player.
Noah Lowry is not yet on the 60 day DL.
