Glenn Dickey Gets It
When will the rest of the Bay Area Media wake up and see the truth so clearly right in front of their thus far blind eyes?

Great article by Dickey. How is he usually? I haven’t read any of his stuff (that I can remember, I’m sure I’ve read some but don’t currently realize it was him) so I have no clue if this is par for the course or some anomaly.

Proud father of Juan Carlos Perez. Think Albert Pujols at second.

He is very good with football. He is past a Grand Master in disturbing crap when he choses to use it. I tip my hat to him for this post though.

by far the best thing written on this whole story that I've read
- couple favorite quotes -
… Meanwhile, the Ramirez and Rodriguez cases bring an interesting dilemma to writers who have declared they won’t vote for Bonds because he "cheated" by using performance-enhancing drugs. Are Ramirez and Rodriguez now in that class? And what of the other names which will eventually surface? Rest assured, there will be more. Anybody who’s been around baseball in recent years knows that steroid use has been widespread. And to anybody who believes baseball’s new drug policy has stopped it, I’d ask: What’s your position on the Tooth Fairy?
… In fact, steroids are not a magic bullet. Several marginal players have been caught. One of them was Marvin Benard, a Giants outfielder who was mediocre until he took steroids and became … well, mediocre.
… So now, Ramirez has been caught with the usual excuse — he didn’t know what he was taking. Frankly, I don’t care. I’ll vote for Ramirez and Rodriguez when they’re eligible for the Hall of Fame, and I’ll vote for Bonds, too. They’re all deserving and, unlike Selig and many of my colleagues, I’m not a hypocrite.

He wrote for the Chron for decades, as far back as the 60’s. I don’t think it has been more than 5 years since he left the Chron. For this grumpy old man (at least by Mccoven standards) I am at a complete lose how to explain him. He has done some really dickish stuff and some really good stuff. I would imagine there is wiki page, or something, somewhere that sum it up better than I can.

One thing about Glenn Dickey is, he would reply to e-mails, call people back that left messages on his voice mail. Not many do that. I believe Scott Ostler does as well. Bruce Jenkins doesn’t (don’t know about Bruce Jenkin’s Boner).

I’ve had replies to my emails from Jenkins and from Henry Schulman. Both thoughtful and gracious.

I don’t think I’ve ever sent anything to a sports writter but it’s pretty cool that they’re reading and responding.
I’ve thought about sending an email to Chris Haft saying something along the lines of “Stay strong, brother.”

I think I’ve only sent a total of about 5 or 6 emails to sportswriters. Not sure what even prompted me to do so, but I’ve always gotten replies and they’ve always been congenial. I think I probably exchanged a half dozen emails back and forth with “The Betting Fool” for a few months when I found out we went to the same high school and that he graduated a year after me.

Nice branch here. I rarely write to reporters and less so with that advent of email. I figure they are usually swamped so why add to the misery. When I do write I usually only drop a few lines to note my enjoyment and thanks. I do it this way mainly because people are most people are more likely to send something if they hate a piece and say nothing if they enjoy it and that creates a feedback cycle that encourages more crap, in my opinion.
Any ways over the years Dickey has been nice enough to respond. Off the top of my head so as has Shulman, V.K., and Flechter. I think I have screwed up and not said how much I enjoy Bagg’s (something I should remedy) and I am pretty sure I am missing a couple names. The point is these are all notes that take little to read and by their nature the sender really expects not a single response yet these writers have taken the time to do so. Good on them.
