I get the feeling Will wants Lewis to be more like The Ripper (Jack Clark). No doubt the Giants could desperately use another Ripper. ( The Ripper was not always a good glove btw.)And Lewis is just not that kind of player.

But Lewis is still valuable and the type of play the Giatns have had trouble getting for almost 40 years – lead off.

I, and others, have explained quite a few times why we think Lewis is above average defensively. I don’t remember ever seeing you make a counter-argument. You just ignore what we say, and then announce the next day that Lewis can’t play LF.

People claim that you can’t use a player’s defensive stats over one year if the stats don’t agree with them and then go with a year’s defensive stats if they do agree with them. That’s what I hate about these new defensive stats.

I don’t think I’ve ever done that. It’s far from perfect, but you can definitely learn something about player from a year and half’s worth of UZR. Basically, just use it as evidence instead of proof.

UZR had him at 7.3 runs above average last year.

You can read about UZR here and here. It’s long and boring, though. Basically, UZR uses play by play data that includes where the ball was hit to, how hard it was hit, at what angel it was hit (as in line or high fly), etc. Based on that, and after it has adjusted for park dimensions, it determines whether or not an average fielder would have made the play (by comparing it to plays made around the league). If a player made a play that an average player wouldn’t have made, he saved a hit, and vice versa. Hits are then translated into runs based on the formula that every hit is worth .78 runs (or something like that, I think).

Incidentally, I have never said he is bad.

Not overall. I have said that he is “off” and it could well be that he is league-average as a defender. But he has made a lot of misplays this year that an above-average LF would not.

As someone who has a watched quite a few games, I’m also surprised that a serious fan like you could so easily forget just how bad the average LF is.

I agree Lewis glove work is off. But it is not terrible as being made out. He is just talented enough to give us hope of some specail plays but not talented enough to seal the deal. This is more then most of the current LFer can do but people remember a younger Bonds and we get this crap.

I have not heard one peep about the close balls Winn didnot get today. or Winn not coming in to tr and cover first in the run down. But then thats all Lewis’s fault.

That said, holy moly was that a terrible broadcast. They were more pro-Dodger than Scully (though I do acknowledge that the Giants were putrid) and added nothing to my understanding or “enjoyment” of the game.

Also, while Sanchez did not do himself any favors at all, his strike zone was six inches smaller on all sides than Stolts’. It was obscene. Not that it affected the outcome.

And, having lived for a little while on the east coast and having a ton of family in the midwest, I actually think the west coast broadcasters are more even than their counterparts in other time zones. Cardinals, Cubs, Yankees, and Red Sox are probably the most extreme. Those broadcasters are out-and-out rooting on air.

Apparently Grant agrees.

Grant probably isn’t home

Some love for Fred from Baggs

While Kemp looks like a serious Gold Glove candidate, Fred Lewis continues to go in the other direction. Lewis appeared to have a chance at catching Pierre’s double, but he got a late jump and appeared unsure of himself as he jogged after the ball

We get it. You don’t like Fred Lewis.

Fred is ok. Do not like his defense or ability to drive in runs.

Lewis was given the chance, probably because of the stats you quote, to be a #3 or #5 hitter and drive in runs. The brother failed so he is back to leadoff.

Brother failed in, what, 20 AB? 40 AB?

28 AB from the #3 spot, 7 AB from #5.

Well I think batting leadoff or in the #2 spot is a much better use of his skill set. Fred’s got good OBP, lots of pitches per PA, good baserunning, decent but far from great power – that’s pretty much all you expect to get from the first two guys in your lineup.

But saying that you don’t like his ability to drive in runs seems weird to me, since he’s been pretty decent at it over his career. So the question is, do you think that a couple dozen AB’s from this season tell us more about his ability to drive in runs than 600 AB’s or so from the past two years?

Lewis is a table-setter and not a run producer so 1-2hole are best.

Not that it means much

But for Jesus to be called up, a player will have to be removed from the 40 man roster. I think Sabean is reluctant to do that even if it meant removing a terrible player.

Noah Lowry is not yet on the 60 day DL.
