OT: New Star Trek Movie

First, there won't be any spoilers in this part of the FanPost, but no guaruntees about anything else posted below.

So, honored McCoven nerds and nerdettes, what did you think of the new Star Trek movie?  I assume you all went out and saw it last night like I did, Vulcan ears and all.  Anyways, I liked it.  In fact, I thought it was a damn good movie.  Definitely kept true to the basic spirit of Star Trek and the original series, but gave a nice modern take.  One thing I could have had just a little less of was lens flare, but that was a minor thing and not that big a distraction.  All in all, it was a lot of fun, so a two thumbs up from me.

But enough about what I thought, how about you?  Am I spot on, or should I turn in my nerd card immediately?  Sound off.

I’ve heard really good things so far! I’m going to see it once all my exams are over.

So you’re saying exams have priority over Star Trek?

I can’t wait to see it either.

But, the only thing I liked about the Semester system was how early things end in the summer. Other than that, the Quarter system rules – Finals for us aren’t until mid-June…

I’m going to see it soon, hopefully. I’m still more of a TNG fan than TOS, but I’ve been looking forward to this just the same.

I like that the fanpost is automatically (I assume) tagged “San Francisco Giants.” Since there are zero votes, maybe there should be a poll option for for people who don’t rank all the Star Trek films, but could still like the movie as a summer/action blockbuster or Lost in Space or whatever it is.

maybe it has zero votes because it just came out and nobody’s seen it yet. I’m going myself in about four hours to see it in IMAX. Shatner looks good in the previews, though. He seems to have dropped some weight.

Would you let us know how it was in IMAX?

I saw it and definitely want to catch it again, but I’m wondering if the IMAX format will be worth the extra $.

I loved it in IMAX

although I would have also loved it in whatever they call non-IMAX movies. It’s just a great movie. The crowd was cheering throughout the movie like it was a ballgame. I liked that Leonard Nimoy had an important part. I was pretty much expecting a walk on or something.

The thing about Star Trek in IMAX, as opposed to – say – The Dark Knight , is that it was never filmed for IMAX. So I’m sure it’ll be good in the format, just not as breath-taking as TDK IMAX was.

saw it last night...

Very well done and it manages to set off an entirely new storyline while staying within the Star Trek canon. Well cast, too.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that

They did a really good job casting. Characters were spot-on.

Fun fact

Paramount Pictures, the studio that has released a bunch of Star Trek media, was founded 95 years ago today.

obviously it is fake. It is Star Wars and Star Trek. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but those shows ARE fake. Sorry to burst your bubble. I know how it feels. Just like when i found out that wrestling was fake.

I saw it with my company this morning, and it was awesome. I loved the references to the original series as they actually worked within the context rather than just throwing them in there for the heck of it. I think the kid who played Chekov did a good job and was totally unexpected. Not enough Simon Pegg and John Cho, but they’ve gotta save some stuff for the sequel(s), I suppose.

by Natto on May 8, 2009 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I loved the way they stayed true to the original Star Trek, yet threw in a Spock-Uhura romance to make it different. Just a little bit of unexpectedness increases the excitement level of the movie. I mean you know Kirk and Spock aren’t going to die, but there’s a possiblity that someone else might. They also had the expected part where the heroes beam down with some cast member you don’t know and you just know that guy is going to die. You almost laugh when it actually happens. It’s like the black guy in the horror movies!!

I just learned today that apparently the guy in red always died in the old show. I never knew that, and my star trek-savvy friend nearly had a heart attack when I asked HER (yes, a WOMAN trekkie!!) what she was talking about. Trekkies are weird, weird people.

It was fun, not fantastic. I am a pretty serious Star Trek fan. Visually beautiful. Little Spock being bullied was entertaining. Could have done a lot better with the Kobayashi maru simulation. Even a casual fan could recognize the charcters before they were introduced. Seeing NCC 1701 on the screen again made me grin like and idiot. Dr. McCoy character, not good at all.

You think your a fan? You got nothing on my adopted daughter Sue Burns, now she's a fan. 4 out of 5 doctors agree Rosterbation can cause blindness and delusions of grandeur.

I actually loved Karl Urban’s performance – except for one scene (the green-blooded hobgoblin line). There’s actually some talk of him being in consideration for a Best Supporting nom. I only wish he’d gotten more screen-time.

Very good

but I know nothing about Star Trek, so I missed a LOT of the references. I still thought it was wayyy better than I was expecting it to be. It was very JJ Abramsy, especially the mellowdramatic, slo-mo style beginning with the crazy over-the-top music, but a very good movie for sure.
