I went to a talk by Woodward and Bernstein a while ago, and they talked a bit about how anonymous sources are being abused by today’s journalists. They were quite adamant that a journalist should use an anonymous source as a jumping off point to find actual evidence of what the source alleged, rather than simply take them at their word.
Anonymous sources aren’t bad in and of themselves, but if they’re the only evidence you have, you don’t have any evidence.
