Carlos Lee, worth pursuing?

As if we couldn't assume, the Astros will likely be one of the sellers this summer. Richard Justice blogs that the Astros will be selling on Carlos Lee and others, and even willing to pick up some of the salaries. I don't see anyone they have worth pursuing for the Giants other than Lee and Oswalt, but Lee obviously fills a greater need.

Here's some of the Pros and Cons of Lee:

Pro: Middle of the order hitter. Projects for a high .800 OPS. Averaged 20.9 replacement runs from '06-08. Averaged a dollar value of $12.66 M over '06-09. Right handed hitter, whom the Giants already had interest in.

Con:  Butcher in left field. 32 years old (33 in June), and has recent injury issues. Remaining salary of $18.5 M through 2012 (74 M over 4 years). Would likely move Freddie to the bench.

So is Carlos Lee worth pursuing? If so what would it take to get him?

The Giants already tried once. They offered him more money than Houston and he went with Houston. I’d rather not have this turn into another false white whale signing a la Steve Finley, where the management had a boner for him for years and signed him only after Finley had no other place to go.

How much money would the Astros have to pick up for Lee to be worth it?

by Fresburg on May 8, 2009 8:54 AM PDT up reply actions

Almost all of it. He’s not a big improvement over Lewis and/or Schierholtz right now. Who knows what he’ll be worth in 3 years.

You can't be serious

Fred Lewis—Shitty fielder, hitting like .300, drives in a run once every month or so, strikes out ton, and stole a base.

Carlos Lee—Shittly fielder, hitting like .300, drives in 1000 runs a decade, hits bombs, doesn’t strike out a whole lot, and has one less steal than fred lewis

To call him not an improvement over fred lewis is insane. Is he expensive? Yes. But that is why Houston should pay us alot to take him

by m34josh on May 8, 2009 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

In what way is he wrong? Them’s the facts. Now, he may decline as he gets older, but right now Lee is MUCH better than Fred Lewis.

Cookyman already said it, Lee is better, but not by much. And when you consider his player-type and contract, he’s really undesirable. And, the fact that the poster above is calling Fred Lewis a ‘shitty fielder’ makes me question his judgment!

by xanthan on May 12, 2009 9:46 AM PDT up reply actions

You can’t be serious. Even the broadcasters mention his problems holding onto the ball every few games. Do you question theirs too?

And my posts above were made before FredK left five guys on base Sunday by looking at called third strikes, and had four more LOB in the first three innings last night.

Too say that we don’t need a bat like Lee at the right price is kind of comical. Its what all of us complain that the Giants need…A big bat (insert weight joke about Lee, Molina, and Sandoval here!)

You can’t be serious. Even the broadcasters mention his problems holding onto the ball every few games. Do you question theirs too?

I’m very serious on the Internet. If the broadcasters think that Fred is a below-average LF, then they are wrong, too. Just like you!

Long live Fred Lewis! The guy you guys keep dreaming is a good fielder

by m34josh on May 23, 2009 1:27 AM PDT up reply actions

To call him not an improvement over fred lewis is insane.

Hmm. So I guess it’s a good thing I never did that.

Carlos lee is a very good hitter. Fred Lewis is an averagish hitter. Carlos Lee is a terrible fielder. Fred Lewis is an above average fielder. Carlos Lee is a decent base runner. Fred Lewis is better. Overall, Lee is better, but the differnce isn’t big enough for him to be worth his contract now, let alone in three years. And this is before even discussing the prospects we’d lose in that trade.

Adoptive parent of Noah Lowry. Because he was awesome once, and, goddammit, he shall be awesome once again!

by Cookyman on May 8, 2009 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Above average fielders don’t drop routine fly balls. Or lets go back to last year when he tried to play tip-drill with Rowand out there. The guy is and always has taken horrible routes to balls and been a hack out there. Right now every ball has us all nervous whether he will actually catch it or not. That doesn’t happen with “above average” fielders

Not saying we should give up anything useful, but if the Astros are sellers like the title says, why not play The Price is Right? If they will suck down 30-50% of that salary I am all for it. We aren’t going to win 1-0, 2-1, 3-1 games forever and somebody has to hit cleanup, so it may as well not be an aging catcher

I see your point with Cain, but all we bought out were his arbitration years. Hopefully finally putting up some Ws will make him want to stay longer, but after the frustrating last couple years, would you really fault him for going to a contender?

In this game you want to be able to trade your outs for runs at a better rate than the team in the other dug out does. And that is the baseball.

Oh, definitely. I’m just saying that the ability to get to as any balls as possible is the most important part of being a fielder in the major leagues. Different positions require different skill sets, but range always remains the most important skill.

oh I thought this was a serious inquiry. For the Giants to seriously be racist against Latinos would be a staggering event, considering the ambassador/talent evaluation role Felipe Alou has taken in DR. They’ve always been a team that has welcomed and embraced Latino ballplayers. I remember the Krueger incident and I thought his fatal flaw was bringing any kind of ethnic epithet into it. Once he mentioned “Carribean” I knew he was done for.

I need to go back to bed or something. I’m in a mood and looking for fights even on the blog I love. On the blog that loves me. :(

So you didn’t question his potential yesterday when he took two strikeouts looking, one with guys on 2nd & 3rd, one with the bases loaded?

If he keeps this up, he has a chance to be the first leadoff man to strike out 200 times in a season. Future Ryan Howard, -50 homers

by m34josh on May 11, 2009 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

You do realize a fast runner on base significantly betters the chances following batter(s) even if the runner is not doing something risky? Like about 14 wObp better.

Then figure that chance to add to pitchers pitch count and get middle relivers into a game and it becomes real useful to have fast runner that gets on 2 out of 5 times a game. Maybe even more improtant then your vaunted 50 HRs. 50 homers will mean a homer once every 3 games or so for you 200 K. Or you can improve the whole inning up as a 6 time in 3 games.

I miss the Mays & McCovey, Williams & Clark, days myself but every time those dous were realy dangerious you had table setters. Lewis is a table setter.

I’m pretty sure you’ve got some insightful things to write, but I can’t really tell with all arbitrary CAPS and run-on sentences. You can’t just put a period in because you feel like it; there’s a method to ending a sentence. Also, “then” doesn’t = “than”.
